Beginning with Ash Wednesday on March 6, we enter 40 days in which we are encouraged to be selfreflective, and to invite the Holy Spirit to search our hearts in order to reveal anything that is not right, or not based on love. (Psalm 139, 23-24) Pastor Leslie Daniels Lent is an opportunity to do spring cleaning in our souls. Sometimes we get into habits that are not helpful and we forget that they are not good. We tend to want to ignore our sins, and say they are "not that bad." The season of Lent has a focus on the cross of Jesus and reminds us why He had to die. I find it hard to face the fact that an innocent man had to die because of sins I simply gloss over in my own life. For the sake of drawing near to God, I pray that we will all be willing to let God search our hearts during the next 40 days. We don't want to be children whose words, thoughts and actions don't reflect well on our family or our Father. Rather, we want the world to experience His love through us. Jesus said: You are to be perfect even as your father in heaven is perfect.*" According to John Wesley, the meaning of perfect is to be completely loving. Completely. Not even allowing what we consider "small sins," like "white lies," or a little bit of gossip. Henri Nouwen wrote: Life is a continuing process of death of the old and the familiar, and being reborn again into a new hope, a new trust, and a new love. Perhaps we will discover a new love for God, and for one another. I hope you will join us for the Ash Wednesday Worship Service, March 6 th, at 6:00 pm. 3 March, 2019 Page 3 LIBRARY MINISTRY: 2018 IN REVIEW Shown above are the five albums including two new albums - which show many of the events and activities in which DUMC took part during the year These books are currently located in the church parlor (across from the sanctuary) and are there for all to enjoy. I know many have enjoyed looking at these books during leisure time. I appreciate that everyone has taken good care of them; my plan is to continue these or similar books in 2019 and going forward. Bert Esslinger 5th Sunday Celebration Back to the Future As we are blessed to have many generations in this church family, on this 5th Sunday, we will celebrate in a manner that the Young people of our church enjoy. The theme will be Remembering people who have impacted our life stories in positive ways. Your are asked to bring in a photo of someone who has impacted your faith life in a special way. These photos will be displayed, with a brief explanation, in the Gym where others may read them and also be inspired. We will then have a combined and blended worship time together in the Gym beginning at 10:00. There will be special music, testimony and stories. Prior to 10:00, we will gather at 9:30 in the sanctuary for a brief devotion. This will be followed by the time of fellowship in the Gym so that the people can become more acquainted and have an opportunity to enjoy the photos in the Gym.

4 Page 4 DUNLAP UNITED METHODIST CHURCH WE NEED YOUR STORY! STORYLINE is a new class that will begin on Wednesday evening, March 20, and continue for approximately six weeks. In this class we will reflect on the story of our lives and how thinking about our lives as story can have an impact on how we think and act. We hope that there will be stories that emerge from this study that we can share with the entire congregation in different formats. The class will be led by Pam Kiper STORYLINE Wednesday Night Live 5:30 Wednesday nights. United Methodist Men Soup & Chili Luncheon Sunday, March 24th after 10:30 service. We guys would love for some ladies to bring us their scrumptious desserts!

6 DUNLAP UNITED METHODIST CHURCH Page 6 SPECIAL RECOGNITION: CINDY WIDICK, YOUTH LEADER Cindy Widick was born in Springfield, TN and grew up in Madison. She played recreational softball from elementary school until her early twenties, basketball in junior high, and was in the Rifle Corp/Marching Band in Madison High School. She began weight-lifting in 1981 and was in competitive bodybuilding and power-lifting until Until 1994, Cindy worked in administrative positions at Miller Medical Group and General Hospital, wheile taking night classes at Cumberland Institute of Wellness. She graduated as a Licensed Massage Therapist in 1995, then began building her massage practice while working part-time for the Nashville Public Defender s office. In 1996, she opened her first massage practice facility in Hendersonville, TN. Hank and Cindy married September 12, 1998 at the Coke Ovens! They lived in Bledsoe County. Seth was born in August of 1999 and Noah in July of While expecting Seth, Cindy obtained her aerobic instructor certificate and began working at Mt. Airy Athletic Club as Assistant Manager, Massage Therapist, and Aerobic Instructor. From 2003 to 2005, Cindy taught PE classes at the Chattanooga State Bledsoe/Sequatchie Campus. In the summer of 2005, Cindy and Hank moved to Sequatchie County where Cindy was a PTO volunteer at Griffith Elementary. She then did a stint at GES, and then opened A Simple Touch Message Therapy in June Silver and Loy George Hayes invited Cindy to Dunlap UMC in She became our VBS director when Amy Probst was pastor and continued as director for 5 years. She works every year with the Lions Club Christmas for Kinds and has volunteered over the past 10 years for various community events, including the Fair, 4-H, the Food Bank, Valley Fest and numerous church events. She and Hank have been involved with BSA Scouting programs for 10 years and she is still a den leader in Cub Scouts, on various Cub Scout committee assignments, Boy Scout Committee, Merit Badge Counselor, Venturing Crew Leader, and committee member. Cindy Widick is currently the leader of The High Road - our Dunlap UMC Youth Group. She loves working with young people and children...it keeps her young! They will host a fund raiser at our Fat Tuesday Dinner, and have plans for an outreach/ministry to shut-ins in the community. They have early stage plans for a Senior prom (as in Senior Citizens). They are planning to attend the Winter Jam (Christian Rock Concert) at UTC Arena on Sunday, March 10th. Please contact Cindy if you would like to join them chaperones are always welcome! A recap of Resurrection 2019 will be presented by the youth at the Fifth Sunday Singing, March 31st. When I had children of my own, Cindy writes, I became more aware of my faith and began questioning myself and my beliefs, and my relationship with God. During my father s battle with cancer and as his life came to an end, we shared his thoughts and beliefs in his faith, and my desire for a stronger connection to God grew. Pastor Amy helped me find myself and deliver myself to God. Working and sharing with youth strengthens my faith as I see God and the world through young minds.

Come and share your best dish (Irish or something green) with your church family. Be sure to wear Green or you might be pinched. Fellowship Dinner A wonderful meal is being planned, so mark your calendar Tuesday March 5 th 5:30pm. We will be celebrating Fat Tuesday (the last day before Lent starts). The colors of the day are Purple (symbolizes justice), Green (represents faith) and Gold (signifies power). There will be colored beads, music and good food. Hope to see you there.
