2 June 9, 2013 St. Florian Parish Page Three KNOW THE MASS, ONE WORD AT A TIME Take KNOW THE MASS, ONE WORD AT A TIME Tomar In England, you might see a restaurant sign that says "Dine in or take away." For the British, "take away" is equivalent to our "carry out." Actually, "take away" may be the more accurate phrase. It implies obtaining something, holding it, and going away to consume it elsewhere. Surprisingly, this same action of "taking away" is deeply embedded in the Sunday Mass we celebrate together, although it s not an immediately obvious action. If we have fully and actively participated in the Mass, we will take away the Word of God and the Bread of Life that we have received. We will hold onto these sustaining realities within ourselves. We will walk back into our familiar worlds of family, work, and community. And there we will continue to draw from these mysteries and, God willing, share them with others. Church doors will be opened at 6:45 am Mass Book There are 110 Masses left between June and December of this year. We need these filled before we open up the 2014 Mass book. Please stop by the rectory to reserve your Masses. Kingdom Rock At Kingdom Rock kids will learn that God is everywhere. Each day centers on a bible story and a bible point. Each day will also include songs, crafts, bible adventures, games and snacks. Children will learn to identify God s presence in everything and everyone around them. Mark the dates on your calendar JULY 29 to AUGUST 2. The fun begins at 9:00am and will end at noon each day. Registration forms are on the table in front of the poster or come to the rectory. Children age 4 to 9 are welcome. Please use a separate form for each child. Cost is $15.00 per child. St. Anthony Of Padua Book Rack Selection St. Anthony of Padua is best known in popular piety as the saint to whom you turn when you lose something. Many believers can tell stories of articles rediscovered after praying for Anthony s intercession. He should not be confused with Anthony the abbot, whose memorial is January 17. That saint lived to be 100 years old, dwelling in the desert and committed to self-denial - he is probably delighted every time you lose something! If you want your possessions back, Anthony of Padua is your intercessor. Anthony was born in 1195 in Lisbon and joined the Franciscans at an early age. He felt called to the missions in Morocco, but he shipwrecked on the shores of Sicily. He ended up in Padua, where he became famous as a preacher and where the Italians adopted him as their own. When people heard Anthony preach, they reformed their lives. They reconciled with one another. They returned stolen property. They forgave debts. Anthony knew the Bible well, and he could present complicated teachings in simple language. He has been named one of the doctors of the church. In statues and paintings, Anthony is often shown holding an open book on which sits the Christ Child. Anthony held the word of God and preached the word of God, so that people could hear and understand the Word-made flesh, Jesus Christ. He made Christ as approachable as a child. The one thing Anthony probably most wants us never to lose and always to find is Christ in the word of God. The collect for his memorial on June 13 names Anthony as an outstanding preacher and as an intercessor for people in their times of need. Your help is greatly appreciated. Our pantry serves over 200 families per month who live within the zip code area. Please consider joining the Society of St. Vincent de Paul on June 29th for the Hunger Walk along Lake Michigan. A bus will leave St. Florian parking lot at 7:30 a.rn. to Soldier Field for the start of the walk. All who register will receive a t-shirt, goodie bag, and misc. treats. We plan to be back in Hegewisch by 12:30. This is a great opportunity for students to earn service hours. Anyone under 18 must have a parental permission slip to register.
