1 takes place in the environment of the Spirit. This existence includes the experience of growth in the manifold aspects of our nature: our bodies, minds, feelings, judgments, social relationships, imaginations. In the Spirit we come to recognize Spirit to work in our growing, rather than to struggle against the Spirit by trying to control it though our own powers. This is Craig Dykstra Growing in the Life of Faith September 8, 2013 The Worship of God Sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost Rally Day 10:00 a.m.

3 Preparation for Worship We come to worship from a busy and noisy world. As we prepare to offer ourselves in praise and adoration of God, it is important that we step back from our preoccupations and focus our thoughts on God. We ask that you please turn off all cell phones and pagers. As the music begins this morning, please take time to become more aware of the continuing presence of God. Stand as you are able PRELUDE CHORAL INTROIT Introduction Intermezzo Finale Gerald Bales René Clausen DOXOLOGY (PLEASE STAND AS THE ORGAN INTRODUCTION BEGINS) OLD HUNDREDTH Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise God, all creatures here below; Praise God above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. PEOPLE: You search out my path and my lying down, and are acquainted with all my ways. LEADER: Wonderful are your works; that I know very well. PEOPLE: How weighty to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them! HYMN 555 PRAYER of CONFESSION NUN DANKET Merciful God, you made us in your image, with a mind to know you, a heart to love you, and a will to serve you. But our knowledge is imperfect, our love inconstant, our obedience incomplete. Day by day we fail to grow into your likeness; yet you are slow to be angry with your children. ANTHEM John Rutter O clap your hands together all ye people: O sing unto God with the voice of melody. For the Lord is high and to be feared: he is the great King upon all the earth. God is gone up with a merry noise: and the Lord with the sound of the trump. O sing praises unto our God: O sing praises unto our King. For God is the King of all the earth: Sing ye praises with understanding. O clap your hands together all ye people. -Psalm 47:1-7 GOSPEL LESSON Luke 14:25-33 (Pew Bible, NT, page 78) LEADER: The Word of the Lord. PEOPLE: Thanks be to God. SERMON HYMN John Wilkinson

6 AFFIRMATION of FAITH PRAYERS of the PEOPLE PRESENTATION of OFFERINGS Brief Statement of Faith, Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) We trust in God the Holy Spirit everywhere the giver and renewer of life. The Spirit justifies us by grace through faith, sets us free to accept ourselves and to love God and neighbor, and binds us together with all believers in the one body of Christ, the church. In a broken and fearful world the Spirit gives us courage to pray without ceasing, to witness among all peoples to Christ as Lord and Savior, to unmask idolatries in church and culture, to hear the voices of peoples long silenced, and to work with others for justice, freedom, and peace. In gratitude to God, empowered by the Spirit, we strive to serve Christ in our daily tasks and to live holy and joyful lives, even as we watch for God's new heaven and new earth, praying, Come, Lord Jesus! Amen. Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

7 ANTHEM For the Presence of the Lord David J. Evans arr. Indra Hughes RESPONSE Be still for the presence of the Lord, the Holy One is here, Come bow before him now with reverence and fear. Be still for the power of the Lord is moving in this place, He comes to cleanse and hear, to minister his grace, No work too hard for him: in faith receive from him, Be still for the power of the Lord is moving in this place. Amen. LEADER: PEOPLE: LEADER: PEOPLE: LEADER: PEOPLE: ALL: The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. Merciful and loving God: We thank you for gathering us in and sending us out.
