2 2 ADVENT VOICE A MESSAGE FROM OUR long PASTOR God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change, though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea Psalm 46:1-2 On Monday, October 31st, it will have been 499 years since a university professor walked to the school bulletin board and posted a list of topics for discussion in the upcoming semester. It was the evening before All Saints Day. The next morning a rich collection of relics would be available for viewing. Pilgrims who came for this act of devotion would be like baseball fans at Cooperstown. Here they would see bits and pieces of the great story of faith that shaped all life: straw from the manger that had born the Christ child, bread from the last supper, a piece of the Holy Cross, one of the nails that pierced Jesus hands and feet. Here, too, would be relics of the holy men and women who had touched the world with grace who even now surrounded the heavenly throne and besought God for mercies on behalf of their constituents. The thumb of St. Anne would be there the patron saint upon whom that university professor had called when he was caught in a terrible thunderstorm and fearful of his life. And in grateful devotion, honoring his terrified pledge in the storm, he had become a monk. He had made vows of poverty, chastity and obedience. Costly sacrifices for a young man, but sacrifices thought necessary for a holy life. He would become a priest, able to say the words by which the miracle of bread become Christ was effected. By that act, he would hold the holy God in his hands and he trembled. He was unworthy to touch the divine. He would be sent to study scripture, the least noble of the theological sciences in his day, but he did his work in earnest. And it was there in the words of the holy texts he would hear a new voice. neglected voice of scripture broke out through this young professor, and like a spark in dry grass caused Germany indeed all of Europe to burst into flame. This young professor was judged as a danger to the faith. He was excommunicated, he was cut off from the saving power of the sacraments. He was condemned by the state for teaching false doctrine. Whoever sheltered him would have their lands and life confiscated. Whoever killed him would be doing the emperor a noble service. Eventually this professor had to come out from hiding and take the community back into the words of scripture, calling us to do everything in love. It was a rapidly changing world into which Luther s insights into the message of scripture were spoken. New media, the printing press, changed the conversation. News spread quickly in printed form, crossing Europe in days rather than months and years. Pamphlets and posters flew across the countryside, stirring up conflict and dramatic changes. Luther translated the Bible so people could read it for themselves, and the printing press helped it could be distributed widely. It was a time of great anxiety, too. Foreign enemies, the Turks, threatened Europe and would soon lay siege to Vienna. Society was awash with economic anxieties. Goods were available from far away places for which the princes required cash. Peasants would rise up against economic injustices and thousands would be killed. In all this, Luther tried to keep the movement focused on Christ, on the grace of God, and on the love of neighbor. The Reformation continues in our day and age. Together, how will we continue to keep our focus on Christ, on the grace of God, and on the love of neighbor? Glad to be on the journey with you, Priests were not taught scripture; they were taught how to administer the sacrament. Theologians spent little time in studying scripture; they taught and argued the philosophy of Thomas Aquinas. So this

Thanks, Bill & Cindy Steenis: Home Adult Forum - Sundays at 9:40 Reformation Roots Come work your way through one of the most interesting and important periods of church history, the Reformation. This era begins with the church suffering from moral decay and fierce defensiveness, and ends with a fracturing of the church into many smaller pieces. Onto this stage come some of the most remarkable characters in history. These reformers carry with them fresh ideas that challenge the stunted thinking of that era, as well as recover the deep truths of scripture. Adopt-a-Highway: Saturday, October 29 Ages 15 and up are invited to help us keep our portion of 132nd St. clean. We ll meet in the parking lot at Advent at 9am. 5 Christmas Baskets are coming OCTOBER Jan may have retired from Winterfest, but that doesn't mean it is not going to happen this year. Bob and Gail Walters have offered to coordinate this event, so circle December 10th for fun and fellowship with members and guests. As the cool nights and autumn leaves come to us, it is time to start thinking about Christmas. And for us at Advent, that also means preparing for our annual Christmas Basket event. For those of you who are new to the Advent family, every year we collect funds to purchase and distribute the makings of a Christmas dinner for 225 families in Snohomish county. In early November, we will begin raising the $10,000 needed to purchase the food as well as provide the opportunity for you to sign up to help. Then on Saturday, December 17, we will bag and bring Christmas dinner to the homes of families in need. We begin about 8:30 in the morning and are usually done by Noon. So mark your calendars for Saturday, December 17 and join us for a wonderful opportunity to let the love of Christ be known. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Carolyn Johnson at smith22307@comcast.net. Advent Bell Choir Do you like to hear the bells? Can you read basic music? Then the bell choir is for you! We have openings for bell choir players (No experience needed! The bells are easy to play.) We practice for an hour once a week and play once a month at worship. The bell choir is also seeking a volunteer director. We need someone to lead us! We d like to keep this ministry going! It s a terrific musical outlet. Can you help? Please let either Kirsten Lysen or Laurie in the church office know if you d like to be involved Winterfest started many years ago as a Progressive Dinner, where we would go to different member's houses for one of the courses of a meal. Well, Advent grew out of it, since not many people could host 40 or 50 people, so we decided to hold it in the Fellowship Hall. Nowadays, people sign up to host a table. The host is responsible for decorating a table for 8 in a Christmas theme. We usually need 8 to 10 table hosts for the evening. If you are interested in hosting a table, drop us an at robert.alan.walters@gmail.com For those not hosting that wish to attend, we ask that you either sign up to bring an appetizer, salad or dessert. We're not certain what we will be doing for a main dish, but in years past, we have gotten a Prime Rib from Sean O'Donnells. We'll work out the details and the charge as we get closer to the date. Keep the date on your calendar and plan on joining us for some Christmastime fellowship and fun. Bob & Gail Walters

6 6 ADVENT VOICE A MESSAGE FROM your council president In the next few weeks new back lit signs will be installed on the Sanctuary Walls facing 132 nd. The new Advent Lutheran Church signs will help reinforce or identity within the community. The signs will include our name, the ELCA designation and symbol and RIC designation with symbol. These symbols signify that we are a church that Welcomes All. It is gratifying to know that Advent in now formally a RIC Church and that we truly recognize that in the death and resurrection of Christ, we were reconciled to God. We are a Body of Christ that believes in building relationships through love and grace with ALL people. As a congregation we will not tolerate division on the basis of real or perceived differences. As an RIC Congregation we have pledged to extend Christ s affirming, inclusive love to persons who have often felt excluded and condemned by church and society because of sexual orientation or gender identity. Open Door Ministries (ODM) partners with all RIC Churches and works with Churches that desire to become more welcoming. It is an extended ministry of the North West Washington ELCA Synod and member of the Lutheran Services of America. It is a ministry that Advent helps support. On November 5 th, ODM will be holding its 16 th Annual Gala Dinner Auction. Last year about twenty five Advent members and friends attended the Auction for a fun night of fellowship, while at the same time providing financial support for ODM. The Auction is the primary funding source to support Open Door, yet revenue has slightly decreased over the past couple of years. ODM is looking for donated auction items. If ODM is to thrive we must all get behind the auction and make sure we have desirable items for both the Live and Silent Auction. If you would like to help support ODM consider procuring a donation for the Auction. I am serving as procurement coordinator and would welcome items and or questions you might have. Donations can be something as simple as a gift certificates to a business, live show or sporting event, a favorite restaurant or personal services. You would be surprised how many business we frequent are willing to support local programs by making a donation if we were to just ask them for one. Do you have a summer cabin, time share or know someone that does who would be willing to donate it as a mini get away? An invitation or gift certificate for a cruise on Lake Washington, Puget Sound, or to Victoria, etc. would also be excellent auction items. Theme baskets are also welcome items. Remember all donations are tax deductible. If you are interested in attending the Auction please see ODM Board Members: Jill Bossen, Kim Hall or me. An invitation has been posted on the Bulletin Board in the main office. Registration can be completed on line by going to Opendoorelca.org. Kim Hall is in charge of registration and welcomes any questions you might have. Let s see if we can have another fun evening of fellowship with Advent members as we join with members of other congregations that have also made a commitment to a ministry of reconciliation and hospitality from all over the Synod. Blessings to you and your family, All Saints Sunday Nov. 6 is All Saints Day. We will be honoring those who have passed away during this year. If you would like your loved one s name included please add their name to the All Saints Day list located in the entry to the Sanctuary or Laurie in the church office at laurie@adventlutheran.net. We will need all names by Sunday, Oct. 30. Names will be part of our prayers on Nov. 6 at worship.
