1 Black Forest Lutheran Church January, 2019 Vol II The Scribe Epiphany Now that the wise men seeking Jesus have found him, we enter the season of Epiphany. The Greek word epiphany means appearing. It can refer to a star appearing in the sky like the one that led the wisemen. Or it can be someone standing in the dark who is revealed when the light suddenly shines on them. On Sunday mornings of this season, spanning January and February, the spot light shines on Jesus and we will see just who he is, as God s Son, the source of life, love, peace, and light. And because he is our Lord and we his followers, we'll see more clearly who we are, as he lives through us. New Adult Classes have begun. -New Member-in sanctuary -St. Nicholas-The Real Story-upstairs The Great War How did WWI effect individuals on both sides? What effects from the war still linger today? Mark Ewig, historian, teacher, and my good friend will give a presentation, The Great War, here at BFLC on Thursday, January 24 at 7:00p. Since this is free and open to the public, I encourage you to invite a friend or neighbor. Details on pg. 4. Annual Meeting Sunday, January 27 at 11:45a. Potluck
2 Book Stew 2019-Lots and lots of books!!! The Book Stew will go til Feb. 3. This year s proceeds will be donated to the Salvation Army s Support for Veterans. Thank you for your continued support and donations. New Lecture Series On Tuesdays at 11:30a we have begun a new lecture series for those that would like to join us for Lecture and Lunch. The last lecture series that we finished in Dec was about the history of the American West and we are going to continue with our study of different regions of the US with a new series on the South. The American South constantly appears in films, novels, music and television often in mythical form. The actual history of the South, it turns out, was more interesting than the mythology. The Thursday evening Ladies Bible Study will be reading Developing a Servant's Heart by Charles Stanley. We welcome anyone who would like to join us. We meet at church from 6:30-8:00p in the classroom upstairs. Questions, please contact Karen Gourley or Paige Summerfield.
3 Senior Social Starts up on January 23 at 1:00p in the fellowship hall! Join us for our monthly get together to socialize, play dominoes, or do crafts. There is no obligation to participate in the games. Individuals bring their own crafts to work on. Others use the opportunity to just sit and talk. Light snacks are provided. Annual Meeting Sunday, January 27 at 11:45a Potluck, bring a dish to share! Budget Forum this Sunday at 9:30a meeting upstairs. Post-Retirement Planning Once fully retired, sometimes things go on autopilot, and planning and adjusting for your family s unique situation is sometimes overlooked. Please join Melissa Devolve, CFP, on Thursday, January 24-11am - 1pm - for a conversation about planning for the later years. We will discuss what we have seen as best practices for individuals, couples, and families as their lives change during retirement, and how best to prepare for this season of your life. Lunch will be served. Please RSVP by January 21 to Mary Montie at maryemontie@yahoo.com.
4 The Great War A presentation on WWI by historian Mark Ewig Thursday, Jan. 24 at 7:00p Black Forest Lutheran Church Black Forest Road, Title: The Great War: How the FIVE As Alliances, Armaments, Attrition, America, and Armistice (and beyond) affected the lives of those who fought and the effects TODAY Summary: The presentation focuses on how naïve the participants were in that a series of alliances led to a war that no one expected. French and German preparations, as well as advancements in armaments, led to a gruesome war of attrition never seen before. Worldwide in scope, America entered late but still suffered severely more than the great battles of the Civil War and WWII. The results of the WWI armistice affected Europe and the world for the next 80 years, and some effects, especially in the Middle East, still cause tensions today. There will be individual stories of regular people who lives became entwined in this catastrophe. Biography: Mark Ewig has spent his life studying the world. With a B.S. degree from the AF Academy (International Affairs major) and a M.A. from the University of Utah in Middle Eastern Studies, Mark spent 26 years in the Air Force in the intelligence field having served in Thailand during the Vietnam War, Germany, United Kingdom, and Saudi Arabia. Upon his retirement, he went into public school teaching where he taught at both Lewis-Palmer and Palmer Ridge High Schools in Monument. His emphasis was on AP U.S. History. AP U.S. Government, and Micro and Macroeconomics. He received numerous local and state-wide awards in both history and economics. Mark retired after 20 years of public high school teaching this past May. Mark is married to the former Kristie Gates of Greeley, and they have 3 grown children and seven grandchildren. *In case of snow cancelation, the alternate date is Thursday, Jan. 31.
