Upcoming weeks start November 11, 2018 and February 10, Thank you to volunteers from our last rotation. Guests were very appreciative of your support, especially for the special food requests and for loving care of their children. Together, we provide needed comfort and safety for families in a crisis. Can you make a difference with local families? Without volunteers, this mission is not successful. Please consider joining Third Church s RAIHN team. Contact Lou Loggi (louis.loggi@gmail. com) today to learn how you can help. SAVE THE DATE: SATURDAY, OCTOBER 20, 2018 Dinner with friends! What could be better? Meals with a Meaning is back! Aside from the thousands of dollars this event raises to support our church budget, it also gives members a chance to socialize in a more meaningful way with one another. Previous host Margaret Lindsey expressed her dinner group s desire to have more shared experiences with Third Church members in people s homes with personal fellowship and good food, like Meals With a Meaning, over a large church room with metal chairs. Their evening ended with plans to meet again in a home setting. Host Hope Herting learned from one of her guests that they had been meeting for fellowship and book discussions with a former MWM dinner they had attended several years earlier. These are just a few examples of the connections made when people gather for this event. We are looking for hosts who are creative and fun. That doesn t mean a meal equal to the menu of a five-star restaurant (although if that s how you like to entertain, please do!), but it does mean having fun getting creative. In the past, menus have included ethnic fare, tapas and even one home s own version of a popular BBQ joint. Hosts determine the size of their own group, whether it s 4 or 40. We are looking for a few hosts who may be interested in family-friendly settings that include children and those willing to host a luncheon or tea, for those uncomfortable with driving at night. You can t have a dinner party without the guests! So if hosting isn t your thing, sign up to attend and we will match you with a host. To host OR attend, contact Beth Aten at: bethfa@rochester.rr.com or Hope Herting at: mhherting@yahoo.com. EAGR Needs Your Support The East Avenue Grocery Run supports all the costs of the Third Church food ministry as well as making donations to 16 area food pantries. This year we have lost several corporate sponsors. We are seeking connections with local companies. If you can open a door or make an connection for us, please reach out to Kerrie Merz (kmerz1@rochester.rr.com) or Susan Fox (swichmanfox@gmail.com). ThirdPresbyterian.org 3

You have been a warm and welcoming congregation, compassionate and creative community builders, enthusiastic and effective agents of the common good, ardent and persistent advocates. In short, you rock! In these last days, you have shared well wishes and prayers, memories and thanks, and a generous parting gift which took me by surprise. My heart is full. Now, as the final goodbyes are said, the next part of leavetaking begins, which I ve tried to capture in the covenant below: With a posture of grace, understanding, and trust in the guidance of the Holy Spirit, I, Martha Langford, covenant to hold Third Church and its congregants in prayer, to refrain from intentional interaction through , social media, or by phone; to exercise boundaries that will create space in which a new pastoral ministry can be planted. I ask that the members of Third Church hold me in prayer during this time of transition, refer questions and pastoral needs to other pastors and staff members, allow space to process the end of this pastoral relationship, prepare to welcome and embrace new pastoral leadership as the Spirit directs. The past ten years have provided an incredible opportunity for ministry and I am grateful for them and for each and every one of you. May God bless you and keep you, Martha Langford 4 The Messenger

6 Field of Dreams Day! The fourth Field of Dreams event on Friday, June 8 - Saturday, June 9 was the most successful yet. 58 young men, a variety of law enforcement agencies, RCSD personnel, Wegman s and many more joined together for a sleepover at Frontier Field after Friday s game. Friday night, one of the boys threw out the first pitch. Monroe County Executive Cheryl Dinolfo presented David Tennant, Moses Robinson and Dale Maddock with a proclamation for Field of Dreams Day! After breakfast Saturday morning the boys had opportunities to work with a Wegman s chef and law enforcement in different activities. The overnight closed with a game of quickball! Thank you Ike! We extend our deep appreciation to Ike Neilson, who has been the Third Church tutoring coordinator at Pinnacle School #35 for the past ten years, and a volunteer tutor for years before that. Ike and his family are planning a move to South Carolina, and therefore he is leaving this position at the end of this school year. Ike has been a passionate advocate for and mentor to the children at School #35, and an all-star tutor coordinator. His service has been so notable that after being nominated by the school s principal and vice principal, in April he received one of only 12 Volunteer Service Awards from the Rochester City School District. We wish Ike, Missy and their family all the best and Godspeed in their new adventures! RCSD Recognizes Third Church members! In April, two Third Church members were among a group of only twelve honored by the Rochester City School District with 2018 Volunteer Service Awards. Jack Salzer was recognized for his 30 years of volunteer work with immigrant and refugee students at Rochester International School. Ike Neilson was recognized for his tutoring work at Pinnacle School #35. Congratulations to both Jack and Ike! Congratulations Jack and Ike! 6 The Messenger

For two Sundays in August, interested singers, 7 th grade through adult, are invited to come early and rehearse an anthem or two to sing in worship that day! On Sunday August 19, and Sunday August 26, we ll meet at 9:00am in the (air conditioned!) Choir Room, and after a brief rehearsal in the Sanctuary, we ll be ready to sing for worship. No robes, so dress with that in mind, and come join us! A great way to try out a choir experience, or for regular singers to get their voices in shape for the Fall season! Peter DuBois (PDuBois@ thirdpresbyterian.org) and Mary Ann Rutkowski (mrutkowski@ thirdpresbyterian.org) are coordinating this effort. Contact them for more information. An Enduring Legacy in Glass Stained Glass Month was a resounding success! Thanks to the generosity of over 50 members, we exceeded our goal to raise $10,000 in this first year of The James P. Chisholm Memorial Stained Glass Restoration Fund. The Chisholm Fund supports the repair and preservation of Third Church s beautiful sanctuary windows, and is dedicated to the memory of Jim Chisholm, a long-term member of the church who offered so much to the care of our facility as well as to the life of our congregation. We will use the funds to restore Nativity, a window designed and manufactured by Willet Studios in Philadelphia in Henry Willet and his descendants were traditionalists, seeking to recreate medieval European aesthetics in an American context. The window s small panes of bold, jeweltoned color and schematic composition exemplify this neo-gothic style. Third Church is fortunate to be the custodian of historically significant windows like this one, and The Chisholm Fund has helped to ensure it will be preserved for generations to come. Thank you for your support!
