The Living God I fancy I do believe in a kind of God, in a sort of way, says Aurberon Garth to his father in C. E. Montague s novel, Rough Justice, just now and then anyhow. I get a feeling that something inside me or round me, is putting it to me straight that something has to be done, if for no other reason than that this power or spirit, whatever it is, makes me feel that it is the only thing in the whole world that s really worth doing and then the thing seems perfectly easy to do, however scaring and hard it might have seemed at any other time. That s God, all right, answered the father. Take another instance. A little while ago I attended a gathering of Christian people. During the conversations a man said, I never hesitate to bear witness to the fact of the living God. As some of you know I had a rough time recently. The strain left me with a nervous breakdown. I took my condition to God in prayer. He said to me, Be still, and know that I am God. I practiced the art of stillness, ceased my rushing about here and there, trusted God, believing His healing touch could put me on my feet again. And here I am to say that He has done it. Only a person who is fully alive and active can do things. The consciousness of the gifts of direction, help, and new strength can come only from the One who is able to give it. The living God. This phrase is found on page after page of the Bible: Ye are the children of the living God. To serve the living and true God. The living God is among you. We have our hope set on the living God. I know there are some people who find it difficult to believe in a living God. They have not got beyond believing in a God who, in ages past, created this universe very much as a watchmaker constructs a watch, then wound it up and let it go and ever since has retired from the scene. They do not believe that He is a God who is today in intimate contact with His world and the members of the vast human family. There is no inspiration in this conception of God. It robs us of the trust that can help us to realize that He is today an unseen Companion who walks with us along life s road, giving us the power to be master of every situation. The witness of human experience is that He is a living God. If we follow the lead given us by men and women who can speak by virtue of their personal knowledge of the living God, we shall find what they found, a God who rewards our faith in Him; One who hears our prayers and answers them in the way that is best for us; a God who inspired Jesus to say, Lo, I am with you always. To believe in a living God means that we shall face life with the assurance that we are not alone, step out on life s way with hope in our heart, and have our mind stabilized by the realization that the sovereignty of the living God is a reality. Then one day the Spirit of the living God touched his spirit and did something for him that he expressed in these words: Long my imprisoned spirit lay, Fast bound in sin and nature s night; Thine eye diffused a quickening ray I woke, the dungeon flamed with light: My chains fell off, my heart was free, I rose, went forth, and followed Thee. Someone did something for him. Someone enabled him to break out of the prison in which he was living. It was done by God who is living and active. The result was that Charles Wesley was filled with a joy and peace he had not known before. He had to begin by trusting God to do something for him. If we, through this short article, speak to anyone who doubts God s ability to do anything for him or her then we ask you to believe the witness of men and women of the past and present that He will do things for us if we exercise faith and trust in Him. This is His world and He lives in it with us. Once we are sure of the truth that this is God s world and that we can find Him in it, we shall feel at home in this universe and learn that there is nothing within the world or without it that need make us afraid. A writer, John Betjeman, tells of an incident that occurred during World War II. During this period of stress and strain the members of a certain religious order prayed regularly for prisoner-of -war camps. In one camp, the chaplain found the attitude of the men distressingly difficult. Then one day, quite suddenly, things began to change. More and more men became willing to listen to him, and this encouraged the chaplain. Men who had been embittered suddenly revealed an attitude of calm. They spoke of their deep needs. When the chaplain got home and met the members of this order, he discovered that it was at the very time they had been praying for his camp that those changes had taken place. These praying people knew there was Someone to whom they could pray, the living God. When we pray for others, we not only help ourselves, we provide another avenue through which God s invigorating power can come. Through prayer we let in the sunshine of His love. Someone has said, Believe, pray, and trust as though the living God were, and you will find that He is. Praise to the living God! UITO HAS A NEW ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT: Robbin Eaves moved to the Port Angeles area from Atlanta, Georgia in She has worked in retail, veterinary medicine, class room instruction, and administrative assisting. Her love of spiritual truth has taken her into metaphysical learning. She began studying A Course in Miracles in the early eighties. She enjoys singing and is classically trained. Her new musical learning is singing in the jazz style. She lives in Joyce, WA with her husband of forty-three years, her three dogs, seven cats, and Henry the painted turtle who just walked up my driveway one day. WELCOME TO UNITY ROBBIN!

SATURDAY: Good will is a blessed expression of divine order. From Weekly Unity, June 19th, 1966 A Legacy to Remember is a wonderful Father s Day message that was given by Rev. Steve Towles at Unity of South Sound in Federal Way. Rev. Towles has been a Unity minister for over 30 years, having served in Sacramento, Reno, Seattle and Edgewood. He once lead our Board Retreat when he was the Regional Representative for Unity Northwest Region. You can access his message at the following link: The Board met on May 15th. Alice Alexander, Charles Mawson, Duane Morris, Kim Perkins, Erik Simpson, Teia Stitzel were present. Finances: The April tithe was $345 (See distribution in next month s Church Finances section). The Board allocated $100 to the Minister s Search Fund bringing the total to $5106. One hundred dollars was also allocated to the Bathroom/Sewer Fund (along with used book sales dollars) bringing that fund totals to $10,503. New Business: There was preliminary discussion of the feasibility of selling 2 lots of our 5-lot parking area to fund upgrades. Much more research to ensue The Board is looking into upgrading church rental contracts. Duane volunteered to erect the No Overnight Parking signs. There was more discussion about purchasing a new shed and recycling the old one. ~ Next meeting June 19th after the potluck.

New Six-Week Class at UITO: Healing and Wholeness Part I Instructor: Rev. Donna Little Wednesdays, 6:30 ~ 8:30 p.m. June 1 ~ July 6 Students will be working with Myrtle and Charles Fillmore s interpretation of healing and wholeness, as well as historical and contemporary master teachers. Required Texts: How to Let God Help You and The Healing Letters by Myrtle Fillmore, Christian Healing and Jesus Christ Heals by Charles Fillmore. We have a few copies of each book that can be borrowed for class. Also, students will keep a personal journal. 8 PAGE 8 IN UNISON JUNE 2016 UNITY IN THE OLYMPICS: 50 Years in the Making by Alice Alexander and Jan Wyman In November, 1994, Barbara Jescke came to take the reins of Unity in the Olympics. She was from Moline, Illinois and was a 1989 graduate of Unity Ministerial School at Unity Village. Her 13-year tenure at UITO could be characterized as an era of stability and spiritual growth. There were always a variety of activities taking place at UITO during those years. Summers were celebrated with barbecues and an annual picnic where the beach towel water balloon toss became a tradition. The Northwest Unity Retreat at Crystal Mountain was attended every year. UITO hosted an Ecology Fair that, among other things, featured one of the first Prius hybrid cars. We hosted many teas including one to honor UITO pioneers. We had book studies on non-violent communication, prayer, peacemaking and conflict resolution. Halloween parties, an active Mastermind group, vision board get-togethers - UITO was a happening place. During that time, we also had the Community Welcome to UITO! Room re-roofed. We installed energy efficient windows in the offices and classrooms, and painted the exterior. While at UITO, Barbara met and married Jesse Wilson. Jesse was instrumental in several projects around the church including the remodeling of the minister s office to cover the paneling with a fresh coat of yellow paint and to upgrade the lighting. MANNA (Ministries Assisting Neighbors in Need with Agape) was formed by the ecumenical community in Port Angeles during that time, and Barbara was one of the premier volunteers. She was also One of many Crystal Mountain Retreats active in homeless youth programs. As a very dedicated member of Unity Northwest Region, Barbara held many positions over the years and became the Northwest Regional Representative after leaving UITO. While serving at UITO, Barbara was approached by the Peninsula Daily News to write articles for their Issues of Faith column and continues to do so to this day. She and Jesse have retired here in Port Angeles. She is a guest speaker here occasionally and can often be seen out walking her beloved puppies. Thank you Barbara for encouraging and facilitating our journey inward to Christ consciousness.
