THE SCRIPT The unfolding story between God and God s people at Westminster Presbyterian Church. Everyone has a part to play. May 2010 A Word From The Pastor A RED-LETTER DAY! On the day of Pentecost we celebrate the gift of the Spirit of God to the people of God. Before Jesus ascended into heaven, he promised we would receive power to be his witnesses to the ends of the earth (Acts 1:8), and this promise is fulfilled in the gift of God's Spirit. All we do at church, home, and work to build up God's kingdom of love, peace and justice, is supported and enhanced by God's Spirit working in, among, and through us. On Sunday, May 23, join others in celebrating the gift of the Spirit at Pentecost by wearing RED to church and bringing a RED food item for our Pentecost luncheon following the service. The Spirit is often symbolized as red fire, in that it enlightens our spirits and inflames our passion for the good news of a God who loves us, claims us, and gives purpose and meaning to our lives. In a practical sense, Pentecost Sunday also marks the end of our church's program year and the beginning of our summer schedule. Our summer worship schedule will begin on Sunday, June 6, with two services of worship sandwiching our summer adult education offering. The early service at 8:30 a.m. on the Johnstone Patio provides an intimate and interactive worship experience in the beauty of nature, while the traditional 10:30 a.m. service will continue to provide the music, liturgy, and passion that you have come to expect. God's Spirit is alive and with us, both as individuals and as a church family, empowering us to be God's people. Join others in celebrating the gift through the wearing of RED on Sunday, May 23, Pastor Derek VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL COMING SOON TO WESTMINSTER JULY 12th 16th 9:00 am - noon Kids 3 years old thru 5th grade are invited! Adult and student volunteers are needed Contact Laurel Labbe at or llabbe@roadrunner.com or the church

TAILGATE TAG SALE Spring cleaning time is here! What can I do to get rid of my clutter?? I still want to do something for victims of the Haiti earthquake any ideas? WPC will be sponsoring a tag sale in the Rockynol parking lot on Saturday, May 22, from 9:00-1:00. Here s how it works: Bring PRICED items the day of the sale and set up a station to sell them. The sale will be strictly in the parking lot, as the church will only be open for restroom use. There will be NO pre-sale storage of items, and no one to pre-price them. Bring a card table or just open your trunk and set up a station to sell your own items, or get together with a friend many hands make light work. Proceeds will be collected at the end of the day and donated to Presbyterian Disaster Assistance for victims of the Haiti earthquake. A pickup by Salvation Army will be arranged at the end of the day for any unsold items that people do not wish to take home. All smaller items must be put into containers, either bags or boxes, before the Salvation Army truck arrives. Everyone will be responsible for making sure that none of the items they bring are left behind. PENTECOST OFFERING On the Day of Pentecost the Spirit of God was poured out on the church, and is still God s gift to all believers. The Spirit is no respecter of age it often uses children and youth to accomplish God s purposes. Yet, in today s world, many young people live without hope for the future or support to meet daily needs. What better place could there be to make spiritual and financial investments than in our children and youth? On Sunday, May 23, Westminster will receive the Pentecost Offering. 40% of this offering will be used in our community to help children and youth at risk, and 60% will go to the General Assembly to be used for the same purpose. All of these ministries act to help bring God s love and care to younger members of His family. There will be envelopes in the pews for your convenience, or you can mail your check to the church and mark it Pentecost. Please be generous - together we can make a difference in the lives of children in need.

From the Outreach Committee Our spring mission trip to Burgill, Ohio for 2010 is upon us. A group representing WPC will join forces with five other congregations from Eastminster Presbytery from May 5th through May 9th. We will repair cabin roofs, paint fences, clean a pool house, tidy up landscaping and perform other tasks that will help the Joseph Badger Meadows church camp look nice for its hundreds of summer and autumn guests. Although there appears to be a good number of volunteers to do the work, there is still a need for money to help defray the cost of the projects at the camp. If you would like to help by making a donation to our efforts, please make your checks payable to Westminster Presbyterian Church and include JBM in the memo. There is also a need for brownies, cookies, fresh fruit, and cases of bottled water and soft drinks, if you would prefer that type of donation. These items need to be at the church before 2:00 on Wednesday, May 5th. If you have any questions, contact Pat Santelli at psantelli@sbcglobal.net ANDERSON MEMORIAL LIBRARY NEWS Because of the generosity of member Judge White, we were able to purchase several more new books. They are Practice Resurrection: A Conversation on Growing Up in Christ by Eugene Peterson and Enough: Discovering Joy Through Simplicity and Generosity by Adam Hamilton. Peterson uses the book of Ephesians to explore and to emphasize the importance of Christian growth and character formation. Enough is a call to strengthen our Christian financial discipleship, to reduce our consumption, and to find joy in the simple. Sue and Wayne Greene have donated some children s books and also some Hermie & Friends children s DVDs. From the Louise Jacobs fund, the Library has purchased several new VeggieTales DVDs as well. Thank you to everyone for your generosity! Look for these new items soon! Stop by and see what the Library has to offer! We will be having a used book sale on May 30. We are asking for goodwill offerings for the items. Please stop by our table and be prepared to give generously. All funds given will be used to purchase new books and other items for the Library. Hilda and Kirt Bromley, who are the organizers of the Books for Africa project, have moved from the Copley area to St. Louis to be near their daughter. Therefore, they no longer collect books locally. Any donated books would need to be shipped, and our library does not have the funds for shipping. They still, however, accept donations. For details on how to donate, or to find out about an upcoming fundraiser to be held at St. Bernard Church, please read the latest letter from the Bromleys posted on the bulletin board across from the coatroom in W-H Hall. PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN S SALAD LUNCHEON May 11 at noon. Childcare provided. Cost $4.00. Program on Christian Love and Marriage by Pastors Derek and Amy Starr Redwine The Birthday offering will be collected. Please call the church office to register.

Sundays, May 2, 9, and 16 at 9:15 a.m. Wright-Herberich Hall We are increasingly a nation divided by God. Although we all believe in religious liberty, we cannot agree on what the relationship between religion and government should be. During this class, participants will look at the origin and history of the church/state division in our nation, discuss the current battle between values evangelicalism and legal secularism, and look at how we can move forward as a nation. How much should people of faith be permitted to use their values in setting public policy? Is there a place for religious symbols in common life? How appropriate is the state-supported, faith-based groups? What does Jesus have to say about the church/state divide? SUMMER ADULT BUBLE STUDY The Discipleship Committee is pleased to be offering again this year a Summer Adult Bible Study. The preacher and teacher for this year's study is the Rev. Amy Miracle, the senior pastor at Broad Street Presbyterian Church in Columbus, Ohio. She is an engaging pastor and teacher and has a gift for making the Bible come to life for 21st century Christians. Using scriptures, music, and movie clips Rev. Miracle will be looking at how our story ends. What do we know about the life to come? What can we say about heaven, judgment, and the 2 nd coming of Jesus? Sunday, June 27 - Sunday sermon and an early dinner/ lecture (children activities provided) Monday, June 28 - evening lecture (childcare provided) Please mark your calendars for this opportunity for adults. Rev. Miracle's sermon and education classes are sure to be ones you won't soon forget! PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN S CIRCLES There are six different and distinctive Circles in which women of Westminster can participate. If you are interested in joining other women for fellowship, Bible study, outreach and mission, contact westminsterakron@gmail.com or call the church office for more information. Getting the Word Out. The deadline for announcements and articles for the June/July Script is Friday, May 14th, 2009.

WESTMINSTER Ways to SERVE JOSEPH BADGER MEADOWS MISSION TRIP There are a good number of volunteers that will be participating in the JBM mission trip on May 5-9, but there is still a need for money to help defray the cost of the projects at the camp. If you would like to help by making a donation to our efforts, please make your checks payable to Westminster Presbyterian Church and include JBM in the memo. There is also a need for brownies, cookies, fresh fruit, and cases of bottled water and soft drinks, if you would prefer that type of donation. These items need to be at the church before 2:00 on May 5. BENEFIT FOR HAITI RELIEF Please save your unneeded items for our trunk tag sale that will be held in the Rockynol parking lot on Saturday, May 22, from 9-1. All proceeds from the sale of these items will go to Presbyterian Disaster Assistance to be used to aid the victims of the Haiti earthquake. Please bring your PRICED items the morning of the sale (no early drop-offs); set up and stay with your items until 1:00, then place any unsold items that you don t want to take home into containers. (Bags or boxes). The Salvation Army will pick up the items that are left. FOOD COLLECTION SUNDAY Please bring non-perishable food items to worship on the first Sunday of the month. You can also drop off food during the month in the blue box located in the coat room off Wright- Herberich Hall. The food is given to Good Neighbors to help feed the hungry in Akron. FOOD FOR LIFE Join us for sandwich making on the first and third Saturday of each month at 8:45 a.m. in the kitchen. These sandwiches are provided to St. Bernard s Catholic Church for their soup kitchen. Please call Lee Davies at if you have any questions. PARISH NURSES SUNDAY, MAY 16 10:00-10:30 AND 11:30-12:00 in sanctuary office next to the chapel, located behind the sanctuary cross. Blood pressure checks and health questions or concerns answered. CELTIC GARDEN Some gardeners have already been working in the garden. Perennials were divided and sold at our plant sale on April 24. Thanks to all who shared their plants and to all who bought them. Also, thanks to everyone who helped to erect the tent. Have you noticed how the rose arbor sparkles? Many thanks to Chuck Wilson, who took on this very laborious painting project! We will be working in the garden on the following dates: Saturday, May 1, Saturday, May 8, and Friday, May 14; on Saturday, May 15, we will plant our annuals. We will be back working on Saturday, May 29. All work times begin at 9:30. We always welcome new gardeners come and learn along Other News PRESBYTERIAN COFFEE PROJECT During coffee hour in Wright-Herberich Hall and also during other social functions, Westminster has been serving Fair Trade Coffee. Fair trade shares the bounty of the coffee trade with those who grow the crop, helping them build a better future for themselves and their communities. Through fair trade, farmers earn a fairer share of income, have access to services that are otherwise unavailable, and gain long-term trading partners they can trust. Fair trade coffee costs more than the mass-produced coffee that we can buy at Acme or Giant Eagle, but isn t it worth it to be able to help the small, family-based coffee growers to earn a decent living? There is always a donation basket available at coffee hour; if you enjoy a good cup of coffee, won t you consider throwing in some spare change or a dollar or two each Sunday to help defray the cost of serving this very important commodity? The hard-working coffee growers deserve fair prices for their crops. PULPIT SWAP SUNDAY, MAY 30 On Sunday, May 30, the Rev. Amy Starr Redwine will be preaching at Westminster Presbyterian Church, while the Rev. Derek Starr Redwine will be preaching at the church Amy serves, Firestone Park Presbyerian Church. TEN WEEKS OF SUMMER From Sunday, June 6 to Sunday, August 8, 2010, you are invited to participate in our summer Sunday morning schedule. The early service at 8:30 a.m on the Johnstone Patio provides an intimate and interactive worship experience in the beauty of nature, while the traditional 10:30 a.m. service will continue to provide the music, liturgy, and passion that you have come to expect from worship at Westminster. Adult Education takes place at 9:30 a.m. in the fellowship hall. Childcare will be available throughout the morning. SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES FOR FAMILIES Alive Music Festival June Atwood Lake Park This is an inexpensive, family-friendly music festival located at Atwood Lake Park south of Canton. 8 The Post Script... Student Ministries The Middle School looked at Christian music as the medium for the Message during Lent. We ve reviewed different genres of music and introduced students to positive, quality music that can help keep us focused on God. One of the unique opportunities we have in Akron is the proximity of the Alive Music Festival ( June 23-26, in Mineral Lake, OH. We would love to have a group of folks from Westminster head down to the Festival, even if only for a day. I know we ll have some students camping. I would encourage families to investigate the website and consider using a little vacation time for an awesome display of Christian music. Please contact baldguycarl@gmail.com to figure out how to make it work. This is a great event for individuals, couples, families, anyone who enjoys contemporary music. Even better, the environment is ideal for families and an excellent way to learn more about quality Christian music. (Friday night alone is worth the ticket). Save the date and let s make it happen. We would love to connect people who are interested in going. There are some that will be there the entire time and some who d like to go for a day. Contact Carl and see how you can make Alive a part of your summer plans. Student Ministries May-nia! We ve got all sorts of things on tap for May.
