2 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfector of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Hebrews 12:1-2 In January, we introduced Hebrews 12:1-2 to be our verse for the year. When reading this verse, one may consider the theme of running the race, which would be appropriate. However, running the race is just part of this verse. We can run many different directions. We can run very fast. But unless we run with our eyes on the goal, that is fixed on Jesus, our running will not necessarily lead to victory. Yvonne helps a man walk who has Parkinson s. One of the effects of Parkinson s is that somehow the thoughts in your brain don t make it to your feet. At times it takes intentional concentration to convince his feet to move. Interestingly enough, in order to be successful, he needs to look ahead to where he wants to go and not to his feet. The same is true of our walk with Jesus. Our growth, our goals, our victory, is found as we keep our eyes on Jesus. You may remember WWJD, What would Jesus Do?. We don t see WWJD as much anymore but the idea still is good. Fixing our eyes on Jesus naturally asks what would Jesus do? In this Easter season we are reminded of the cross that Jesus bore. Hebrews says He did this with joy. Jesus no doubt had his eyes fixed on God the Father. This example demonstrates to us the joy that we can also experience by fixing our eyes on Jesus. Pastor Keith Nyce He who has ears to hear, let him hear (Matt 13:9) Everything in the kingdom depends upon whether or not we hear the word of God. Everything changes when I hear from God and act upon that word. I strongly advocate for a prayer life that is comprised mostly of silence. It s a great delight to talk to God, but it s even more thrilling when He talks to us. Things don t change when I talk to God; things change when God talks to me. So the power of prayer is found, not in convincing God of my agenda, but in waiting upon Him to hear His agenda. Psalm 95:7b says, If only you would listen to His voice. It says if because hearing His voice is conditional built upon the condition of quieting our hearts to listen. (Excerpts from Secrets of the Secret Place by Bob Sorge) Learning to listen to God is a challenging discipline. Be prepared to make this discipline a life-long pursuit. Carol Zimmerman, Prayer Coordinator
3 FROM THE COMMUNITY PASTOR SABBATICAL PLANS FOR MARK/CATHY MENTZER My hope and reason for times like this are to return, with fresh strength & renewed passion, to pastoring. With the help of Church Council, a plan is in place for this time. Please pray for Cathy and I as the Lord brings us to your thinking. During these 90 days of sabbatical (April-June) I have developed a plan to help build personal character, to be inspired through hearing the Voice of God and to expand my understanding of what God is currently doing around us in Lancaster County. PERSONAL CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT I plan to read the course requirements for The Anabaptist Story: A Survey (a class offered through Evangelical Seminary) Becker, Palmer. Anabaptist Essentials: Ten Signs of a Unique Christian Faith. Herald Press, 2017 Bender, Harold S. The Anabaptist Vision, Global Anabaptist Mennonite Encyclopedia Online Klaassen, Walter. Anabaptism: Neither Catholic nor Protestant, 3 rd ed., Pandora Press, Neufeld, Alfred. What We Believe Together, Good Books, Roth, John D. Stories: How Mennonites Came to Be, Herald Press, Ruth, John L. Forgiveness: A Legacy of the W. Nickel Mines Amish School. 2 nd ed., Herald Press, "Schleitheim Confession (Anabaptist, 1527)." Global Anabaptist Mennonite Encyclopedia Online Simons, Menno. Confession and The New Birth. Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society, Snyder, C. Arnold. Following in the Footsteps of Jesus: The Anabaptist Tradition. Orbis Books, Weaver, J. Denny. Becoming Anabaptist: The Origin & Significance of 16 th Century Anabaptism. 2 nd ed., Herald Press, 2005 Williams, Stuart Murray. The Naked Anabaptist: The Bare Essentials of a Radical Faith, Herald Press, HEARING THE VOICE OF GOD With the day-to-day responsibilities removed, I look forward to hearing from The Lord in fresh & new ways. I plan frequent visits to 24/7 Gateway House of Prayer (Ephrata) & times of solitude in Southern Lancaster Co woods. EXPANDING MY UNDERSTANDING -Cathy/I plan to attend many different churches to experience how they approach collective worship services. -I plan to log these visits to use the experiences to help SMC to be a relevant, life-giving church. -We also hope to go on a 2-3 week trip through some of the Western United States--continuing to visit churches & experience as much as we can in hopes of broadening my vision to see beyond Lancaster County---as good as it is. 7 Hello from North Carolina, FROM THE WARFELS: This is the first prayer letter that we are sending via Mail Chimp. There are a number of news items that we would like to share with you. In early December, Evan began working for a small retail company near Charlotte, NC, that sells and repairs electronic devices, especially cell phones and accessories. He is enjoying this full-time job where he is able to use his technical skills to repair phones and computers. He is growing in his ability to interact with customers and help them to find a phone and plan to fit their needs. We re delighted to see Evan in a role that is well-suited to him. On January 19, Rachelle s boyfriend, Ben Davis, proposed near a lighthouse on the NC coast, and she joyfully said yes! Ben s family lives just a few miles from us here in North Carolina. Ben is living in the Washington, DC area, where he serves in international relations with Wycliffe & SIL. Rachelle recently found a nursing job in Charlotte and is currently going through the orientation required for that. Plans are underway for a summer wedding. We are happy for their desire to serve the Lord together. Angela has been working at a school in SC for about 14 months, but she has recently been promoted to a position of increased responsibility. She seems to be thriving at the school in general and in this new position in particular. We are happy to see her using her God-given gifts to honor Him. On January 26, Anita's mother, Marlyss, was moved into a memory care unit of a nursing home in Peoria, IL, because of her accelerating Alzheimer s symptoms. This facility provides a good environment for her, and we are very thankful for the care she is receiving. Anita s brother, John, lives only a few miles away and remains very involved in her life. We re grateful for his willingness to oversee Mom s care. Plans are being discussed for a Rapid Word Collection workshop for a Midwestern Native American group which Kevin may be involved in this summer. We ll share more details as we learn them. Some other groups have expressed an interest, but nothing definite is on the calendar. During the past two years here at JAARS, many new staff have come to serve in various roles. But, one department, the Auto Shop, has had to discontinue service to JAARS and Wycliffe members vehicles, due to a shortage of staff. We used to have car repairs done by the JAARS Auto Shop, but now we have to go elsewhere and pay a higher rate for labor. Please pray for more volunteer mechanics so that the shop can reopen to Wycliffe members and JAARS staff. Isaiah 64:4 Since ancient times no one has heard, no ear has perceived, no eye has seen any God besides you, who acts on behalf of those who wait for him. We thank the Lord for upholding us and answering prayers far beyond what we expect! Blessings of God's love and care, Kevin & Anita
8 FROM THE MASTS: The dental outreach went especially well this year. This was dental team #9 to Chile with our dentist friend Greg Johnson. And this was the fifth year in a row we have served the clinic at the church in Puerto Montt and with YWAM on the remote island of Chiloe. The set up for the team for me was made smoother due to the fact Greg & Stacey are now living here in Chile. They have sold their house and dental practice in Harrisonburg and plan to serve as missionaries full time. We actually planned an extra day in Chiloe since the needs seem greater there. About 150 persons were treated in Puerto Montt and at least that many in Chiloe as well. I was invited to stay over in the YWAM base and teach in the DTS on Servanthood. The morning I taught Psalm 71:18 was in my readings about teaching & equipping following generations! The students were eager to hear stories from my years in missions; the more years, the more testimonies! It was really a worthwhile time. With that I ll close. Thanks for your faithfulness to pray!
