3 Page 4 From the Pastor's Desk: 5th Sunday of Easter Thank You Dear Parishioners of St. Florian, Thank you for your generosity and for all you do for St. Florian. At this time, when the heating season is approaching, we are trying to meet the demands that this means. As you know, our heating bills are high every year. Our old Church boiler is not only old, it is not sufficient for our needs. Once it is turned on our gas bills skyrocket because the controls on the boiler are not precise. We are still waiting for the TO TEACH WHO CHRIST IS campaign to give us money to install a new boiler, but we need to wait until the campaign is over before we receive any money, so there is still a couple of years ahead of us. Meanwhile we have to face high heating bills. We are still paying on last winter's bills and the new heating season will begin in about 2 months. To prevent the accumulation of all the heating bills I would like to ask you to increase your donation in the ENERGY ENVELOPE. I hope that the heating season will be mild for all of us, but once the Church boiler is turned on we are still paying for the usage. I will keep you in my prayers, please keep me in yours. It was a lot of work and we appreciate all you do. Thanks so much. Capital Letters By Paul Turner People will never hear one ofthe revisions to the words of the Mass. In the revised translation, new rules for capitalization have been applied. These sometimes look puzzling on the page, but the style should be more consistent. For example, wherever capital letters appear in Latin, they also appear in English. This is why such words as "Angels" and "Saints" have changed their appearance. However, other words have been capitalized in English, even though they retain a lower case in Latin, such as "Bishop," "Priest," and "Deacon." The word "cross" is capitalized when it refers to the instrument of the death of Jesus, but is kept lower case otherwise. The same is true of the word "resurrection." For example, the third memorial acclamation, addressing our Savior, says, "by your Cross and Resurrection, you have set us free." However, the rubrics refer to the "cross" that is carried in procession at the beginning of Mass. Some people are surprised that pronouns referring to the divinity are not capitalized. Some publications use capitals for words such as "He," "His," and "Him" when referring to God. The missal does not. It has, for example, "Through him, and with him, and in him," when alluding to Christ at the end of every eucharistic prayer. This remains the case in the present translation. The capitalization of so many pronouns would have made the editing and reading ofthe book more difficult. The rules for capitalization in English are established not by the translators or by the conferences ofbishops. The Vatican established these in its rulebook for translators. Sometimes the reason for a capital letter is hard to discern; other times it seems obvious. Capitals are meant to illumine the text, not to distract people, who won't hear them anyway. 4 April 29, 2018 Page 5 Master of Ceremonies Paul Turner A master ofceremonies assists the flow of a liturgy; the role is especially appropriate for Masses with a bishop, but a person may fulfill this responsibility in other celebrations to achieve "grace, simplicity, and order" in the ceremony (Ceremonial of Bishops, 34). The role is colloquially abbreviated as "emcee" or "MC," but the full title given in the liturgical books is "master of ceremonies." Any layperson or cleric may serve as the master of ceremonies. The person usually wears an alb or cassock and surplice. If a deacon fulfills the role, he may wear his stole and even a dalmatic. The role of the master of ceremonies is not limited to the liturgical celebration; he or she helps prepare the event, coordinating with musicians and other ministers on the actions and words of the service. The person with these responsibilities should know the history and nature of the liturgy and be familiar not only with liturgical law but also with practical matters. A master of ceremonies helps make the liturgy beautiful and alive, encouraging the fruitful participation ofthe people. Proper planning and rehearsing will help make the ceremony proceed more smoothly. A poorly prepared master of ceremonies may become a distraction in the sanctuary - giving commands and forcibly moving ministers into positions. The Ceremonial of Bishops says that the master of ceremonies "should exercise the greatest discretion" and carry out responsibilities with "reverence, patience, and careful attention" (35). Any minister in the sanctuary should set an example of prayer and respect. At Masses of solemnity in parish churches, a master of ceremonies may help maintain order and provide an element of comfort to ministers unfamiliar with the details of the ceremony but wanting to serve at the altar of God. All Is by Paul Turner At the conclusion of the Eucharistic Prayer, the priest sings or says the doxology, and all answer, Amen. Some people have questioned the grammar of this line: Through him, and with him, and in him, / O God, almighty Father, / in the unity of the Holy Spirit, / all glory and honor is yours, / forever and ever. Shouldn t it be all glory and honor are yours?the word all commonly takes a plural verb in English, but there are occasions when it takes the singular. For example, you may say to someone you love, All my possessions are yours. But you could just as easily say, All that I have is yours. The word all takes are in the first sentence but is in the second. You could also say, Each and every thing I have is yours. The word all in the doxology is a translation ofthe Latin word omnis, which is singular and usually means each or every. It has a plural form, omnes, which usually means all. In Latin, the doxology says something like this: each glory and [every] honor is yours. The English translation has always chosen to simplify this by using the word all in its singular sense. It means something like this: All glory is yours, and all honor is yours. The plural verb are would not have changed the meaning ( all glory and honor are yours ), but the English translation usually tries to give you a sense of how the Latin expresses it.no matter how you say it, God deserves all the glory and honor we canpossibly offer at the end of the Eucharistic Prayer.
