1 Epistle from St. Timothy Evangelical Lutheran Church Worship takes work! February 2015 Volume 20, Issue 2 Sharing our faith by sharing God s love! As most of you know, one of my favorite things to do on a day off is to go flying. Although I ve been doing it for more than half a century, I ve never ceased to enjoy the experience. Flying is fun! But flying also requires work. Before I even think about heading to the airport, I go online to check the current and forecast weather and winds. Then, in today s post 911 world, I go to a different website and make sure the President hasn t decided to visit our area unexpectedly. When that happens, large blocks of airspace are restricted as no fly zones. After I arrive at the airport and pull the plane out of the hangar, I have to take time to inspect it. Is there oil leaking anywhere? Do I have enough fuel for the flight? Have any birdies decided to build a nest on the engine? And then, before actually departing, I take time to clear my head. I need to give full attention to the instruments, to the sound of the engine, and to other air traffic that may be in the area. Now, at last, I am ready to go have fun! Worship can be inspirational; it can strengthen and uplift you. At worship, God reaches out to you in Word and in the Lord s Supper. At worship you find support and caring among the members of God s family. At worship, you gain strength for next week s journey through life. But like flying, worship also requires work. In fact, the word liturgy means public work or service. The most basic step is to leave behind whatever stresses and demands life may be imposing on you right now, and come to church. But as you know, that s easier said than done. For some people, Sunday is the only day with time to get at those demands. If you do make it to the church, you still need to take time to clear your head. Your body may be here, but your mind still is captive to those same stresses and demands. That s why we have a Prelude prior to starting the service. And worship is not entertainment. To receive the benefits God offers, you need to engage in the service through singing, praying, and actively listening to the Word of God. Worship can be a powerful and uplifting experience. But worship takes work! St. Timothy Mission Statement Nurtured and sustained by God s love, we are called and inspired to share His love with our neighbor, to make God s story known, and to help our neighbors near and far so that all may experience God s love.

3 February 2015 Page 3 February is heart month. February 6 is Wear Red Day for women. Know the signs, symptoms, and risk factors of cardiac disease to reduce your risk of a cardiac event. Signs of a Heart Attack: Chest discomfort Discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes or goes away and comes back should not be ignored. Words used to describe the discomfort are squeezing, fullness, vice-like, heavy pressure, knife like, and intense pain. Discomfort in other areas Heart attack discomfort may also occur in one or both arms, the jaw, neck, back or stomach. Shortness of breath may occur with or without chest discomfort. Other signs and symptoms may include a cold sweat, nausea, or light-headedness. If someone experiences theses signs and symptoms, call 911 for transport to a hospital. DO NOT take the person in a car. The sooner advanced medical treatment is given to the person, the better the outcome. Major Risk Factors of Coronary Artery Disease: Those that cannot be changed: Increasing age, being of the male sex, and heredity. Those that can be changed: Smoking The risk for a smoker is 2-4 times that of a non-smoker. Heart Month Increased cholesterol Maintain your cholesterol below 180. Increasing blood pressure As the blood pressure increases, the workload of the heart increases, causing the heart muscle to become thicker and stiffer resulting in the heart not working properly. Physical activity Moderate intensity activity done on a regular basis offers a great benefit. Obesity/over weight leading to excess body fat, especially around the waist can be reduced to lower the workload of the heart. Minimize stress. Alcohol Drinking in excess can lead to an increase in blood pressure, triglycerides, an irregular heartbeat, and obesity. Diet and nutrition have a great impact on risk factors that can be changed. Maintain a diet rich in whole grains, vegetables, fruit, increased fiber, fish, lean protein, and fat free or low fat dairy. Coordinate your diet and activity/exercise on a daily basis to use up as many calories as taken it. Remember, weight control is based on calories in versus calories out. The majority of risk factors can be controlled. Do your part to minimize your risk of cardiovascular disease. 6 Volume 23, Issue 2 February 2015! SYNOD NEWS Northeastern Pennsylvania Synod, ELCA Christmas Miracles St. Luke, Allentown One morning in December a well-dressed gentleman showed up at the office. He handed the parish administrator a check for $500 to continue the work you are doing in the neighborhood. He refused to give his name. After he left, the administrator and a council member who was present looked outside to see where he headed, but he was gone. St. Luke plans to use the gift to help fund a computer lab used for ESL, job searches, and other services for Spanish speaking people in the neighborhood. Prince of Peace, Johnsonville Each year members of the congregation purchase Christmas gifts for children serviced by the Portland Upper Mount Bethel Pantry (PUMP). This December PUMP s director came to a service to thank the congregation for their support. She lamented that although they served over 300 Thanksgiving meals, PUMP had no funds for Christmas meals this year. The pastor and council challenged the members to raise $2,000. One member offered to match dollars up to $1,000; and over the next weeks they raised $3,700. Thanks to Prince of Peace, PUMP was again able to offer meals on Christmas Day. Reclaiming Jubilee This December, six youth traveled to Bethlehem Bethlehem, PA. The youth were able to experience the history, art, and culture of the city as they worked to understand the need for justice in the community, particularly around the issue of homelessness. Estella Wagner observed, Even the nice and pretty towns need help. God calls us to give and care everywhere. Brian Talley says that because of the experience, I have changed my outlook on life for the better. I see now that there are people out there on the streets that need our help with mostly everything. In the end my faith has changed for the better and stronger. The main service event was with an ecumenical emergency sheltering program to give food and shelter to the homeless in the coldest months of the year. Paul Reily observed, Working at the shelter really impacted my faith because it made me realize how much the churches in Bethlehem put into the shelters. Rachel Fenstermacher echoed Paul s thoughts. I really found that volunteering in the sheltering program showed me that people s lives are not always happy and fair. They push through hard stuff with the help of churches and volunteers. Kayla took notice that the saying, God will provide for us, is really true. It s truly amazing. In the end the question Isabel Stoeckly asks is one we should all think about as we work together for justice and jubilee: What if everyone helped in a small way?

7 Changes to Synod Staff Bishop Zeiser has announced staff changes following the retirement of Pastors Glenn Simmons and Gene Handwerk. Pastor Kurt Garbe will assume responsibility for the Lehigh Mission District, Bear Creek Camp, and planning for synod assemblies and Bishop's Conferences. He will be liaison to the Worship Ministry Team, to rostered leaders in word and service ministries, and to retired rostered leaders, in addition to the Leadership Development Ministry Team and Global Companion relationships. Pastor Peter Kuritz, pastor of Good Shepherd and St. John Churches in Wilkes-Barre, and dean of the Scranton/Wilkes- Barre Mission District, will join the synod staff as liaison to that mission district. He will continue to serve Good Shepherd and St. John, but step down as dean. Pastor Fred Crawford, retired and under contract at Christ Church in Mahanoy City, will join the synod staff as liaison to the Hazleton/ Lehighton Mission District. He will continue to serve Christ Church. Pastor Lori Kochanski, interim pastor at Salem and Holy Trinity Churches in Bethlehem, joins the synod as an associate of the bishop. She will be liaison to the Northern Lehigh Mission District, the Spirituality Ministry Team, (continued in the next column) Community Labyrinth In May of 2011 the Northeastern Pennsylvania Synod presented a series of synod-wide events under the broad heading of Do What Matters. The phrase, Doing What Matters to God, reminded the people of St. Paul, Tower City that God calls the church to be intentional about its purpose. In an attempt to step outside of the proverbial box, the congregation formed a Do What Matters Committee. They had a vision to construct a Labyrinth in the field adjacent to the church and to make it available to the whole community. The Labyrinth was completely funded by contributions made each Sunday and from local community organizations. In October 2014 the Labyrinth was ready to be walked. Bishop Zeiser and the Committee gathered on the 12th of October to dedicate this site. God s Work Our Hands describes beautifully the dedication and perseverance of the congregation and Committee in making this labyrinth a reality. The Labyrinth is for use by the public, and walks are free of charge. The labyrinth is open dawn to dusk each day. If you are in the area, come and experience the peace of walking a labyrinth; and meet God where you are. (continued from the previous column) the Interim Ministry Committee, and rostered leaders serving as chaplains at various facilities. She will continue to serve Salem and Holy Trinity Churches until their pastoral transition is complete. 9 Operation Sunshine!! Operation Sunshine is an outreach ministry of fellowship through travel provided by the Lehigh Mission District. This ministry began over 25 years ago by a group of forward thinkers who realized that as we age, our desire to be social and mobile does not diminish. But, our abilities and opportunities to do so may not be as available. Along came the idea of Operation Sunshine, which helps seniors fulfill their need to experience fellowship among others who are of like mind. The trips allow people to socialize, experience the arts, enjoy good food and feel safe and secure as they travel. Every effort is made to accommodate and assist those with physical difficulties so that they feel included and a part of a caring ministry. Laughter and good-natured kidding are always a part of the trips as the travelers reach out to each other in a loving, Christian manner. Information about current travel opportunities can be found in the monthly Lehigh Mission District Newsletter, the biannual Operation Sunshine Newsletter, joining our distribution list at LMDopsunshine@aol.com or through our new web site at which offers you the ability to register right on line. To register or obtain more detailed information about a trip, you may call the office at to speak to one of the volunteers on Mondays and Wednesdays from 11 AM to 3 PM.
