We invite you to come into the heart of our own magnificent central desert to rest, play, reflect, and create reflective (or raucous!) ritual in community. 8 Enrol or Audit Session 2 Evening Classes Are you interested in learning about the European Reformation or want to think rigorously about how to integrate life, faith and action? Through Charles Sturt University, St Mark s will be offering two subjects, European Reformations, and Practical Theology, as evening classes in Canberra during Session 2. Revd Dr Ian Coutts will teach the Practical Theology subject on Tuesday evenings and church history lecturer Dr Michael Gladwin will teach European Reformations, on Wednesday evenings. You can enrol in the subject as a single subject offering through CSU or audit the subject. For more information see information on St Mark's website Practical Theology Practical Theology is the name for not one but at least four distinct and/or overlapping strands. These include i) practical theology as faith in action, or lived faith, ii) the name given to the practical nuts and bolts training for Christian ministry, iii) a particular methodology for helping address a specific issue or problem and iv) a growing University discipline addressing a wide range of issues confronting society and the church. This introductory course on Practical Theology attempts to introduce all these strands and examine them in more detail. Practical theology as a Uni subject and a methodology draws together the different theological subdisciplines and makes deliberate use of cross-disciplinary material and approaches. It is a rapidly growing and evolving field of study with practical implications for individuals, the church and society. Lecturer Revd Dr Ian Coutts Location St Mark s National Theological Centre, 15 Blackall Street, Barton, ACT Date 12th July 11th October (including a 2 week break from 22 Aug 2 Sept) Day Tuesday, 12 sessions Time 5:30 8:30pm Cost $1000 single subject or $240 audit Subject materials NA 8

9 European Reformations, European Reformations, charts the history of one of the most fascinating and influential periods in world history. Martin Luther s criticisms of the Church, aided by technological innovations such as the printing press, precipitated the creation of Protestant churches in Europe. As we shall see, however, the Protestant challenge spurred reform and renewal within the Roman Catholic Church. This coincided with the Age of Discovery and the expansion of Europe (and western Christianity with it) into a global power from the 1400s onwards. Roman Catholic missions took the Church s message to the Far East, India, China and the Americas. Closer to home, rivalry with Islam was an ever-present reality on the borders of Europe. While the impact of the Reformation was a factor in major wars and political realignments in Europe and Great Britain, its influence was further felt in literature, philosophy, economics, architecture, science and the arts. Lecturer Dr Michael Gladwin Location St Mark's National Theological Centre, 15 Blackall Street, Barton Date 13th July - 12th October (including a 2 week break from 22 August - 2 September) Day Wednesday, 12 sessions Time 5.30pm pm Cost $1000 single subject or $240 audit Subject materials Wallace, Peter G.The long European reformation, 2nd edition, Basingstoke, Palgrave, Dickens, A.
