2 Third Voice Dear Friends, As I am sure you remember, last month we feted retiring officers, those Elders, Deacons and Trustees whose terms had expired. We remain grateful for their service and leadership, and their willingness to share their gifts in such an important way. Now we re ready to welcome a new set of officers on board. And what a group! Some are long time members while some have joined more recently. They represent a wide range of gifts and experiences and perspectives. What they share in common is a commitment to serve and gifts to share. One of our retiring elders offered this reflection about her experience: I ve learned that Third Presbyterian Church is involved in numerous activities from Christian education to meals for those in need to denominational responsibilities to music which is shared around the world... and more. She is right, and this group of leaders will be sharing their time and energy and gifts to keep that mission going. 3 Milestones Lifting Up Our Joys Birth For the birth of Cecile Kluge to John and Emily Kluge and greatgrandparents David and Beverly Kluge on March 5 Praying for the Bereaved For the family of Sally Gillan who died on April 7 For Kathryn and William Thomas on the death of Kathryn s mother Evelyn Swartz in late April For Jane and Mark Carden on the death of sister-in-law Ann Carden on May 4 For David and Mary Evans on the death of Mary s sister Ginger McPhail on May 7 New Food Cupboard Volunteers Needed for Summer and Fall Dinner With Friends? What Could Be Better! Save the date: Saturday, October 21, 2017 Meals with a Meaning is back! Aside from the thousands of dollars this event raises to support our church budget, it also gives members a chance to socialize in a more meaningful way with one another. Previous host Sarah Boyce reminisces, When Tim and I first learned about the Meals with a Meaning concept, we immediately saw two opportunities. First, what a great way for us to get to know fellow members better, and second, what a great way to introduce new families to one another! The fundraising aspect was just a bonus. The picture we took at our first MWM pops up on Facebook periodically and makes us feel grateful for this wonderful congregation and the special connection we have with those who attended. Guests Nancy and Paul Gongloff describe it this way, It s not hit-and-run, fast food nation, but Jesus-style table fellowship with storytelling, laughter, poignant listening and border crossings into others rich life experiences. Each Meals with a Meaning group includes a wonderful and spirited cast of characters, and strangers have become friends. Don t be shy! We are looking for hosts who are creative and fun. That doesn t mean a meal equal to the menu of a fivestar restaurant (although if that s how you like to entertain, please do!), but it does mean having fun getting creative. In the past, menus have included ethnic fare, tapas and even one house s own version of a popular BBQ joint. You can t have a dinner party without the guests! So if hosting isn t your thing, sign up to attend and we will match you with a host. To host OR attend, contact Beth Aten at: bethfa@rochester.rr.com or Hope Herting at: mhherting@yahoo.com. Look for our table at The Big Lunch on June 11 after worship. Have you thought that you might want to volunteer on a four-person Food Cupboard Team? Well, here s your chance! As team members leave for vacations during the summer, several new volunteers are needed to substitute on Monday or Thursday teams during July, August and into September. The Food Cupboard operates each Monday and Thursday morning from 8:45-11:45am except on holidays. Team members pack grocery bags, register guests, and help with the Choice Table where guests choose extra items such as milk, bread, meat and produce. Younger post-retirement volunteers are especially welcome. Kids from middle and high school are welcome to volunteer with parents or grandparents. Training will be provided, and you will work with experienced volunteers. If you are interested or just would like to talk further about this opportunity to make a difference in the lives of folks who live in the church area, please call Carol Coons ( , carolycoons@ gmail.com) or Kay Ramsay ( , kramsay80@yahoo.com). 4 Adult Spiritual Formation: Sunday Seminar: 9:30am, Johnston Hall June 4 and 11 The Whole Megillah: The Surprising Book of Ruth led by Jim Stewart, Spiritual Formation Committee We will continue our exploration of the Jewish interpretive tradition with an in-depth reading and discussion over two weeks of the Scroll (or Megillah) of Ruth. Only four chapters a scant 85 verses long, this ancient story carries an amazingly contemporary message. The book is about two women. The first is Naomi, an Israelite, who is feeling deeply bitter and abandoned in the wake of the death of her husband and two sons. The other is Ruth, a childless widow and Naomi s daughter-in-law. She proves to be a surprising model of chessed or loving-kindness and a model of faithfulness to the God of Israel. Rabbi Jonathan Sacks comments on the power of this story. These two major characters were divided by ethnicity Moabites and Israelites were supposed to be mortal enemies. Yet in the end, the book of Ruth is about redemption, about how simple gestures can transcend deep differences. Not coincidentally, Ruth shows up in the Hebrew Bible in the family tree of the great King David and in the Gospel of Matthew as a forebear of Jesus of Nazareth! Summer Sundays at 9:00am Genesis A Story of Beginnings In Hebrew, the Book of Genesis begins with the words B reishit, often translated in English In the beginning but can also be rendered At first or even When in a beginning Genesis is a story of many beginnings, including several taps on the restart button! This series will feature readings of familiar Genesis texts, brief reflections by wise biblical commentators from the Christian and Jewish traditions, and open discussion about how these stories of beginnings relate to our lives. This study does not require special knowledge of the Bible, and all are welcome to come as they are able over the busy summer season. June 18 The Many Ways of Reading Genesis: An Introduction Led by Jim Stewart June 25 A Creation Hymn of Praise: Genesis 1:1-2:4a Summer of the Century During the summer, our Thursdays will include a mid-week discussion group that meets at noon. Led by Jim Stewart, Paul Gongloff, and Mary Cowden, discussions will center on articles drawn from The Christian Century. Bring your lunch and your experience as the group takes on the following articles: June 15 Road: Essays by readers led by Paul Gongloff June 22 The poor we will always have with us? led by John Wilkinson June 29 Who decides what my body means? led by Mary Cowden Thursday Voices: 12:00noon, Johnston Hall In our final weeks of Voices during this program year, we will explore issues around eviction through the work of Matthew Desmond and his article from The New Yorker, Forced Out. June 1: Part 1 of Forced Out led by: John Wilkinson June 8: Part 2 of Forced Out led by: Ernest Krug On June 11, 2017, we will receive the Pentecost Offering. One of four PC(USA) special offerings, the Pentecost Offering helps the church encourage, develop, and support its young people, and also address the needs of at-risk children. 40% of the Pentecost offering will be retained by our own congregation to make an impact in the lives of young people within our own community. The remaining 60% is used to support ministries of the Presbyterian Mission Agency that provide positive, faithfilled mentorship, experiences, and service to support children, youth, and young adults. These ministries include Young Adult Volunteers, ministries with youth that help them build the foundations of their faith, and ministries for Children At-Risk, including the Educate a Child, Transform the World national initiative that seeks to strengthen early education, provide safe haven, and reduce the dropout rate of at-risk children and adolescents. Please share gladly and give generously. 4 The Messenger

Frohman, Pastor Emeritus To reach any of our staff, call Third Presbyterian Church at (585) Caroline Robinson in International Competition Assistant Organist Caroline Robinson has recently been chosen as one of sixteen young organists from around the world to compete at the 29 th St. Albans International Organ Festival in St. Albans, England, this summer. This Festival is one of the oldest and most prestigious international organ competitions, and Caroline holds the distinction of being the only American chosen to participate among the field of sixteen competitors this year. The Festival is centered around the St. Albans Abbey, and will take place July The competition comprises six rounds on five different organs in and around St. Albans, with the final round including a concerto performance with orchestra for the remaining competitors. Some of the repertoire for each round is specified ahead of time, but some is left to the choice of the competitors. Caroline will offer a preview recital of some of the repertoire for the various rounds of the competition for us at Third Church on Thursday, June 29 from 7:30-9:00pm! All are invited to attend this great program to give Caroline a chance to share with us some of the wonderful music she ll be performing in the competition and for us to offer our strong support as she prepares. photo credit: Sharon Torello The recital will include a sampling of music from each round of the competition, including works of Johann Sebastian Bach, Olivier Messiaen s ethereal Alleluias sereins d une âme qui désire le ciel, and the dramatic Te Deum by Jeanne Demessieux, among other works. The program is free and open to all. Those who are able to attend will also have an opportunity to help support Caroline s effort financially, as the expenses for the competition and festival are substantial. Mark your calendar now, and plan to attend, as we give Caroline an enthusiastic sendoff! Thank you Troop 31 When Troop 31 met on April 24 they spent much of their time cleaning up part of the Third Church grounds. About 20 Scouts raked leaves and debris in the lawn bordering the Meigs Street parking lot, where their Christmas trees were placed during last December s tree sale. They also cleaned up the playground area and the hedges bordering the playground on Arnold Park. Third Church has sponsored Troop 31 for more than 100 years! We appreciate the work the Scouts did to beautify the outside of Third Church.
