2 St. Florian Parish Page Three KNOW THE MASS, ONE WORD AT A TIME Bow We bow when we want to honor someone. Sometimes, we bow in submission before forces beyond our control. And we may even bow before an audience to receive their applause and recognition. Our lowered head or our bended bodies make a bow for many reasons. And when we bow our heads or bodies at Mass, we do so not surprisingly for different reasons as well. In the Creed, we bow at the words... and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. We humbly and gratefully bow to the Eternal Word who humbled himself to come among us as one like us in all things but sin. We bow before receiving Holy Communion, a gesture of deep reverence before the mystery of the Body and Blood of the Lord. At the end of Mass before a solemn blessing, we bow our heads when we hear, Bow down for the blessing. In that moment, we submit ourselves to all the good and gracious gifts God wants to give us. Reverence, submission, and gratitude all this in a simple gesture. Si queremos honrar a alguna persona hacemos una reverencia inclinándonos ante ella. Nos inclinamos en señal de sumisión ante fuerzas que nos sobrepasan. Con una inclinación, agradecemos el aplauso y reconocimiento de una audiencia. Así, nada tiene de extraño que inclinemos nuestra cabeza o nuestro cuerpo por diferentes razones también en la misa. En el Credo, nos inclinamos al pronunciar las palabras... y por obra del Espíritu Santo se encarnó de María, la Virgen, y se hizo hombre. Llenos de humildad y agradecimiento nos inclinamos ante la Palabra Eterna que se humilló para venir hasta nosotros como uno en todo igual a nosotros menos en el pecado. Nos inclinamos cuando vamos a recibir la Sagrada Comunión, un gesto de profunda reverencia ante el misterio del Cuerpo y de la Sangre del Señor. Today s Gospel reading from Mark 10 outlines the demanding (seemingly impossible), requirements of Christian discipleship, It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for one who is rich to enter the kingdom of God. Think of a time when, confronted with an injustice (i.e. racism, sexism) the Eucharist provided you with grace to act with courage and justice. What difference did the Eucharist make in this situation for you? It will begin on October 11, 2012, the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council. It also coincides with the 20th anniversary of the publication of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. The year will end on November 24, 2013, the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, Universal King. During the Year of Faith, Catholic are asked to study and reflect on the documents of Vatican II and the catechism so that they may deepen their knowledge of the faith. The Eucharistic Sacrifice, also called Holy Mass, is the wellspring of our Catholic life and also its summit. Every Catholic, at every moment, is caught up in one of three movements: either he or she is on the way to church, giving witness to the Kingdom by preparing for the Sacred Banquet, or he is in church, participating fully, consciously and actually in the Sacred Liturgy, or he is sent forth, that is, sent from Mass into the world to bear witness to that which we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we have looked upon and touched with our hands, all that concerns the Word of Life 1 John 1:1. Thus the Church lives from Eucharist to Eucharist, amazed at the wonder of so great a gift and awaiting her blessed hope Titus 2:13. This is why Catholics need to understand the importance of recognizing that our Eucharistic life begins on the way to church. We should go to church with a heart made ready for the Mystery we will encounter. There are a couple of things we can do to prepare. First we can read the texts appointed for the day s Mass. These include the first reading from the Old Testament, the psalm response, the epistle from the New Testament and finally the Gospel. You can easily find these readings on many Catholic calendars, in your missal or on the internet at When you prepare for Mass by reading the readings in advance, try to let them resonate in your heart, read the texts aloud, slowly and with attention. Repeat any phrases that strike you as beautiful or especially apt. Then turn it around. Let the Word which God speaks to you in the Scripture become your prayer by offering it back to God. Then, for the next few moments, remain in silence. Adore the God Who has spoken to you and ask Him to make you hungry for the daily bread Luke 11:4. which you will receive at Mass.
