2 What is Lent and why does it last forty days? Lent is a season of forty days, not counting Sundays, which begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Saturday. Lent comes from the Anglo Saxon word lencten, which means "spring." The forty days represents the time Jesus spent in the wilderness, enduring the temptation of Satan and preparing to begin his ministry. Lent is a time of repentance, fasting and preparation for the coming of Easter. It is a time of selfexamination and reflection. In the early church, Lent was a time to prepare new converts for baptism. Today, Christians focus on their relationship with God, often choosing to give up something or to volunteer and give of themselves for others. Sundays in Lent are not counted in the forty days because each Sunday represents a "minieaster" and the reverent spirit of Lent is tempered with joyful anticipation of the Resurrection. 4 Sunday March 12th is Faith Promise/Mission Sunday. Kimo Opiew, Missions Chair, will present a new International Mission Project. The Ambassadors for Christ who lived in Kakuma and other refugee camps in Kenya will share their story, and the Anyuak Ethiopians will sing. Mission for Maize will assist families and friends who are still languishing in the camp, praying for a permanent home. Donations and pledges for the food ministry will be accepted on Mission Sunday, or anytime following. Please specify Maize in the note/other section. As we enter the Lenten season, please reflect on your Lenten offering gift. Special envelopes will be available in April. Donations will support Wesley Community Services. 4 March 26, 2017 UMCOR Sunday (formerly One Great Hour of Sharing) Your gift provides major support for immediate assistance in the wake of natural and human-caused disasters and helps support ongoing ministries of food, shelter, health and peace. One Great Hour of Sharing giving allows 100 percent of designated gifts to be used for the specified disaster response or other ministry.

5 Spring Forward: The clocks are set ahead one hour during Spring Forward. In 2017, this occurs on Sunday, March 12th. See more at: php#sthash.7yPRw0hD.dpuf The time-honored ritual of setting clocks forward an hour is coming in the spring, as daylight saving time (sometimes erroneously called daylight saving time) will kick in. The springtime clock-change continues the long tradition started by Benjamin Franklin to conserve energy. How Did It Start? Benjamin Franklin takes the honor (or the blame, depending on your view of the time changes) for coming up with the idea to reset clocks in the summer months as a way to conserve energy, according to David Prerau, author of "Seize the Daylight: The Curious and Contentious Story of Daylight Saving Time" (Thunder's Mouth Press, 2005). By moving clocks forward, people could take advantage of the extra evening daylight rather than wasting energy on lighting. At the time, Franklin was ambassador to Paris and so wrote a witty letter to the Journal of Paris in 1784, rejoicing over his "discovery" that the sun provides light as soon as it rises. 6 United Methodist Women is celebrating its 150th anniversary by strengthening and passing on its mission inheritance with the Legacy Fund. The forward -looking permanent endowment will provide a firm foundation for generations of United Methodist Women to come as they engage in mission with the women, children, and youth of their day. The Legacy Fund s income will ensure a regular source of support for the core expenses of being in mission. It will provide for administration of United Methodist Women's grants, scholarships, mission personnel, membership nurture, and leadership development, as well as enable the organization to make much-needed technological updates to its data and communications operating systems. The total program of United Methodist Women is mission. Ingredients: 2 bunches spinach, rinsed and torn into bite-sized pieces 4 cups strawberries, sliced ½ cup pecans, chopped Private Selection White Balsamic Vinegar & Honey Dressing Simply toss spinach, strawberries and pecans until mixed. Tip! Pour dressing into a ramekin then dip your fork into the dressing before getting a bite of salad. It's an easy way to control how much dressing you use.
