Happy Easter! The Great Fifty Days of Easter begin at Sundown Easter Eve, and continue through the Day of Pentecost. Ascension Day is the fortieth day of Easter. After Jesus rose from the dead, he walked on this earth, teaching his disciples for 40 days. On the fortieth day after the resurrection, Jesus ascended into heaven (Acts 1:1-11). We celebrate Ascension Sunday on the Sunday after Ascension Day. The Sunday after Ascension Sunday is the Day of Pentecost. During these Great Fifty Days of Easter, we focus on Christ s resurrection and ascension. We often read from the book of Acts during this season, and learn about the Acts of the Apostles. What better way to witness to God s love than through acts of service? When we set out to do an action for the good of others, and it is done in the right spirit, a change occurs in our spirit. Many times people start out on mission trips believing that they are going to help others, but then come back saying they were the ones who were helped. Service is a way of living. Paul wrote in Galatians 6:2, Bear one another s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ. John Wesley instructed people to serve the poor personally, for the benefit of their own souls. As a Spiritual Discipline, we can begin each day with the following prayer, Lord Jesus, show me someone I can serve today. It will make a difference in your life. May God bless you all with opportunities to serve others throughout these Great Fifty Days of Easter. Rev. Joe Shoop (Scripture Readings for April found on page 4)

2 P A G E 2 April Youth Happenings April 1 st Easter Sunday No Youth Group Happy Easter!! April 8 th Bible study w/kim Payne April 14 th Church Yard Sale Bethel Youth Ministry On March 16 th 18 th our middle school age youth attended the Journey weekend retreat. What is Journey? JOURNEY middle school weekend is a ministry of the Jeremiah Project which has been offering weekend retreats for middle school students (6-8 graders) since It is held at Rockbridge Alum Springs in Goshen, VA. The weekend is specifically designed to encourage and challenge our middle school students in their walk with Christ during these most critical years of faith development in the life of a student. During their stay, they had four General Sessions. Each session included some comedy and games, great Christian music by Relinquish, prayer, and a Christian speaker, Brooklyn Lyndsey. The youth also had a choice of two out of 6 breakout talks on Saturday. Additionally, they had free time Saturday afternoon, to enjoy the beautiful surroundings and activities at Rockledge. These activities were basketball, Frisbee golf, a rock climbing wall, a rope obstacle course with a zipline at the end, a giant three-person chair swing, a slide, hi-five climbing pole, and much more. Journey has been their favorite activity each year, and it is not hard to understand why. The youth and chaperones come away inspired by God s word, feel a deeper commitment to loving our Lord God, and become more bonded with each other as friends in Christ. 4 P A G E 4 The next Mission Team Meeting will be on Monday, April 23rd at 5 p.m. Bethel is on a Mission April's Communion Offering will be going to a local outreach organization called Project Mend-A-House. Project Mend-A-House works with the Area Agency on Aging, Social Services agencies, and other non-profit organizations and groups to reach out to low-income Prince William County and greater Manassas residents in need of help. Your donations will help provide home repairs to low-income seniors, veterans, and people with disabilities at no cost to them. A gift of time and talent makes a difference too. If you would like more info see: Society of St. Stephen is continually in need of food for our food pantry, which helps local families in need. Cereals, and canned pasta meals are the most requested items, but boxed milk, canned meats, fruit, veggies, non-perishable food items are always needed. Items can be dropped off during office hours (9-3 M-F), or by the cabinet in the narthex, any Sunday. Save the date The BUMMs and the Mission Outreach Team will be co-hosting a Dinner and a Movie night on Saturday, May 12th, at 6 pm. We want to be able to spend some time together in fellowship, while raising money for our Rise Against Hunger campaign held on September 29th. Our goal is to raise at least enough funds for 20,000 meals again this year, and even more water filtration systems than last year. Hope you and your family will join us. More details to come. When you see some sales or clearances, keep in mind we will be doing our annual Kits for Conference drive in May. It's always difficult to find baby sized jackets, sweaters, and sweatshirts in May and June, for the baby layette kits. So if you see any, (sizes 3 mos.-24 mos.) and you'd like to donate, please grab them. We will minimally be doing the health kits, and the sewing kits. The next Mission Team Meeting will be on Monday, April 23rd, at 5 p.m. We will plan the next Lord's Table dinner coming up Thursday, May 3rd at St. Paul UMC, the movie night, and other upcoming mission projects. 6 P A G E 6 Bethel United Methodist Women Hello ladies, Thank you so much to those of you that helped with the Faithweaver Friends dinners we sponsored during this session. The kids that participated, and their families, truly enjoyed it. Your help was also greatly appreciated during the several funeral receptions that we have recently helped with. It brought great comfort to those who have experienced a loss, to be able to celebrate their loved ones lives with their families and friends all around them. Save the date, Saturday May 5th, from 2-4 pm. Join us for the Annual UMW Tea Party! Be sure to save the date, Saturday, May 5th, from 2-4 p.m. so that you can join us at Bethel for the Annual UMW Tea Party. Tickets will be on sale during the month of April. You can reserve individual tickets or even reserve a whole table. Sheri, with the help of her Tea Party Crew, will certainly once again try to outdo herself and provide a wonderful theme and event. For a few years now, the ladies of the church have come together with their kids, grandkids, friends, and family to enjoy an afternoon of tea and other drinks, goodies, games, and dressing up in a fun or pretty outfit, and hat. The very best part is the wonderful fellowship we have in the House on the Corner. Typically, its ladies only, but, if they d like to attend, the guys are certainly welcome. Hope you will be able to join us this year! When we can t find Easter Easter is the most joyous Christian holy day... except when it s not. What do we do when our mood isn t what we think it should be? The kids are sugared up, we re juggling family gatherings (and maybe conflicts), our everyday challenges remain, and festive hymns however rousing fail to lift our spirits. We wonder, What s wrong with me, that I can t seem to find Easter? Been there, done that. And it s okay. You re okay. Jesus resurrection doesn t scoop us out of our troubles, but the death-defying Christ walks through them beside us, on our own Emmaus road (Luke 24). We aren t alone. When we can t find Easter, Easter somehow finds us if not on this designated Sunday, perhaps two days from now, or next week or mid-may. Watch for it; keep your heart open. Christ is risen indeed and you shall be too. -Heidi Mann B E T H E L B E L L

8 P A G E 8 Lay Servant Ministries Servant leadership turns the power Have you talked about Servanthood and Servant Leadership in your church? I have been in many conversations about being a Servant of Jesus Christ with a lot of my friends. To help me understand and explain to others I pulled together some information which I would like to share with you. I also want to share information about our Lay Servant Ministries Programs and training. in order to better serve others, not to increase their own power. You can do acts of service and still not be a servant if your motivations are rooted in selfish ambition, if your intended outcome is recognition, and if your ultimate purpose is to benefit yourself in some pyramid upside down; instead of the people working to serve the leader, the leader exists to serve the people. Servant is defined as: One that serves. Servant leadership is a leadership philosophy. Traditional leadership generally involves the exercise of power by one at the top of the pyramid. By comparison, the servantleader shares power, puts the needs of others first and helps people develop and perform as highly as possible. Servant leadership turns the power pyramid upside down; instead of the people working to serve the leader, the leader exists to serve the people. When leaders shift their mindset and serve first, they unlock purpose and ingenuity in those around them, resulting in higher performance and engaged, fulfilled employees.- What Is Servant Leadership -Servant Leadership Institute. At heart, the individual is a servant first, making the conscious decision to lead way. True servanthood begins with selflessness, maintains humility throughout, and ultimately seeks the good of others which requires the right heart attitude. So much of the attitude of Jesus began with a choice a choice to make himself nothing, take on the nature of a servant, humble himself and become obedient. Questions we should ask ourselves? Do you have the right heart? Are you using your God given Gifts to Serve HIM? Do you say, I love Jesus and am at my core His servant! We need to be people dedicated to our Master s Word, knowing that it is the Master s training manual for godly B E T H E L B E L L

9 living and service: All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 Do you continually study Gods Training Manual? Lay Servant Ministries Core is: Leading, Communication and Caring. We help people to grow in those three tenants. To Continue to Be recognized as a Certified Lay Servant you must continue your training, and serve at the Local, District, or Conference Level. If you just want the training and not become a Certified Lay Servant all are welcome. We have courses in each of our tenants and others which help you grow in your Journey with Jesus Christ. Who SHOULD take Lay Servant Courses; Anyone who desires knowledge of the United Methodist Church and its beliefs, policies, and ministries. Everyone who seeks leadership, assistance, and support to the program emphases of the church or other United Methodist ministry. Anyone that lead meetings for prayer, training, study, and discussion when requested by the pastor, district superintendent, or committee on lay servant ministries. Anyone that conduct, or assist in conducting, services of worship, preach the Word, or give addresses when requested by the pastor, district superintendent, or committee on Lay Servant Ministries. This also applies when you are asked outside of the church to lead a worship or prayer service. Everyone that works on committees and teams that provide congregational and community leadership or foster caring ministries. P A G E 9 Anyone that assist in the distribution of the elements of Holy Communion upon request by a pastor. Anyone who does hospital and home visits. Everyone has God given gifts we have a course to inform you what they are and how to use them in your church community. All that teach the Scriptures, doctrine, organization, and ministries of The United Methodist Church. We have scheduled courses twice a year in the Bi-District Spring and Fall. The Conference does a training in the Spring. The other districts also have courses that they post as scheduled. Arlington and Alexandria District has those courses listed on the Novaumc.org website under the Lay Servant Ministries Training Section from the drop down. All the other courses are on the conference website vaumc.org under Lay leadership then Lay Servant Ministries. Our next Bi-District Training is: April 27th and 28th at Herndon UMC. All are welcome We look forward to seeing you at one of our training events.
