1 What did God do to help us? God chose the people of Israel to make a new beginning. They received God s covenant, and prepared the way for Jesus to come as our Savior. What is the covenant? The covenant is an everlasting agreement between God and Israel. What is in this agreement? When God called Abraham and Sarah, God promised to bless their family, which was later called Israel. Through the people of Israel, God vowed to bless all the peoples of the earth. God promised to be Israel s God, and they promised to be God s people. God vowed to love Israel and to be their hope forever, and Israel vowed to worship and serve only God. How did God keep this covenant? God led Israel out of slavery in Egypt, gave them the Ten Commandments through Moses, and brought them into the land that God had promised. A WORD ABOUT THIS CHURCH Child Care is available in the Education Building for infants and toddlers to age three. Church School is available for children, preschool through sixth grade, during the 10:45am worship service. Children should report to the Education Building before the service at 10:40am this week. Children in Kindergarten and older will return to the sanctuary following the sermon to be present for the Sacrament of Communion. Coffee Hour follows the worship service. As we prepare to offer ourselves in praise and adoration of God, it is important that we step back from our preoccupations and focus our thoughts on God. AFFIRMATION of FAITH Belonging to God: A First Catechism Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) Who are you? I am a child of God. What does it mean to be a child of God? That I belong to God, who loves me. What is a sacrament? A sacrament is a special act of Christian worship which uses visible signs to present God s grace for us in Jesus Christ. We believe that two sacraments were given by Jesus: baptism and the Lord s Supper. What is the Lord s Supper? In the Lord s Supper I am fed at the table of God s family. Through the bread that I eat and the cup that I drink, the Lord offers me his body and blood. He renews my faith, and gives me the gift of eternal life. As I remember that he died for all, and therefore also for me, I feed on him in my heart by faith with thanksgiving. Amen. Third Church s discretionary portion of the Peace and Global Witness Offering will support the work of Doctors Without Borders who have been much in the news to help contain Ebola outbreaks in Africa and also works in 70 countries around the world. Much of their work calls for rapid response, but they also provide longer-term help, tackling health crises and supporting people unable to access health care. Exploring Membership at Third Church: The Exploring Membership Dinner on October 12 is a time to meet members, other newcomers and staff and an opportunity to share your story, hear from others about the journeys that brought us here, and explore ways to connect with the people here. Following the dinner, those who wish to become members of Third Church can choose to attend one of two New Member Gatherings: immediately following the dinner from 7:30 to 9:00pm or from 8:30 to 10:00am on Sunday, October 19. 9 About Today s Organ Music Le Banquet Céleste, written by Olivier Messiaen in 1928, depicts a mystical vision of Holy Communion as a heavenly banquet. Messiaen was one of the most original of the 20 th century French organist-composers. A devout Roman Catholic, his compositions were frequently on religious, even mystical themes evoking images of heaven and creating the sense of a suspension of time. As postlude, Johann Sebastian Bach s prelude on the chorale, Wir glauben all an einen Gott presents a sturdy affirmation of our belief in one God. An Invitation to Give: Stewardship 2015 While stewardship is a year round conversation, the focused Third Church stewardship effort begins in October, culminating with Stewardship Sunday on November 16. Our theme, An Invitation to Give, connects with our Year of Invitation and reminds us that God invites us to share from what God has so abundantly shared with us. Over the course of the following Sundays, you will hear church members sharing their own experiences of responding to this invitation. Please consider volunteering your time and inviting friends and family members to help out too. On race day we need volunteers at various times between the hours of 7:00am and 11:30am. Whether you are participating in the race or not, there are plenty of volunteer opportunities before and after the 5K - so don't worry about missing out!
