Black Forest Lutheran Church October, 2018 Vol. I The Scribe Trees grow tall because they drink deeply. Here are ways to grow in your Christian faith. Pastor s Bible Study Tuesdays, 6:30p Genesis Here s the schedule: Oct. 2 Flood and the Tower Genesis 5, 6-9, 11 9 Abraham & Sarah (1) Genesis Abraham and Sarah (2) Genesis Isaac Genesis Jacob Genesis Nov. 6 Joseph Genesis So far we have covered creation and the fall and have seen our own strength and weaknesses in Adam and Eve. Join me as we see the same in Abraham and Sarah, Isaac, Jacob and Joseph and discover God s goodness in both their trust and doubt, faith and failures. Sunday Morning Adult Classes 9:30a Sept. 30 The Life of Apostle Paul-we continue the excellent CD Oct. 7 Our Neighbors Faith-we continue the study we began last spring. What do we share in common? How are we distinctive? The Grove Sunday, Oct. 7 5:00p I encourage you, whatever your age, to be a part of the Grove, beginning Oct. 7. Through music, message, and meal, you have another way to grow in faith and know each other better. See details pg. 2.
THE GROVE The Grove is a time every 1st and 3rd Sunday evening from 5-6pm, to share in each other s lives and embrace the community with which God has blessed us. We come together at 5:00P for minutes of prayer, music, and a brief devotional. But don t be fooled. This time is crafted for folks who are 9 months, 9 years, or 99 years old. We love noisy babies, restless toddlers, angsty teenagers, busy adults and tired retirees. Sit, stand, crawl, dance, the point of this time is to simply be comfortable and enjoy the good company. At about 5:30 we will have a meal. We all love to eat and some of the best experiences of life are over a warm plate. We know life is busy and young ones need their rest so if you re ready to call it a night after dinner, by all means feel free to head out. If the night still feels young, then by shortly after 6 we will often have some rotating fun event or extra gathering for the evening. Talks around a fire pit, parent support groups, flashlight tag in the woods, making charitable crafts for those in need, the time after 6pm may look different each time we meet but will always fill your soul and help further build you into the community. God has knit us together like the roots of an aspen and we would love to grow with you when The Grove begins on Sunday, October 7 th at 5pm! Jeremy is looking for VOLUNTEERS! We re getting ready to kick off some great stuff for the fall, but we need some more volunteers to help with the youth, Sunday school and The Grove. For The Grove, we specifically need volunteers for the music and meal rotations (you d end up serving about once every two months). Jeremy at TheGrove@bflchurch.org or call/text him at

Influencing Others Thru Stewardship Stewardship will begin sharing through God's influence on us, we have given the gifts and opportunity to influence others through the use of our time, talents, treasure, and testimony. Beginning October 14th, the Stewardship Committee will be offering stories of how some have been challenged, grown their faith, and been a recipient of someone else's kind act. Join us on November 11th as we celebrate the journey of being God's steward.
BFLC Book Group Reads Non-fiction in October We will be reading and discussing The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot Join us at the church for discussion on Wed., Oct. 17 th at 1 PM Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. She was a poor Southern tobacco farmer, yet her cells--taken without her knowledge--became one of the most important tools in medicine. The first "immortal" human cells grown in culture, they are still alive today, though she has been dead for more than sixty years. HeLa cells were vital for developing the polio vaccine; uncovered secrets of cancer and viruses; helped lead to in vitro fertilization, cloning, and gene mapping; and have been bought and sold by the billions. Yet Henrietta Lacks is buried in an unmarked grave. Her family did not learn of her "immortality" until more than twenty years after her death, when scientists began using her husband and children in research without informed consent. The story of the Lacks family is inextricably connected to the dark history of experimentation on African Americans, the birth of bioethics, and the legal battles over whether we control the stuff we are made of. Copies of the book on loan from the Pikes Peak Library District Book Club Collection are available in the church office to be signed out. Contact: Nancy Lord. Senior Social Oct. 24 at 1:00p Join us for our monthly get together to socialize, play dominoes, or do crafts. There is no obligation to participate in the games. Individuals bring their own crafts to work on. Others use the opportunity to just sit and talk. Light snacks are provided.
Have you noticed the new sign at the Black Forest Road entrance? The property committee has been investigating sign options for several years and thanks to the efforts of Brian Green, John Poss, and Vern Regennitter, we were able to procure a new one and have it installed last month. These gentlemen put in many hours of investigation as to cost and visibility of a new sign that would remain aesthetically pleasing to the forest environment in which we worship. Great job! Pumpkin Carving and Chili Cook-Off! Come show up your chili cooking skills by bringing your best dish (spicy or otherwise) to the dinner at The Grove on October 21 st! Sign up with Jeremy or on the sheet in the Fellowship Hall to note the type of chili you ll be bringing. Oh, and did I mention that there will be prizes in the areas of Best Overall Taste, Most Creative, and Best Balance of Spice? Then jump into the fall spirit with some family pumpkin carving after The Grove at 6pm! Pumpkins, craft supplies and carving tools will be provided so that folks of all ages can decorate or create a Jack O Lantern!
Didi in the Congo Didi is in the midst of a visit by World Mission Prayer league people. Paul is the General Director and Gloria is a nurse from Kenya. They are there to better understand the mission in Boma. Didi will take them to see the farmers and the orphans; two important groups in his mission work. They also went to the College where Didi is the interim manager and an instructor. Paul has preached and they are getting to see the area. The visit is particularly important because communication is always tough between Boma and the US. Please pray for the safety of the visitors, as well as for Didi and Serafina. Dive Deeper Who is God? How does science work with my faith? How is God all loving and yet there is so much pain in the world? These are all huge questions but that doesn t mean we should be scared to ask them. Every Sunday morning from 9:30-10:15 in the high school room, middle and high school students will venture together through the depths of these ideas. Come with your most challenging thoughts and we ll work through them together!
2 nd Sunday Support Ball games and bullying, prom and peer pressure, raising a middle or high schooler is filled with incredible joys and outstanding trials. Come and share with other parents who are going through the journey of raising a teenager every second Sunday from 6:30-8 in the fellowship hall. We ll have a safe space to share our joys and trials, have a discussion on how to navigate specific subjects of teen life, and pray for each other s families. Marriage Retreat Would you like the opportunity to get away as a couple and just focus on God and each other? We are starting a list of couples who may be interested in going to Rainbow Trail Lutheran Camp for a weekend retreat. Contact: Lisa I am just so excited to offer this to all of you! Marriage is hard and can be stressful, that is why we need to take times like these for each other! ~Lisa
