1 TRINITY TOWER February 2018 Volume 26, Issue 2 Cross Points Wednesday Night Lenten Worship Series The season of Lent begins on February 14, Valentine s Day, the day when all thoughts are on the gift of Love. It is actually a good day for this holy season to begin, because Jesus death on the cross stands as one of the deepest and most powerful images of love in human history. Lent is a season of 40 days, not counting Sundays, which begins on Ash Wednesday and ends Holy Saturday. Lent comes from the Anglo Saxon word, lencten, which literally means, lengthening (of days). It later took on the meaning of "spring." The 40 days represent the time Jesus spent in the wilderness, enduring the temptation of Satan and preparing to begin his ministry. For us, Lent is a time of repentance, fasting and preparation for the coming of Easter. It is a time of self-examination and reflection. In the early church, Lent was a time to prepare new converts for baptism. Today, we focus on our relationship with God during the season, often choosing to give up something or to volunteer and give of ourselves for others. Instead of giving something up, it can also be about adding a discipline in your life in order to strengthen your relationship with God. This Lent, consider adding to your life a Wednesday night worship centered on the theme, Cross Points. Jesus lived with the awareness that God is doing something, right here, right now, and anybody can be a part of it. He encouraged his listeners to search, to question, to wrestle with implications of what he was saying and doing. Every Wednesday night from 6:30-7:15, you are invited to worship at Trinity and view a series of short videos that explore our world from a perspective of Jesus. Each video will challenge you to search, question, and grow in faith, in themes ranging from anger to compassion to guilt. Begin the evening with a delicious Lenten dinner and cross crafts for kids 5:00-6:15 p.m., and finish the night with some hearty spiritual food. You will leave feeling nourished and strengthened for the days ahead. 6 Feed My Starving Children MobilePack is April Through two very generous matched gifts of up to $40,000; a gift of $20,000; and $6,000 already donated online toward our event, this year s planning team feels our goal of $99,000 (450,000 meals) is very doable! By March 1, we need to raise the majority of our funds so that we can commit to FMSC that we will pack 450,000 meals. Donations can be made from now through March 1 to help us reach our goal. Our Lenten offering will be designated to our MobilePack event, and all donations received from Ash Wednesday dinner will go to the event as well. (Costs for the meal are covered by a Thrivent Action team.) Please consider a gift today to share your love with children being nourished by these meals. Now through March 1 Donate online at or drop a check off at church. (Please make checks payable to Trinity Lutheran with FMSC in the memo line.) Also, please check to see if your employer will offer a matching gift for your donation. Donations will be listed in the April 15 bulletin, so consider a donation in honor or in memory of a loved one! A gift of $33 feeds 5 children for a month. A gift of $80 feeds one child for a year. A gift of $220 provides 1,000 meals for children. A gift of $400 feeds a family of five for one year. More than 90% of every contributed dollar goes toward feeding kids in need. Beginning March 2 Shift sign up will open to the church and community. We have 1,500 volunteer spots to fill. Everyone over the age of 5 is encouraged to help. There will be something for everyone, and training will be provided at each shift. We anticipate having nine packing shifts (two on Friday, five on Saturday and two on Sunday). Each shift is two hours long. Children under 5 are too young to participate in the actual packing, but we will offer childcare at Trinity on the Saturday morning shift. Thank you from Trinity s FMSC Planning Team Angie Boner, Beth & Mike Arends, Cari & Earl Hanson, Connie Francis, Emma Dalton, Denise Aasen, Elsa Soderstrom, Linda, Troy, Emma & Matt Koltes, Frank Larson, George Goldade, Jeri Lowe, Jill Kunze, Julia Rosendahl, Melissa Albers, Edwards Family, Rebecca Furnival, Ellie Schaible, Tori Everson, Konnie & Kristin Berg, and Jill Cornell Endings and Beginnings On Sunday, January 14, we said Farewell and Godspeed to Pastor Carrie. It was a day filled with gratitude and grace, as we thanked her for her ten years of faithful service at Trinity. Continue to hold Pastor Carrie close to your hearts in prayer as she opens up a new chapter in her life. With endings come new beginnings. Pastor Brian has already been in contact with the Minneapolis Area Synod about possible interim pastors. An interim pastor will be called to serve with Pastor Brian until we as a congregation have called a permanent Associate Pastor. During the interim period, a Call Committee will be formed by the Council and will begin interviewing candidates for the permanent position. When a pastor is called to Trinity, the work of the interim pastor will conclude here. It is hoped that the interim period will take no longer than six months. Rest assured, you will be apprised of the process as it moves forward. Please pray for Trinity as it enters this exciting process! Also, please don t hesitate to contact Pastor Brian if you have questions. 7
