ISSUE 376 JUNE 2018 Newsletter ST. JOSEPH CATHOLIC CHURCH SHANNON MORGAN ~ EDITOR
Dear Parishioners, Our world needs mothers and fathers. This month of June goes to our Dads. For me, it s been 24 years since my father has passed away and there is not a day goes by that I don t think about him. I have learned to adjust to the life without him but I do feel his presence in so many ways. When times are tough and my schedule seems complex, my flesh is weak too and I don t see the blue skies beyond those dark clouds hanging over, I hear his voice say, keep going. Those times that I m not sure what to say one weekend, needing confidence to perform a task for people I barely know or doubting my abilities to perform, I hear my father s voice deep inside say, you can do it. When those scary moments of the past rear its ugly head inside and I really stand trembling before all I remember his big warm bear hugs. Those times when everything I do or say just comes out wrong and everyone is so scattered and I feel like everything is falling apart, I remember dad helping me pick up all the pieces and putting it back together. Like those moments we remember working on the cars with our Dads while the radio is playing and he is giving us all the answers to life. I really don t remember what he said just being with him is all that mattered. Knowing our Dads help us know our true Father. Our memories personalized our Father s presence in a way that just brings into our hearts. When I read Scripture I hear Our Father through Our Lord say the say kind of stuff our Dads said. I hear, keep going, you can do it and when I say mass at times I do feel the big warm bear hugs from our loving Father. The truth of faith are His ways of showing also how to put the pieces back together when they get scattered. The way we love Our Father is no different than the way we love our Dads. Our Dads aren t perfect and they didn t solve all our problems but they are there to show us how to deal with them. I know for those whose Dads aren t around I know you had father-like men in your life to help walk with you through life. If you didn t have an earthly man then you can chose to have a divine one. The one who knows all truth and the one who knows all love and willing to show you all of it if we walk with Him. The Holy Spirit, the spirit of Jesus, combined with the word has a way of illuminating the lessons of life so we can know what to do. You don t have to go through life without a Dad you can let the Church be Dad for you just like it is with me. For all you hard working Dads out there I say thank you and I know your family does too. Thanks for bringing a sense of security and peace to a Church that seems scared and confused sometimes just like the peace and security St. Joseph brought to the Holy Family. Happy Father s Day Dad!
ALTAR SOCIETY NEWS St. Joseph altar Society met in Gallagher Hall on Thursday May 4 th at 5:30pm. President Stephanie Frase opened our meeting with the Our Father. Secretary Pam Thornton did not read the April minutes because she forgot her folder. She did give a card report for February May 4 th, that five sympathy, three get well and two encouragement cards have been sent to members of the parish. Treasurer Angelique Ford gave the financial report. Old Business: Cleaning of church. It was stated our announcement trying to organize teams for cleaning the church would be read at Mass. It was suggested that the ushers should be straightening the books after Mass but not all of them have been doing it. There was some discussion as to whether or not we can get rid of the cards in the pews since they are in poor condition and parishioners should be familiar with the changes by now. A motion was made that we accept the changes to the by-laws as written. The motion was seconded and the changes were passed and will be in the new blue book. New Business: The slate of officers that was presented by the nominating committee was: Trudy Pascale for President and Judy Reese for Vice-President. There were no other nominations and nobody objected so the slate of officers was accepted. Installation will be in June at the Altar Society picnic. Gretchen brought two new members to the meeting. There were 9 members present. The Social Committee Chairpersons were Mary Shannon and Ann Smith. The 50/50 was won by Leonard Zell. The door prize was won by Margie Nanak. We closed by saying the Rosary, led by Mary Shannon. Respectfully Submitted, Pam Thornton, Secretary
St. Joseph Parish Council Meeting Minutes May 16, 2018 Meeting was called to order by President Tim Boutwell and opened with a prayer. All members were present. Minutes of previous were read and approved. Committee Reports Religious Education: Our last day of PRE is May 20, The Diocese of Little Rock replaced the Protecting God s Children program (safe environment), Virtus, with Circle of Grace, a similar program. Little guidance was given to the parish staff went it met with the Chancery Office of the Diocese of Little Rock in August 2017 on how and when to use this with our students. We were recently told we had to complete the training prior to the end of the 2018 program. Connie Boutwell, the safe environment coordinator, met with Pam Thornton and Deacon Bud and put the nuts and bolts together and the teachers trained the students on May 13 th and will complete it on May 20 th. Now we are in compliance. Confirmation for 2019 is scheduled on Saturday, June 22, at the 5:00 p.m. Mass. The Confirmation class will consist of the th and 9 th grade students. Building and Grounds: St. Joseph Cemetery University Street Area is owned by the Highway Department not the City of Pine Bluff; it was purchased by the Hwy. Dept. from the Diocese years ago. Church Sanctuary and Rectory received damage from the storm on March 3 rd. There is a leak in the church. Reynolds Construction came and repaired the damage. Another storm caused more damage. This is the 3 rd or 4 th time we have had to have the roof repaired. Jim Rinchuso contacted Reynolds construction to address the problems we are having. The protective windows received hail damage and Pine Bluff Glass was not able to find the replacement glass for these windows. They do suggest we contact Soos Stained Glass from North Little Rock. One large tree has been removed from St Joseph Cemetery. Waiting to have the other one removed. The Building and Grounds committee has decided to go with Prieto s Lawn Service/ Carlos Prieto for the lawn care of St Joseph Cemetery. They started on May 1 st. Choir loft ventilation project: Pine Bluff Heating and Air ran a new ventilation duct and a new LED light was installed in-house in the choir loft. More lighting behind the organ pipe chest will be installed at a later date. Unfinished Business Building committee is still looking at the list of changes for the foyer. New Business Tim Boutwell presented to the Council the need for a new lawn mower. It was suggested having Jim Rinchuso look around for different prices and the best lawn mower to buy. A committee will need to be appointed for the church scholarship. The Council will break for the summer unless there is special need for a meeting. The meetings will resume on September 12 at 6:15. No further business meeting was adjourned and closed with a prayer. Respectfully Submitted, Angelique Ford Secretary

Why be a Knight? Why be a Knight when you can join any men's organization? Well, gentlemen, the Knights of Columbus can offer you so much more than a monthly get together with your friends. The Knights of Columbus are readily available for his brother Knights in time of need. The Knights of Columbus are ever present during disasters whether local, statewide, national, or global. The Knights of Columbus support their parish community and Priest. The fraternal relationships you will form will stay with you for a lifetime. Your families will always know they can rely on a brother Knight in their time of need. In short, you should become a Knight to enrich all aspects of your life! Please discuss this with a Knight from your parish. The Knights of Columbus are endeavoring to help place a "stork bus" (a mobile ultrasound unit) and an additional ultrasound machine in our community. The Hope Pregnancy Resource Center in Pine Bluff has been chosen to be the recipient. Jefferson County has the 2nd highest rate of abortion in the state of Arkansas. This is NOT something to be proud of. Please help us fund this crucial need to provide for the health of the mothers and the lives of their unborn children. The goal established for our area is $26, and must be reached by June 30, At this time, we have collected $2, in donations. Remember, all donations are tax deductible - please see any Knight of Columbus to donate to this very worthy cause. A receipt for your donation can be provided through the Knights of Columbus. June Calendar: June 3 - The Most Holy Body & Blood of Christ June 4-4 th Degree meeting at 6:30 p.m. immediately followed by Council 1153 business meeting June 5 - St. Boniface June 8 - The Most Sacred Heart of Jesus June 11 - St. Barnabus, Apostle June 17 - Father's Day! Remember your father, grandfather, god-father, and all other father-figures in your life June 21 - St. Aloysius Gonzaga June 24 - The Nativity of St. John the Baptist June 29 - Sts. Peter & Paul, Apostles There will be a 4 th Degree Exemplification on June 23 in Jacksonville at St. Jude Catholic Church. All interested 3 rd Degree Knights should contact any Knight from Council 1153 or Assembly 26. "The glory of the Knights of Columbus is not based on humanitarian works alone. Even more admirable have been your insistence upon the supremacy of God and your fidelity to the Vicar of Christ. In truth you can call yourselves 'brothers' because you call God your Father and have declared yourselves ready to do His will and serve His cause... The Knights of Columbus is an immense force for good." --Blessed Pope Paul VI
