1 Surfside United Methodist Church April 2014 APRIL USHERS 8:30 AM Charles Harrar (C) Judy Harrar David Reid Debbie Quinn 11:00 AM STEVE MELETES (C) Dear Surfside Church family: In an effort to promote healthy living, we will kick off 40 Days to a Healthier Life beginning Sunday, April 27, This innovative approach to achieving a healthy lifestyle is rooted in a relationship with God. This plan will teach you simple ways to incorporate healthy choices into your lifestyle. This campaign is based on five essentials that will help you succeed: Faith Food Fitness Focus and Friends. The Daniel Plan is effective because it is founded in faith, and God is the source of all inspiration and power. The program incorporates guidance in every life area, so you can not only get healthy physically, but spiritually, emotionally and relationally as well. Beyond access to practical food and fitness tips and resources, you will learn how to focus your mind on those things that will encourage healthy choices. This is an ancient biblical principle taught by Paul in Philippians: Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable if anything is excellent or praiseworthy think about such things. Philippians 4:8 (NIV) We will be borrowing heavily from a comprehensive program developed by Pastor Rick Warren of Saddleback Church and a team of medical professionals and health experts. During our worship services (Sundays and Wednesdays) you will hear messages focusing on the key areas of The Daniel Plan program, including looking at what God says about our bodies, the importance of setting goals in faith, what it takes to really change, the group factor, and concludes with becoming who God meant you to be. Week 1: Introduction to the Daniel Plan: God s Prescription for Health Week 2: Principles for Lasting Change Week 3: Goal Setting: What kind of goals does God Bless? Week 4: The Group Factor: We re Better Together Week 5: The God Factor: God s Power In Your Life Week 6: Becoming Who God Meant You To Be: Winning With the Hand You re Dealt To encourage you further and to help you implement the elements of The Daniel Plan into your life, a six-week study using video and discussion will be offered. During Sunday School beginning April 27, the Discipleship Class will host this study. Additional offerings of the class are scheduled in Rooms 8 and 10 on Tuesdays from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. beginning April 29; and Wednesdays from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. beginning April 30. The six sessions are: Faith: Nurturing Your Soul Food: Enjoying God s Abundance Fitness: Strengthening Your Body Focus: Renewing Your Mind Friends: Encouraging Each Other Living the Lifestyle A study guide is available for you at a church subsidized rate of only $5. Signup in the narthex to reserve your copy. You can also order the hardback copy of the book for $14. The Daniel Plan Cookbook is available for $18. 2 PAGE 2 Easter Greetings to all! With Easter coming late in the month of April, it will probably mean we can leave our coats at home this year. Hoping so! We should plan to take a coat or blanket to the Sunrise Service oceanfront, however. It is exciting to see such good attendance at our circle meetings each month. We could use more of you to attend our General Meetings, however. When all five circles come together, we have empty seats in our circle, as attendance is low. Please support the Mother-Daughter Banquet on May 9. We re having a PICNIC, according to Gini Abee, Care Circle leader. Announcements with details and publicity will be up around church very soon. Please remember to turn in your Prayer and Self Denial Offering to Treasurer, Diane Stiles, before April 15. Remember, also, the two UMW events being held in Marion District on April 5 in Mullins and on May 17 at F.U.M.C. in Myrtle Beach. The Conference Come Together Be Together event won t be this close for another eleven years, since each district is only asked to host it once, and there are twelve districts in South Carolina. Did you register yet? Thank you to those members who agreed to write to a name selected from the 2014 Prayer Calendar. Report back to Mary Hope Funkhouser when you receive a reply. Your letter to a Missionary or Deaconess in a foreign country takes time to arrive. When I got an response from Kathmandu, Nepal, in December, I had all but forgotten that I sent Deirdre Zimmerman a birthday greeting in July. Be patient. Several members of Marion District are attending the UMW National Assembly in Louisville, KY this month. It is my desire to invite a district officer to a General Meeting in the fall to give us a first-hand, eyewitness report on this important meeting. Billy Graham writes, A refuge is a place safely out of harm s way. A fortress is a fortified building that is virtually impenetrable by conventional means. Martin Luther wrote a wonderful hymn that says, A mighty fortress is our God; a bulwark never failing. What a statement about the magnificent power and protection of God! Does God care for you and me? Can we turn to Him in trust and faith when troubles and temptations threaten to overwhelm us? Yes a thousand times yes! What greater proof do we need than that He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to die in our place? Happy Easter! Judy Lienemann, President JOY CIRCLE JOY Circle will meet Tuesday, April 8th at 12:00 in the Fellowship Hall. Harriet Dry and Sybil Hucks will be the hostesses. Gloria Frazier will lead the devotions. Dee Fields will lead the study in Psalms 87, 88 and 89, please read these. All ladies are welcome to join us. We enjoyed learning how to repent by doing the hokey pokey. MARY BAKER CIRCLE Mary Baker Circle will meet on Wednesday, April 9th at 10:30 in the Fellowship Hall. Linda Pagani will have our program. Sandy White and Marge Ricker will be hostesses providing dessert and drink. All ladies of the church are invited. Call Elaine Paige for more info CARE CIRCLE All ladies of the church are invited to our Annual UMW Mother-Daughter-Sister Banquet on Friday, May 9th, 2014 at 6:00 PM in the Fellowship Hall. CARE Circle will be your hostesses for the covered dish event. Ladies of all ages and stages are invited. Bring your Mother, your Daughter, or a special LYLAS (Love You Like a Sister) friend. A sign up sheet will be available soon near the kitchen door to reserve your seat at the Picnic! Friendly Senior News The program for Friendly Seniors in April will be centered on proper exercise for seniors, presented by Pat Messinger, our own in-house exercise leader. We will be enjoying good food and fellowship, as well. Come be with us in the Fellowship Hall on April 15 at 12:00. Bring a dish and perhaps a book to trade. A short committee meeting will follow the lunch to plan for future programs. Thanks to Deanna Jenkins for contacting the Rock N Ettes, who provided an entertaining program for us in March. We will miss our Snowbirds, who leave us soon, and hope to see them again as they return. The Easter Bunny is leaving his homemade candy to sell on Sunday, April 13th before, in between, and after both services in the Fellowship Hall. Come get your Easter Candy.

3 PAGE 3 PALM SUNDAY CANTATA SUMC Spirit Singers and chamber orchestra will present the cantata Come, Touch the Robe, by Pepper Choplin, during both worship services on Palm Sunday, April 13. From year to year, we tell the stories of Jesus in a variety of ways. But until we truly encounter The Lord of healing, of glory and authority, of humility, and of victory, we remain unmoved and unchanged. It is that Christ - Christ as He showed Himself to be - who we encounter in Come, Touch the Robe. Unique in concept and soaring in spirit, this work uses the simple garment Jesus wore as a thematic device to recount the interaction of several people who were with Jesus during His last days on earth. Each encounter brings to light a different aspect of His identity. To a suffering woman, His robe conveyed divine healing. On the mountaintop, the robe shone and filled the disciples' eyes with His glory and authority. When Jesus laid His garment aside in the upper room, it displayed His humility as a servant as He washed the feet of each disciple. At the tomb, the grave clothes He left behind help us experience His resurrection and the victory over death. It is through these personal, touching moments that our hearts are fully prepared to meet Jesus in an intimate way - a meeting that moves and changes, and allows us to experience the healing, the glory, and the power of Christ, and rejoice in the stirring celebration of the resurrection of the Lamb of God. Come, prepare your heart to meet Jesus in an intimate way; Come, experience the healing, the glory, and the power of Christ; Come, touch the robe of our Lord... Continuing on Thursday April 3rd Mt. So, clean out those closets in April, because our annual rummage sale is scheduled this year for Friday and Saturday, May 2 & 3. As usual, we will begin accepting your donations of gently used and new items at the Family Life Center, beginning Monday, April 28 until Friday morning, May 2, when the sale actually begins. The success of our annual sale depends entirely on the generosity of the members of Surfside United Methodist Church. Please talk about the sale with your friends and neighbors, encouraging them to both donate and attend this annual event. Last year s rummage sale was a huge success, but we d like to surpass it and set a new record in Also, the ladies who regularly work this sale are hard working, but can use some help. We would like to enlist some new workers (male or female) with strong backs, willing hands and joyous hearts. Even if you can t work the entire week, we would love to have whatever time you can spare us. The work is rewarding, and the fellowship is superb. Andrew Drew John Lattin Scholarship The Surfside United Methodist Men are currently accepting applications for the Andrew Drew John Lattin Scholarship. The scholarship may be awarded to deserving graduating high school seniors or college students who are currently attending Surfside United Methodist Church in Surfside Beach, SC. The scholarship may provide an award annually in the amount of $500 each to a male and female full-time student attending a four -year college/university or attending a community college. All applications need to be submitted no later than May 15, 2014, to the Scholarship Committee of Surfside United Methodist Church. The applications are available at the Surfside United Methodist Church office or on the church website (surfsideumc.org). Surfside UMM President, Kenny Bingham, attended the SC United Methodist Men's Spiritual Weekend Feb. 29 thru March 2. This year s theme was "Plunge - into the deep: Deeper Prayer, Passion, Purpose and Power. Luke 5:1-11. The speakers were very informative. A diverse group from mega churches to new start-up churches. Each had a reason for their success, Put God first and Purposeful Prayer, God works wonders. The Worship services were all different but very much the same. God is in charge if only we let him lead. Bishop Jonathan Holston preached on Saturday night. He delivered a very good sermon. Everyone enjoyed his service. The UMM Pancake/Sausage breakfast is March 30th. Everyone please bring your appetite. It will be between the two services in the Fellowship Hall. The Spaghetti dinner to help support the Scouting programs was a success thanks to our Church Family and the Scouting programs. Their help was invaluable. The Surfside UMM would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for your support in purchasing tickets, serving food, cleaning-up, praying for us and any other way our Church Family helps us in our efforts as Men serving God. 6 CHILDREN S MINISTRIES NEWS Dear Church Family, Please mark your calendar for Saturday, April 12 th from 11:00-1:00 for our Annual Easter Egg Hunt. This will be a Community and Church Family Event. We will have an Easter Egg Hunt, fun and games, and we are inviting everyone to bring a packed picnic to enjoy lunch together (don t forget a blanket). Please come and join us for a time of fun, fellowship, and to celebrate the season of Easter! We will have a box of empty Easter eggs (in the Narthex) that you can take home, fill with Easter treats and return for the children s Easter Egg Hunt. Please return the eggs back to the Narthex by Wednesday, April 9 th. Thank you in advance!! We are in the process of preparing for this year s Vacation Bible School. The VBS theme for 2014 is Cokesbury s Workshop of Wonders, Imagine & Build with God! Please mark your calendars, the dates for VBS will be June 16 th June 20 th (Monday-Friday) time TBA. Last year we had so many volunteers that generously gave of their time and it took each one of you to make VBS a success!!! I pray that all of your hearts will be moved again this year to be a part of such an amazing opportunity to share Jesus with these precious children! As you think of VBS, please pray for our opportunity to reach out to those children that are unchurched, that God would help us to stay focused on His plan & purpose, and that He would give us wisdom and discernment in preparing to serve and minister to all of these children. It is hard to believe that our school year is quickly coming to an end. We are all ready for spring and to have winter behind us! This month our parent volunteers are preparing for our annual Easter Egg Hunt and a visit from the Easter Bunny. Spring break will be the week of April 14. Upon returning from break, we will have our butterfly and ladybug larva to observe the metamorphosis. We are continuing to register for summer camp and fall preschool classes. Some exciting things are planned and we are in the middle of raising funds for the project. Any monetary donation is accepted. Forms are available at the display. Donation Goals: 200 bricks (4x8) at $ each 50 12x12 pavers at $ each 3 planters at $ each 2 teak benches at $ each The bricks and pavers will be engraved with your statement. The planters and benches will have plaques commemorating the donor s choice. The infrastructure will include new irrigation, plantings and ground (soil) improvements. We hope to have landscape lighting plus a sound system from the sanctuary. The completed project will have a shade structure for gatherings and a single fountain. 7 PAGE 7 You are invited to join any of our separate exercise classes offered at Surfside UMC. On Mondays and Wednesdays, an Adult Fitness Class is offered in the FLC from 9:45-10:45 a.m. These classes consist of walking, stretching and strength conditioning exercises at a low impact rate. Weights and various other exercise equipment are provided. Men and women are invited to participate. These classes are taught by Pat Messinger, an Active Older Fitness Instructor with 10+ years experience. A contribution (in any amount) will be greatly appreciated with 10% tithe to the Church. Please call Pat Messinger at for more information. The Hatha Yoga Class will go on there summer schedule as of We will have one class from 9:30 to 10:30 only in room 8/10. We say goodbye to our snowbirds and hope to see you all next year. All you need to bring is water, a mat or beach towel and a desire to do yoga. Hatha Yoga is a mix with breathing exercises, stretching, standing poses and balance and laying on your mat for floor exercise and deep relaxation. If you are interested in learning to combine body, mind and spirit for a healthier you please join us. If you are interested please call Mary Jo Doggett at Every Friday at 9:45 a.m. in Room 8/10, Yoga Exercise with Pat. The class consists of Yoga poses geared for the Older Adult ( sitting and standing only.) The Yoga breathing and poses will increase your balance, stretch your muscles in a gentle manner, you will feel more relaxed, enable you to sleep better and to cope with stress better. This class is taught by Pat Messinger, An Active Older Adult Fitness Instructor with over 10+ years experience. Bert calls our dining room table his prayer table, as each one of your cards are on it, representing your prayers for him. Bert is to start his chemo treatments this week, we pray that this will go well for him. God bless you all, Love, Bert and Shirley Our family would like to thank you for all the many prayers and thoughts you sent to our Lord and Savior on behalf of our son, brother, and grandson, Otto David Wayne Brown (5 years old and fighting Ewing Sarcoma bone Cancer in his right hip). Our and your prayers have been heard and answered by our merciful God! Otto has been released from the Children s Hospital of Philadelphia after a year of fighting for his life. He has been declared cancer-free by the Oncologists at the hospital! Our God is an awesome God, indeed! We collected 39 units for the American Red Cross On February 6. This was needed especially during this winter storm season. 8 PAGE 8 SUMC YOUTH NEWS Dear SUMC Family, Let me share what we ve been up to last month and a few things to look forward to. Last Month March was fun for us at SUMY. We had a group of 6 missionaries from YWAM (Youth W/ A Mission) come and lead us in worship. They took turns telling our youth some stories of their recent trip to Central America, including the chance to minister to a man named Manuel Noriega (I was dumbfounded, but our youth had no idea who they were talking about!). We also had our first InstaScavenger Hunt. Teams drove around town taking challenge photos and posting them to Instagram. The winning prize was a lunch & paddle boarding day! Our teaching focus in the mornings was friendships and peer pressure. At nights, we looked at how important it is for Christians to know the fundamentals of the Bible in a series called Bonehead Christians. Lastly, we went to see the SON OF GOD movie. It s hard not to enjoy the greatest story ever told. Coming Up Looking forward to upcoming events, please mark your calendars for Friday, May 13th. Our youth will hold a barbecue fundraiser in the FLC for Salkehatchie. Additionally, if you choose to eat in, we will have presentations from our kids about their Salkehatchie experiences. Please consider buying tickets to support our efforts this year. Still on Salkehatchie, you will soon see our Quarters for Salkehatchie table in the Narthex. Take a prescription bottle home and fill it with your quarters to support Salkehatchie. We have a few outings and fun events coming up as well. Our youth group meets twice on Sundays: - Sunday Mornings at 9:45am - Sunday Nights from 5-7pm. Gym is open for games/sports at 4pm. 9 YOUNG ADULT & FAMILY MINISTRIES NEWS Dear SUMC Family, PAGE 9 Let me share with you some of the growing ministries going on and some opportunities for you to be involved. For more information, contact Paulo Lopes ( ) or jlopes@surfsideumc.org Alpha Course We are on the last couple of weeks of our Spring Alpha course. As we wrap it up, we will have had over 80 people that have gone through the course since we started Spring of last year. This is just our third time doing it and we have already seen so much fruit. The Alpha Day Away was once again a time of renewal and discovery, and our participants had a chance to deepen relationships with each other. This was a special course because we got to see friends who were guests a year ago become leaders, ministering to new guests. And that s what it s all about! For information on Alpha, contact Diane Gaskins at gaskinsdb10@gmail.com E-Groups We have recently launched three small groups called E-Groups. These are gender-specific groups open for anyone to participate. The main purpose of an E-Group is to be an open, welcoming place where you can come, but also invite friends to come along who are not involved in church. Every meeting includes worship, prayer, a devotion, and great conversation. All three of our current groups meet in homes right now. If you re looking for a place to get connected with a smaller group of people, or if you have friends you ve wanted to share your faith with, but don t know how, consider visiting an E-Group. Here are our meeting times and places: Men: Paulo Lopes house, Thurs. 8:30-10pm ( ) Women: Leigh Gamble s house, Thurs. 6-7:30pm ( ) Women: Amy Pyles house, Thurs. 6-7:30pm ( ) Basic Training As we look forward to expanding young adult and family ministries, we need to train disciple making leaders. We started a class called Basic Training in February. This is a 6 month course on the basics of Christian doctrine, character and leadership for those wanting to lead E-groups in the future. Our current class has 20 students. We re looking forward to seeing God use this group in wonderful ways to reach others for Christ, while growing God s Kingdom and our church.
