I have always felt we had very generous parishioners here, and this confirmed it. If not you, then who Our Mission: St. Mary s by the Sea, a Catholic community of faith, hope, and love, journeying together in the spirit of stewardship, unity, and charity, embracing all in Christ under the mantle of Our Lady.
2 St. Mary s by the Sea Catholic Church Reflections of the Week Pennies From Heaven The Way to the Kingdom The disciples were trying to be helpful. In the Temple of Jerusalem, only priests could enter the Holy of Holies, the men could enter the sanctuary, while women and children only got into the vestibule. So the disciples knew that children never approached the Rabbis. To show their respect for Jesus, they tried to turn the children away. But Jesus saw this as a chance to teach the disciples about the kingdom. As they tried to send the children back to their parents, Jesus changes the rules. He invites the kids to come to Him and even makes an example of them: Let the children come to me... for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. His teachings always emphasized humility and trust, and he held up these children as the best examples. Whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it. So what do we learn from this? Children don't make themselves look important. They haven't learned to brag about their accomplishments, or how to offer a bribe to get what they want. They simply accept what is given to them. In a culture where we are expected to make a good impression, where we compete to get scholarships and jobs, we may be more like the disciples than we think. A young man falling in love may be tempted to show what a great athlete he is, or how he plans to get a high paying job after graduation. Yet all he really needs to do is tell the girl that he loves her. We cannot make ourselves look important to God; we can't bribe Him with good works or change His mind with empty promises to avoid sin. We can, however, be sorry for our sins, and tell Him we love Him, and ask for help with our weaknesses instead. Children are by nature also curious and humble; they know that they are small and depend on their parents for everything. Likewise, we must be humble and recognize that we are small before God and depend on God for everything in our lives that is good. To have this attitude is to look for the kingdom of God and to be ready to enter it. And, like the children, we will be touched and blessed by Jesus and welcomed into his arms. Today Sunday, October 7th, is the beginning of our Diocese s 24th annual Pennies from Heaven Campaign. 3 Twenty-Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time The Creation of Life In our ability to create life, we have been given the opportunity to participate with the Creator (that s why it s called procreation). Human life is the greatest good that God has given us. It is so valuable that God Himself came to earth in human form so that Jesus could show us our worth and die for our salvation. Every human life has limitless value regardless of its qualities, circumstances, abilities, dependency on others, achievements or failings. In God s eyes, every person is perfect, from the moment of conception and every moment afterwards. In the U.S. alone, one in three women will experience abortion in her lifetime, which means that just about 1 million abortions are performed every year. The number of lives lost is staggering, but it s important to understand what we re really dealing with here. A few generations ago, science was not as advanced as it is today, and ultrasound images did not exist. It was possible for people to truly believe that an unborn baby was nothing but a mass of cells. Today, we know differently. We not only have ultrasound, but also high definition video from inside the uterus that shows the embryologic and fetal development at all stages. We know exactly that a baby s heart starts beating about 6 weeks after conception, when the baby is the size of a sesame seed. During the first trimester (first 13 weeks), approximately 90% or all abortions occur. Because we know so much about how babies grow and develop in the womb, it s reasonable to wonder why abortion is still legal at all. If fetuses are unborn humans with working organs, central nervous systems, and the ability to feel and dream, why aren t they protected like all born human beings? This a complex question with a relatively simple answer. Our society doesn t believe that human life is inherently sacred and deserving of protection. Many people believe that the life of the woman is more important, and in doing so, try not to think about what happens to the baby. Women who choose abortion do so because they are desperate. Often, they are alone. But it is important for them to remember that they are not alone. There are communities of people around the world, in pregnancy clinics and adoptions centers, who want to provide them with support and resources, not only during their pregnancy, but beyond. As Christians, we know there is an additional level of support - God the Father who gave life to the woman has also given life to her child and has an amazing plan for both of them, though she may not see it yet. Imagine what it feels like to be the one person in the world to decide whether an unborn child lives or dies. What an immense burden! Who are any of us to have that kind of responsibility over the life of someone else? You can t decide that someone you know is bothering you, inhibiting you from doing your best in life, and ask someone to kill them. Yet, that is the power that we give to women when abortion is legal. -(adapted) Archdiocese of Los Angeles Respect Life Week Aurora Aragón Natlie Arellano Bette Barilla Cary Benoit Kathi Britton Hugh Cahil Colleen Campbell Earline Campbell Peggy Carrasco Rodrigo Castro Samuel Chavez George Christa Rosemarie Clouse Dan Derieg Helen Donnelly Ann Erwin Glen Evans Al Griego Nathan Hamby Learning Life s Lessons Sooner or later, a man/woman discovers that life is a mixture of good days and bad, victory and defeat, give and take. They learn that it doesn t pay to be a sensitive soul; that they should let some things go over their head, like water off a ducks back. He learns that he who loses his temper loses out. He learns that carrying a chip on his shoulder is the easiest way to get back into a fight. He learns that buck-passing always turns out to be a boomerang, and that it never pays. He learns that getting along with folks depends about 98% on his own behavior. 4 321 10th Street, Huntington Beach, Ca Rosary - Coast to Coast Join thousands across the country as we pray the Rosary from Coast to Coast for our nation. October 7 th at 1:00pm Huntington State Beach, Tower 11 Please arrive by 12:30pm as they will begin praying promptly at 1:00pm so that the timing aligns with all other time zones across the nation. For further information, please go to Stewardship Corner What is a Steward? And what is the purpose of a Stewardship Committee at church? Originally, the Stewardship Committee were those who just put on events and charity opportunities in an inviting and friendly atmosphere for SMBTS. BUT this was the first phase (the sharing of our time and treasures) purposely done to unite us in a common goal all the while getting to know one another outside of the weekly Masses. The next phase was to grow this foundation by recognizing that bigger than the first phase was acknowledging our own talents and utilizing them for the Glory of God who gave us each a special gift to share. Tying all this together is the greatest phase by actually using everything: our Time, Talents, and Treasures, with emphasis on our common Catholic FAITH, and the bond of LOVE that is obviously spreading throughout our Cozy Chapel. So. a Steward is a fellow parishioner who shares his Faith, his Time, Talents, and Treasures, and gives back to God through his actions right here! If YOU D like to become a Steward, we d love to have you join us every third Friday of the month at 7:00pm for a one-hour meeting and maybe break the ice by breaking bread together; joining us beforehand at 6:00pm for a potluck dinner? Then maybe we ll help you find YOUR OWN gift to share? May God continue to bless us in all we do in His name. AMEN What is a Christian steward? One who receives God s gifts gratefully, cherishes and tends them in a responsible and accountable manner, shares them in justice and love with others, and returns them with increase to the Lord. (American Bishops Pastoral Letter).
