3 THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JULY 1, 2018 A Big Thank You and Hearty Congrats, Fr. Brad... the New Prior! The Lord delights in you (Isaiah 62:4) Peace to all, My dear brothers and sisters, as Fr. Brad concludes his ministry here at the parish as Weekend Celebrant on July 1, I, together with each of you, take this opportunity to thank God for the wonderful gift of the son of this soil Fr. Brad, our son, our brother and the Lord s anointed one. Fr. Brad is the first priest from this parish (OLOL) since it was established as a parish in He is a great blessing to the world, the Church, St. Norbert Abbey, our parish family, and his own family. As you all know, Fr. Brad grew up here in this place, and he responded to God s calling to be a Norbertine priest to serve the Lord in His people. Thank you, Fr. Brad, for your joyful response to God s call. We are all so proud of you! Fr. Brad has been our Weekend Celebrant for the past two years. I have had the privilege of serving this parish with Fr. Brad, and it has been a blessing in my life as well. The last year especially was wonderful for me as Fr. Brad was of great assistance to my ministry here in the parish. Fr. Brad, you have been a great blessing to the people of OLOL. I, on behalf of the parishioners, gratefully acknowledge your contributions to this parish through the holiness of your life and ministry for the past two years. We appreciate all that you have been to us until this date, and we look forward to receiving your service and inspiration in the years to come. You are always welcome and much needed in this place to build up this community of God s people. You are indeed very much a part of this Parish Family! We are aware that the new assignment that you are entrusted with by St. Norbert Abbey is a very serious and noble ministry to serve as the Prior of St. Norbert Abbey. Though you are very young to take on the important office of the Canonry, we are sure that by God s grace you will do well in this responsibility as prior and in serving the Church in De Pere and Green Bay. May the Holy Spirit always grant you wisdom to serve the St. Norbert Abbey and every ministry related to the abbey. The Word of God reminds you that, Let no one have contempt for your youth, but set an example for those who believe in speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity...do not neglect the gift you have, which was conferred on you through the prophetic word, with the imposition of hands, of the presbyterate. (1 Timothy 4:12-14) Your holiness of life, simplicity of lifestyle, and inspiring homilies have been a great witness to the Gospel of Christ here at Lourdes. Thank you for all that you have been to the people of this parish family. May you be guided by the Holy Spirit to lead a holy life and fulfill God s holy will in your new responsibility as the Prior of St. Norbert Abbey. Our prayers are always for you and with you. You are so precious to each of us in this place. I wish to extend a special thank you to all who contributed their time and service to make Fr. Brad s farewell Mass and social a meaningful and joyful event, especially Jody, our Director of Music & Liturgy, the choir members, the Worship Committee members who did the serving in the Social Hall, and Carol, our business manager, who made all the arrangements for the day. Also special thanks to Joe Draves, our parish trustee, who made the presentation on behalf of the parish family, and all of you my people who willingly came to thank God for the gift of Fr. Brad and share the joy with him. God bless you Father Brad. A big thank you and all the best! God bless everyone. Our Lady of Lourdes, pray for us. Meet the Sacristans Marlene Mapes Marlene Mapes has lived in De Pere since She was born in a little city called Alma by the Mississippi River. Marlene is a charter member of Our Lady of Lourdes, having first been a member of St. Boniface. Marlene has five children, eleven grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren. She retired from Montgomery Ward in 1995 after 20 years, working in the office, as an appliance salesperson, and finally as the manager of 11 departments. In her free time, Marlene loves to travel, do anything outdoors, and play cards. She is also an active volunteer in the community. She had never considered becoming a sacristan, but when Fr. Conrad asked her, Marlene gave it some thought and said, why not? It is another way to serve the Lord and a privilege, she says. In addition to her sacristan duties, Marlene is a lector, a Eucharistic minister, takes communion to shut-ins on First Friday, purchases food for the De Pere Christian Outreach Food Pantry, and oversees the delivery of poinsettias to nursing homes and shut-ins at Christmas. She also served on the Pastoral Council for many years. When asked what she enjoys most about being part of the OLOL Parish Family, Marlene says, The parishioners at OLOL are the most caring and giving people. They are friendly and kind to each other and helpful in so many ways. Spiritually, it is top class. It s a pleasure to be with them. Symbols of Baptism Third in a series of articles on the sacrament of baptism by Deacon Mike There are many signs and symbols in the Sacrament of Baptism. Some of the symbols are easily recognized and the meaning is obvious, while others are seen but not readily recognized as a symbol and the meaning is not very obvious. Here are a few of the symbols and what they mean. Sign of the Cross: A sign on something shows its origins or ownership. The Sign of the Cross is the mark of Christians because Jesus Christ died on the cross. Parents and godparents trace it on the child s forehead to show that the baby belongs to Christ, who now offers his help and grace to face and overcome the sufferings of life. Water: Water is the most visible symbol of the Baptism Rite. Water is for cleansing and is a sign that our sins are washed away. Baptism cleanses us of original sin with which we are all born and, in the baptism of adults, of every sin committed prior to baptism. Water is also necessary for life and so is a sign, too, that the life of the risen Christ is ours. Oils: Oil of baptism is olive oil rubbed on the breast of the baby, just as athletes used to rub themselves with oil to strengthen and prepare for the fight ahead. Oil of chrism is a mixture of olive oil and balsam (sweet-smelling ointment) and is rubbed on the crown of the head. It is a sign of sealing with the gifts of the Holy Spirit. The profession of faith which the parents make on behalf of their child at baptism will later be confirmed personally by their child in the sacrament of confirmation when oil of chrism will be used again. The oils are blessed by the bishop in our diocese on the Tuesday during Holy Week. White Garment: This garment is a relic of the new clothes worn by Christians after baptism in the first centuries. It is a sign of innocence and the new life of resurrection. A white garment called a pall is placed on the casket when the death of someone is celebrated, also a reminder of our new life with Christ. Candles: The candle symbolizes Christ as the Light of the World. The baptismal candle is lit from the paschal (Easter) Candle, which stands near the baptismal font as a sign of the risen Christ. The baptismal candle reminds us that the light of Christ has entered the child s life; and its flame symbolizes the flame of faith which is to be kept burning brightly through the life of the child. Baptismal Register: The baby s baptism will be recorded in the parish Baptismal Register. In the years ahead, proof of baptism may be obtained in the form of a certificate issued on the basis of this registration. The child s confirmation, marriage or ordination will also be noted alongside this entry in the register. Next week: How do we go about getting our child baptized? 5
