1 Volume 1 Issue 5 September/October 2014 Unity Celebrates 21st Annual World Day of Prayer By Pat Dunkin O n Thursday September 11, 2014 at 7:00PM, Unity by the Shore will unite with other Unity churches and centers around the world in our sacred World Day of Prayer. Thousands of people will join Silent Unity our 24/7 prayer ministry for the 21st annual Unity World Day of Prayer. The theme of the 24-hour prayer event is We Are the Light of the World: Let Your Light Shine! World Day of Prayer gives us an opportunity to come together in celebration of our oneness with God, each other, and our world. Through prayer we foster peace and wholeness in our community and in our individual lives. We will pray for continued healing for those who lost loved ones on September 11, 2001 and we will pray for peace in the Middle East. The 24-hour prayer vigil at Unity Village will begin on the evening of Wednesday, September 10, and continue through Thursday, September 11. We invite you to join in this sacred prayer activity by lighting a candle and reserving a part of each day to prayer and meditation, then join with us at our church at 7:00PM. The theme We Are the Light of the World: Let Your Light Shine! will be visibly expressed at Unity by the Shore with 100 candles being lit. According to Rev. Lynne Brown, vice president of Silent Unity, The 24-hour prayer vigil traditionally begins with a beautiful candlelight walk across our central courtyard. This year, for the first time, we will symbolize the power of our united prayers by asking people everywhere to light a virtual candle at The candles will be displayed as points of light on a global map. The virtual candle lighting experience will continue through September 11. Prayer request forms are available in the back of the church. Please fill in the requests and deposit them in the specially marked prayer box. Those requests collected by Sunday September 7 will be sent directly to Silent Unity for prayer during the events at Unity Village. Those collected after that date will be included in our Prayer then sent to Silent Unity the next day. 4 A Message from the Board President, Angela Denton hat a glorious summer we have had! I hope you have taken W advantage of the great weather this summer and have enjoyed time out to rest and play in Mother Nature. As the magnificent days of summer come to an end, know that the jewels of autumn await you in the coming days. As we let go of warm temperate days spent at the beach and at backyard barbeques enjoying watermelon, burgers, and corn on the cob we look forward to hay rides, apple cider, and pumpkin pie. During the fall months, many look forward to taking in a movie or two. As key individuals like Steve Duglosz are in the process of replacing a broken lap top and installing new cables to ensure a strong wireless connection in our sanctuary, the Board of Trustees is planning a celebratory unveiling event for our community. The evening will include short inspirational photo stories and a movie selected from Spiritual Cinema Circle. Look for the event announcement in September. Update on August Happenings At the end of August the Board had received blue prints for classroom and fellowship building expansion from architect, Steve Bias. The Board has submitted several questions on the expansion plans and we await his reply and an opportunity to meet with him. Also occurring in the month of August was our second aura photo day hosted by Hues of You. It was a successful event, and I would like to thank all individuals who came out to support the event. Material will be supplied at a nominal cost and a love offering for the church will be collected. Please join Mary Phillips and Pat Dunkin for a fun day, a day to unlock your inner creativity and release your cares. How often do we fret and worry and hang on to our current concern? Whether it is finances, a personal issue, a concern about our family and friends or even the world situation, our negative thought can have a negative impact on it. Worry never solved any problem. In Unity we borrowed a slogan from our friends in 12 Step programs, Let go and Let God. We even change that slogan to Let God and Let Go. Nonetheless, we seem to believe that if we hang on to the worry we will find a solution. How much better and easier would it be if we put our faith into action and actually Let Go and Let God work out the solution for us? Ritual and symbols have an important place in spirituality; if we do something with intent it has more impact on us. Over thirty years ago my life was a mess and I couldn t fix it. I learned that I had to release all my cares to God and trust that Divine order would prevail. 4

5 A friend suggested that I create a God Box and use it whenever I had a problem or concern. I created a God Box and wrote all my concerns down. Unfortunately, I was unable to just leave them in God s hands. When I next complained to my friends about a situation she asked if I had put it in my God Box. Of course I did, but God has chosen to not fix it. No, She replied, You have chosen to take it back. Go to your God Box and remove what you wrote on that piece of paper. I did as I was told. When you are ready, truly ready, to release that to God, then write it on a new piece of paper and put it in your God Box. Whenever you think of it, just affirm, I have placed it in God s hands and all is in Divine Order. When I am ready to let go of any situation and allow God to do God s job, then all I have to do is my job, affirm the truth. In a 2010 study researchers found that participants could alleviate feelings of regret or failure by physically sealing up materials associated with bad experiences in a box or an envelope. When someone is distracted by a worrying thought, it can use up mental resources, the researcher reports. It doesn t let you focus on whatever else you re working on with 100 per cent devotion of energy. Once those worries are filed away out of sight, however, they re also out of mind. God Boxes do that they basically psychologically distance [anxieties] away. (Source: The Globe & Mail, May 27, 2012) Connecting to Spirit Through Three-Column Prayer by Bill Grau here was a time when the term informal prayer conjured up such confusion and terror that I T figured I d just skip it-it was just too much pressure. So I stuck with formal prayers like The Lord s Prayer or The Prayer of St. Francis. The first time I called, Silent Unity, Unity Worldwide s Prayer Ministry, I was moved by the beauty and structure of their informal prayers. Rev. Stretton Smith, who created the 4T Prosperity Program coined the phrase Three-Column Prayer to describe this method of prayer. Rev. Smith says that Silent Unity has practiced the Three-Column Prayer for over 100 years. The prayers are composed of three simple sections. In column one, we note the aspect of God that we re trying to bring forth. It will vary depending on the purpose of the prayer. For example: Divine Love, the prospering power of God, the power of God s healing light...etc. In the second column, we state the location of God. Like: within, about, before and beside. The third column is the what. What is our desired result for the prayer? We may ask for divine order, healing, guidance, prosperity or any number of things. With this simple system we can instantly create a prayer for any situation. An example of a threecolumn prayer that we say each week is: Divine love, through me, blesses and increases all that I give, all that I receive, and all that I am. We also may want to give thanks before or after we say a three-column prayer. An example of a healing prayer that I ve used is: The power and the presence of God, within me, is healing and changing my old thoughts, my old beliefs, my old feelings, my old actions, and my old reactions. My comfort, my happiness and my love come from this power within. I am thankful for all of these blessings. Amen. 5
