Some people are DRAMATICALLY delinquent in their payments which slows down our goal. We really can't move forward until we receive most of the funds for the boiler. 4 Page 5 October 23, 2016 Do Re Me Collect by Paul Turner Paul Turner John the Baptist is ultimately responsible for the names of the notes in the musical scale. In the eighth century, and unknown poet and composer wrote a hymn in Latin to observe the feast of the birth of John the Baptist (June 24). Here are the words of his first verse: Ut The collect is the prayer that concludes the introductory rites of the Mass. The priest addresses the people, "Let us pray," signalling the purpose of the silence and the words that follow. Then he offers the prayer of the day, concluding with a formula to which everyone responds, "Amen." The silence is important. During this time everyone is to "become aware of being in God's presence," so that they "may call to mind their intentions." Everyone prays "together with the Priest" (General Instruction of the Roman Missal, 54) - exercising the common priesthood of the baptized. If you have come to Mass with particular needs, this silence is the time to call them to mind. As the priest offers the prayer, he is "collect-ing" the thoughts of the people, who themselves have been "collect-ed" together from their homes for this celebration at church. Although it is sometimes called the "opening prayer" of the Mass, it is more traditionally called the "collect." The words express the character of the celebration. This is especially clear on occasions such as a wedding, a saint's day, and liturgical times such as Advent, Christmas, Lent, and Easter. People attentive to the words of the collect will discover that the priest may be articulating the purpose of the event. At other times the words are more generic. Many of these prayers were composed from the sixth to the eighth centuries. Some of them were written for particular liturgical days and are still being used on or near those days more than 1,000 years later. The collect is addressed to God the Father, and it is offered through Jesus Christ in the unity of the Holy Spirit. The priest extends his hands while he prays, using a gesture popular in Christian prayer since the earliest times." queant laxis / resonare fibris / Mira gestorum / famuli tuorum, / Solve polluti / labii reatum, / Sancte Ioannes. This verse asks St. John the Baptist to loosen our voices to praise God, just as the voice of his father, Zechariah, was loosened. Zechariah had been mute throughout Elizabeth's pregnancy, only getting his voice back after John was born. In the 11th century, musician Guido ofarezzo noticed something about the melody of that hymn. The first note of each phrase begins one pitch higher than the preceding one, spelling out the first six notes of the scale. As you can see, the Latin symbols associated with them are ut-re-mi-fa-sol-la. Guido gave the pitches those names, basing them on the hymn to John the Baptist. The first letters of the final two words (Sancte Ioannes) eventually gave the name to the seventh pitch, originally called "si." It was later altered to "ti" just as "ut" was changed to "do" probably because it was more pleasant to the ear. The hymn is still part of the official evening prayer of the Roman Catholic church. Near the longest day of the year, when the sun starts it's the descent, the notes mark their ascent. John the Baptist said of Jesus, "he must increase; I must decrease." As the decreasing light of day recalls the birth of John the Baptist, the ascending notes of the scale point the way towards Jesus Christ.
