2 July 14, 2013 St. Florian Parish Page Three Raising Faith-Filled Kids One Word at a Time Patience Criando hijos creyentes una palabra a la vez Paciencia One afternoon one of my daughters was uncharacteristically cranky. She started whining, wouldn t listen, and seemed intent on making my life miserable. I grew increasingly impatient and angry until I realized that she was coming down with he flu and her irritability was a symptom. Once I knew the cause of her crabbiness, compassion replaced my impatience. I began to care for my daughter and deal with a small but healthy dose of guilt in my heart. Patience means facing life on life s terms, which means on God s terms. It means tolerating delay, something our fast-paced society finds difficult. The way to patience is to keep your eye on the big picture and be fully attentive to the present moment. To cultivate patience this week, pray using Jesus words, Thy will, not mine, be done. ---Tom McGrath Una tarde, una de mis hijas tenía un mal humor inusual. Empezó a lloriquear, no escuchaba y parecia decidida a hacerme la vida imposible. Yo estaba cada vez más immpaciente y enojado hasta que me di cuenta de que mi hija se estaba enfermando de la gripey que esa irritabilidad era un sintoma. Una vez que descubrí la causa de su malhumor, la compasión remplazó mi impaciencia. La empecé a cuidar, también a enfrentarme a una dosis pequeña aunque salludable de culpa en mi corazón. La paciencia implica enfrentarse a la vida bajo las condiciones de la vida es decir, bajo las condiciones de Dios. Eso incluye tolerar los retrasos, algo que a nuestra sociedad acelerada le cuesta mucho trabajo. Para lograr la paciencia no hay que perder de vista el panorama general y estar plenamente atentos al momento presente. Regarding the canonization of Blessed Popes John XXIII and John Paul II July 5, 2013 The canonization of blessed Popes John XXIII and John Paul II will be a joyful moment. The history of the Church is the story of holiness. It is a centuries long saga of disciples growing ever closer to the Lord. Both Popes now join the great chorus of those recognized publicly as friends of the Lord, witnesses to the transforming power of God s grace active in human lives. This canonization will encourage everyone to stay on the path of discipleship. The third year will focus on fostering deeper connections with parents, particularly when they present their children for sacraments. This year may include some of the following elements: 1. Creating sacramental programs for parents that include a deep understanding of the sacraments. 2. Highlight parents' responsibility to raise their children in the faith. 3. Encourage parental involvement over time (participants one year become the volunteer leaders the next year). 4. Retreats or other programs for parents that encourage deeper reflections on their faith life and their role as models for their children. 5. Encourage parents to reconnect with their faith and provide them with homebased guidance to raise their children in the faith

Each day centers on a bible story and a bible point. Each day will also include songs, crafts, bible adventures, games and snacks. Children will learn to identify God s presence in everything and everyone around them. Mark the dates on your calendar JULY 29 to AUGUST 2. The fun begins at 9:00am and will end at noon each day. (Luke 10:37) Jesus told the parable we find in today s gospel because a scholar of the law asked him, Who is my neighbor? (Luke 10: 29). According to Luke, the question was really a trap. But knowing what was in the man s heart, Jesus turned the tables on him. By telling a story about a Samaritan who did the right thing when other experts in the Law like this lawyer didn t, Jesus made it clear that it doesn t take years of study to know how to love God and love our neighbor. It just takes the courage and the humility to do what is right.

Andrean High School: Joseph Noworyta St. Francis de Sales High School: Jensen Hunt Archdiocese of Chicago Archdiocese of Chicago Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, June 30, 2013 I am writing this note to thank those who have contributed to the public debate on genderless marriage by speaking clearly to the fact that men and women are not interchangeable. I recognized that biological and cultural fact when I addressed this note to brothers and sisters, instead of assuming that brothers covers the entire human race. This obvious fact was forgotten or ignored by the Supreme Court last week. Civil law doesn t change biological fact, however, and everyone knows that fathers and mothers are not interchangeable in the begetting and raising of children. Same-sex marriage is a contradiction in terms. Someday everybody will recognize that again. In the meantime, we must respect individuals, no matter their sexual orientation, and we must work to protect the authentic meaning of marriage in law. God bless you. Reconozco este hecho biológico y cultural cuando dirijo esta nota a mis hermanos y hermanas, en lugar de asumir que hermanos abarca a toda la raza humana. Este hecho evidente fue olvidado o ignorado por la Corte Suprema la semana pasada. Sin embargo, la ley civil no cambia el hecho biológico y todo el mundo sabe que los padres y madres no son intercambiables en la procreación y la crianza de los niños. El matrimonio del mismo sexo es una contradicción desde los términos que la definen. Algún día, todo el mundo va a reconocer eso de nuevo.
