1 It s My Baby! That expression almost sounds like a song, doesn t it, but that s not what this article is about. No, that s what our dear St. Timothy member Martha Maletz kept saying over and over as she took a tour on January 4 through the beautiful new home of the Community Music School (CMS), which she and 3 other teachers started in Martha first took piano lessons at a community music school in Ohio. After she married Joseph Maletz they moved to Philadelphia where she taught piano lessons at the Settlement Music School. They later moved to Allentown where Martha discovered that there was a Epistle from St. Timothy Evangelical Lutheran Church February 2019 Volume 24, Issue 6 Transforming Lives by Connecting Communities need for a music school here. After much planning, fund raising, setting up guidelines, securing teachers and staff, and locating a suitable site, her baby the Community Music School of Lehigh Valley opened in 1981 in the Educational Building across the street from St. John s Lutheran Church on South 5th Street, Allentown. They had 7 faculty members and 38 enrolled students in piano and voice and provided $5,604 in scholarships and financial aid. In 2004, the music school needed more room, so it moved to the Fowler Education Wing on the second floor of Continued on page 3 see CMS St. Timothy Mission Statement Nurtured and sustained by God s love, we are called and inspired to share His love with our neighbor, to make God s story known, and to help our neighbors near and far so that all may experience God s love.

3 February 2019 Page 3 CMS (continued from page 1) Tuesday Prayer for Peace Miller Symphony Hall on North 6th Street. In addition to the downtown location, CMS expanded to offer Is a weekly opportunity to gather with lessons at several satellite locations, including brothers and sisters in faith for thirty in Center Valley at Penn State Lehigh Valley, minutes of reflection and prayer for peace Bethlehem, at Moravian Academy, and in Reading in hearts, in neighborhoods, in the world. at the GoggleWorks Center for the Arts, through Prayer begins at 7:00 A.M. the acquisition on August 1, 2015, of the former Community School of Music & the Arts in Reading. We gather in St. Timothy Church lounge. Things were going well, and yes, Martha s baby Please join us and invite others as well! was growing. When a high rise took away their parking lot next to Miller Symphony Hall, getting in and out became a real problem for parents and students. They needed a new home. Fortunately, the Mason organization at 16th and Hamilton Streets. (where the Scottish Rite Cathedral is located) wanted to sell their building directly across Hamilton Street where the Lehigh Valley Club formerly meet. This turned out to be the perfect location for the CMS, since many of their students come from Allen High School, Raub Middle School, Union Terrace Elementary School, and the surrounding neighborhoods. Today, CMS employs over 30 professional musicians who provide high-quality private and group instruction to over 300 students of all ages and in nearly every instrument and voice, as well as extensive, tuition-free outreach programs that bring music to hundreds more students in under-served, high-poverty schools. Martha is now retired, and on January 4, was thrilled and overjoyed to take a tour of the new facilities with its remodeled music rooms for kinder music, ensembles of all kinds for many instruments and group lessons, two baby grand pianos in one room for playing piano duets, a $100,000 grand piano the school received from the Reading Music School which was closing, and a large, bright auditorium for recitals and programs. Now that the music school is so visible with its new beautiful sign in front, street traffic is bringing people in asking for lessons. As Martha s guidelines stipulate, no one is denied musical training due to lack of funds, thanks to grants and donations from dedicated supporters and sponsors. She is very pleased and proud that the CMS is in such capable hands, that the present director, Jeff Reed, and his staff continue with the same passion and dedication that she had when it was first started. Thank you, Martha, for your foresight, determination, and hard work in setting up this legacy which will benefit many present and future musicians for generations. Yes, sir, that s your baby!
4 Page 4 Epistle from St. Timothy February 2019 The average adult heart is the size of a fist. The heart beats about 115,000 times each day. The heart pumps about 2,000 gallons of blood each day. The electrical system of the heart (cardiac conduction system) controls the heart rhythm. Most heart attacks occur on a Monday. Christmas day is the most common day of the year for a heart attack to occur. The human heart weighs less than one pound; a man s heart weighs about two ounces more than a woman s. A woman s heart beats a little faster than a man s. The heart beat sound is caused by the valves of the heart opening and closing. If the blood vessel system in the body was stretched out, it would extend over 60,000 miles. Laughing is good for the heart; it reduces stress and boosts the immune system. The heart is part of the body s circulatory system. It is composed of the chambers (atria and ventricles), the valve between the upper and lower chambers and the aortic valve, and the arteries and veins. The main function of the heart is to circulate oxygen filled blood throughout the body. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women. About 2,300 Americans die from heart disease each day (1 every 38 seconds). February is Heart Month YOUR HEART and HEART DISEASE February 1 is Wear Red for Heart Day FUN FACTS ABOUT the HEART: The key risk factors for heart disease are: Increased blood pressure Increased LDL cholesterol Smoking Additional risk factors are: Diabetes Being overweight/obesity Poor diet Physical inactivity Excessive use of alcohol Coronary Heart Disease can lead to a heart attack. 9 Volume 27, Issue 2 February 2019 SYNOD NEWS Northeastern Pennsylvania Synod, ELCA A Toy Drive in Schwarzwald Several years ago, Pastor Scott Staub had a dream that the Schwarzwald community could hold a Toy Drive for the children of the Exeter Area Food Pantry. The program began at Schwarzwald Lutheran Church; and now in its third year, it has become a truly community effort. This year the following churches participated in the Toy Drive: Schwarzwald Lutheran Church, Reformation Lutheran Church, Schwarzwald UCC, St. Lawrence UCC, Northstar UMC, and Bethany Lutheran Church. Financial support was provided by Thrivent Financial and Tompkin s VIST Bank. Wood-to-Wonderful provided their lovely handmade, wooden toys. The Arbor Inn, Effie s Charcoal Chef and Jake s of Mt. Penn provided collection sites, funding and cooking assistance. Boscov s Travel, A Perfect Secretary, Exeter Veterinary Hospital, Five Below, St. Lawrence Women s Club, Rotary of Mt. Penn/Exeter, Exeter Lions Club, the Exeter Girls Scouts and the Exeter Food Pantry collected toys, bought toys and provided many hardworking volunteers. There was absolutely no problem getting volunteers for this event! We had the hardest working, most joy-filled volunteers ever! Would you believe that we never had to ask for help with this project? The volunteers found us! We had set-up help, truck drivers, bakers, food servers, toy sorters, personal shoppers, tireless gift wrappers, friendly faces; and we even had a full crew at clean up time! The parents were very grateful and shared their thanks freely. We heard stories of disability, lost jobs, housing complications, sick children and even lost spouses. Most of the parents were relieved to have been invited to the event, expressing that they had no idea how they would have provided Christmas for their children without the Toy Give!
10 Synod Assembly 2019 New Theme and Logo Food Pantry Expansion in Dingmans Ferry The 2019 Synod Assembly will be held on June 1 at Genetti Red Roof Inn and Suites in Hazleton. The theme, Freed In Christ For a New Day, highlights that in Christ, there is a new creation (2 Cor. 5:17). The new logo symoolizes some of the underlying concepts and content to be explored at this Assembly: The FONT style is bold and clear, fresh and informal, reflecting a church that is open to all ages and clear in its belief and commitment to the gospel of Jesus Christ. The three colors are representative. (View the color edition online at nepasynod.org). BLUE - the skies and the waters that abundantly bless our Synod territory; and the waters of our baptism. GREEN - the hills, mountains, valleys, and the rich fields and farmlands that are our heritage and our legacy, bestowed on us to steward, share and pass on to those who come after. GOLD/YELLOW - the rising sun of the new day dawning in Jesus; the light of Christ; and even the fresh loaf of bread, the body of Christ broken for us. The FISH is the earliest symbol of Christ and his first followers, and connects to his feeding of the 5,000 and his call for us to fish for people. Holy Trinity in Dingmans Ferry has been operating a food pantry for 30 years. In recent times, as the number of families coming to receive supplemental food has grown, Holy Trinity has partnered with state and local government, local businesses, the Delaware Valley School District, and the community to purchase and collect food to distribute. Barbara Hupfer, the Holy Trinity Lay Assistant, coordinates the pantry, ordering food, recruiting and training volunteers and scheduling and meeting with food pantry recipients. The pantry is open 5 days a week. In recent years the need for additional space for storage, freezers and distribution of food became critical. The congregation was blessed by a $100,000 gift from a parishioner who volunteers in the pantry and a grant from the Land Share Act of Pennsylvania for $50,000 to pay for the 980 square foot addition onto the church. Bishop Zeiser came to preside over the dedication of the new pantry. He spoke about recognizing the mission of God being shared in the church and the community, including the county and local elected officials who were present. The congregation is filled with joy over this growing ministry that daily serves people in need. Each month, over 150 families are given supplemental food including, cereal, canned goods, meat, vegetables and a variety of staples. The congregation is blessed by being a blessing. 12 LOVE CHANGES THINGS A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this (you) will know that you are my disciples John 13: Even as we began the new year, I had the privilege of encountering several experiences that bore testimony to the fact that people are responding actively to this commandment and that their lives are being very positively affected. It is my hope that this sharing will serve as an inspiration as we commence another year of mission and ministry. My first experience involved providing support to a fellow Lutheran who is in need of daily assistance as a result of surgery which was performed early in December. I was privileged to become part of a team which has been providing this service. And I was particularly moved by a comment from one of the members of the team who indicated that one of his commitments when he recently retired was to see that he extended himself in love at least once a day in his retired life. I had never encountered such a commitment previously, but it certainly resulted in some serious reflections. It is obvious that this individual does not call attention to this special commitment as he reaches out to help. But it is clear that he is experiencing special meaning in his life as a result. Then there was the privilege of reading the article regarding Momoh Freeman in the January issue of Living Lutheran. Admittedly it is not the first such experience about which I have learned, but it was particularly moving in this season of the year and as I contemplated what I wanted to share by means of this article. If you haven t read this brief article, I encourage you to do so. Momoh was born and raised in Liberia during its civil war. Obviously, life was very difficult under those circumstances, but, despite this, he found himself very attracted to the piano and set about learning to play it. He walked miles to a neighboring village to practice the closest piano. And as he became reasonably skilled, he began playing in places where he would receive contributions for his offering. This helped provide food for him and his family in the refugee camp. Now in America he is the organist, pianist and choir director at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Almelund, Minnesota. And the love he extends through his contributions is obviously being rewarded with special meanings in his own life. And I have also learned recently of an adult Sunday School class that is reaching out to provide special support to the Sixth Street Shelter in Allentown. They have literally adopted one of the apartments in this complex and have agreed to meet the needs of keeping it functioning. Recently this has even led to a request for support to help in repairing some of the equipment in this facility. The spirit of their ask reveals that they are sensing a spirit of love in response to their contribution. I encourage you to think on these things as we begin a new year.
