Every year, the Diocese hosts this conference/day long retreat to renew all of the faithful in the love of the source and summit of our faith, Jesus Christ truly present in the Eucharist. Also, every year, the parishes of the diocese are assigned a visiting missionary to remind us of the Christian call to serve the poor and proclaim the Good News throughout the world. This year, these two happen to fall together for us at Sacred Heart in the span of three days. They are more connected than you might think at first glance. Here is the text from paragraph 1397 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church: The Eucharist commits us to the poor. To receive in truth the Body and Blood of Christ given up for us, we must recognize Christ in the poorest, his brethren: You have tasted the Blood of the Lord, yet you do not recognize your brother, You dishonor this table when you do not judge worthy of sharing your food someone judged worthy to take part in this meal... God freed you from all your sins and invited you here, but you have not become more merciful. The second half of paragraph 1397 is a quote from St. John Chrysostom warning us against the dangers of not imitating what we have received. With these two events falling on the same weekend for us this year, may I suggest as your pastor (and this is advice I tend to follow myself) examining your conscience to make sure that as you receive frequently the outpouring of love that is the Eucharist, how are you then responding to those around you who are in need? Since Fostering Unity in SHCS Middle School When parents and schools work together to build a strong sense of community, everyone benefits. Students feel welcome and are more likely to take a more active role in the classroom. Moreover, research shows that children attending schools with a strong community are more likely to be academically motivated. It s not always easy, but it s worthwhile. Becoming a student in our Sacred Heart middle school means becoming a member of our Lady Houses. The House of Fatima The House of Guadalupe The House of Lourdes Each House is named for an apparition of the Blessed Mother, Mary. Once placed in a House, our students become a part of that House for all of his/her time in middle school at Sacred Heart. The goal of this program is to foster unity among the grades in middle school, providing the sixth graders with earlier opportunities to feel a part of whole middle school student body. Students have the opportunity to build relationships with peers outside of their homerooms/grades as well as the social groups to which they are accustomed. Each House is led by a middle school teacher (s) as Head of House. Students look to their Head of House as a mentor. Our hopes are that sixth graders will also look to older students as mentors, with the understanding that seventh and eighth graders will accept and honor those roles as leaders within their houses. 6

7 AFFABILITY This year, SHCS is so excited to introduce our new school-wide program, Disciple of Christ - Education in Virtue. This program was developed by the Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist. It is a Christian curriculum structured on the teachings of St. Thomas Aquinas regarding the virtues and gifts of the Holy Spirit. It aims to provide a consistent structure and systematic instruction for youth to learn about the virtues so that they can form the habits and dispositions necessary to live as disciples of Jesus Christ. This curriculum emphasizes Christian discipleship as indispensable toward human flourishing and the quest for joy, firmly conveying the reality that happiness is found in a life of holiness. Mrs. Michelle Maher is leading our faculty, staff, and students through great lessons of virtue. In our school, the call to discipleship is extended not only to the students but also to their parents, the faculty, the staff, and the administration. On weekly basis, a new virtue will be introduced to the entire school while further exploration of its many facets will be discussed in religion classes. Our aim is to foster a school culture based on these virtues, referring to them throughout the day, when they are exhibited and when they are not. Our first virtue was affability. Do you know what that means? The act of being affable friendly, easy to talk to, and good-natured. What a perfect virtue for the first week of school! Eckert Queridos Amigos, Este fin de semana reúne el Congreso Eucarístico Diocesano anual en Charlotte y también nuestro Llamado Misionero anual. Cada año, la Diócesis organiza esta conferencia / día de retiro para renovar a todos los fieles en el amor de la fuente y cumbre de nuestra fe, Jesucristo verdaderamente presente en la Eucaristía. Además, todos los años, las parroquias de la diócesis se les asigna un misionero visitante para recordarnos el llamado cristiano de servir a los pobres y proclamar las Buenas Nuevas en todo el mundo. Este año, estos dos caen juntos en Sagrado Corazón en el lapso de tres días. Están más conectados de lo que piensas a primera vista. Aquí está el texto del párrafo 1397 del Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica: "La Eucaristía nos compromete con los pobres. Para recibir en verdad el Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo entregados por nosotros, debemos reconocer a Cristo en los más pobres, sus hermanos: Has probado la Sangre del Señor, sin embargo, no reconoces a tu hermano, Deshonras esta mesa cuando no juzgas digna de compartir tu comida a alguien que se juzgó digna de tomar parte en esta comida. Dios te liberó de todos tus pecados y te invité aquí, pero no te has vuelto más misericordioso ". La segunda mitad del párrafo 1397 es una cita de San Juan Crisóstomo advirtiéndonos contra los peligros de no imitar lo que hemos recibido. Con estos dos eventos cayendo en el mismo fin de semana para nosotros este año, sugiero como su pastor (y este es un consejo que tiendo a seguir) que mientras recibe con frecuencia el derramamiento de amor que es la Eucaristía, examine su conciencia y pregunte " Cómo estoy respondiendo a quienes me rodean y están en necesidad?" Pidamos en oración para que todos nosotros podamos ser más devotos en la Eucaristía y comprometidos con los pobres. Atentamente en Cristo, Padre John 8

9 DEBES VER MÁS ALLÁ DE LAS APARIENCIAS La frase vestido de domingo ha perdido gran parte de su significado en la sociedad actual. Algunos se lamentan de que la gente ya no se ponga elegante para asistir a la iglesia los domingos; otros consideran que es un síntoma saludable que nos vistamos tan informalmente cuando nos reunimos ante el Señor como en los demás lugares. Sin importar cuál sea nuestra opinión sobre este tema, Santiago seguramente nos reprendería. En ambos casos, seguimos centrándonos en las apariencias, creyendo que suponen una especie de posición privilegiada ante Dios. Es cierto, Santiago critica a la comunidad que favorece a los ricos y bien vestidos mientras condena al ostracismo a los que están pobremente vestidos, pero critica aún más a quienes hacen distinciones y toman decisiones en base a criterios que nada tienen que ver con el Reino de Dios. Puede que Santiago enfoque nuestra atención hacia el Reino de Dios que describe Isaías, en el cual la gente es curada y la tierra se hace fértil para dar fruto. Jesús hoy se enfoca en este Reino de Dios cuando cura a un gentil en una región hostil a su fe judía, sin tener en cuenta el origen, la vestimenta ni la condición social de este hombre, ni siquiera su habilidad para retribuirle la atención. Isaías, Santiago y Jesús en el Evangelio según san Marcos nos llaman a ir más allá de las apariencias para averiguar dónde se debe hacer y se ha hecho la voluntad de Dios, así en la tierra como en el cielo. RADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE En muchos países latinoamericanos la Fiesta de la Santa Cruz se celebra el 3 de mayo, pero la Iglesia universal la celebra el 14 de septiembre. La fiesta del 14 de septiembre conmemora la consagración del santuario del Santo Sepulcro en Jerusalén. Este es el santuario más importante de la religión cristiana, pues en él se encuentran tanto el monte del Calvario donde falleció Jesús como el sepulcro del cual resucitó al tercer día. Sin estos dos acontecimientos no hubiese cristianismo. Nosotros los latinos tenemos muchas fiestas y muchos santuarios. Ninguna de éstas puede ser más importante que las que recuerdan la Pasión, Muerte y Resurrección de Jesús. La Santa Misa de esta gran Fiesta estará celebrada a las 7:00am aquí en Sagrado Corazón.
