1 A Recipe from Tennie Brisket with wine We have recently rediscovered the melting pleasure of well-cooked brisket. This recipe is best done in the pressure cooker but would also work with the same ingredients in a low oven or in the slow cooker, if you give it enough time, say about 5 hours. It comes from a Jamie Oliver magazine (thanks, Karen!) Ingredients 2 tablespoons oil 1.5 kg rolled brisket 12 shallots 6 garlic cloves 1 tin of tomatoes 2 tablespoons tomato puree 250 ml red wine 2 bay leaves 1 cinnamon stick nutmeg, grated handful of black olives oregano thyme 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar Brown the beef in oil in the pressure cooker and remove. Simmer the olives and garlic in the oil for about 10 minutes. Add all the other ingredients, with half a tin full of water, let it boil and thicken. Add the brisket, put the lid on and shut the valve. Cook under pressure for 75 minutes. Release the valve and, once it has stopped hissing, remove the lid. Leave the beef to rest for 10 minutes and then serve with mashed potatoes and vegetables of your choice or a salad. Jackdaw Chatter 31

4 A Book to die for! Today we take an English version of the Bible for granted. It was not always so! In 1408, it was declared an offence punishable by death to translate anything from the Latin Bible into English. Why? Because both Church and State were afraid of what might happen if ordinary people were able to read all of God s word for themselves in their own language, rather than simply hearing in Latin the interpretations the Church wanted them to hear. Recently I watched a TV programme about the life of William Tyndale. He determined that the common people of England should have a Bible in their own tongue. He vowed that the common ploughboy would know more of the Bible than the pompous clerics of the Church. In 1524 he was forced to flee from England, but devoted the rest of his life, first to translating and publishing the New Testament. Later he began work on the Old Testament, which he never completed. Copies of his work were smuggled into the country in various ingenious ways, and to be found in possession of one could result in torture and death. The same situation can still be found in some countries today! On one occasion, the Bishop of London burned 6,000 copies of Tyndale s New Testament on the steps of St. Paul s Cathedral. William Tyndale was himself burned at the stake in 1536 in Belgium. He was only 42, but he had changed the course of English history and profoundly influenced English language and culture. 6 Church News The Annual Carol Service on Dec 21st attracted a very full congregation. With the church decorated in holly, ivy and flowers, and by only the light of candles, the whole service took on a happy festive atmosphere. All the carols were sung lustily and various people from the village read the lessons. Lynn, Dianne and Shirley had provided tea and cakes afterwards for everyone. This year each street had decorated a Christmas tree, and these were all on display for the congregation to judge by putting 10p into the jar of the one considered the best. Final judging would be after the benefice service. 8.00am Christmas morning December 25th saw the hardy few turn out for a very pleasant communion service. Even a couple of visiting Americans were welcomed and enhanced the collection plate with a few dollars. Benefice Communion Dec 28th This service was attended by villagers from the five parishes in our benefice. Sue Giles took the service. Tea and biscuits were provided by Jean and Karen, while all helped to finally judge the Christmas trees. Albert Road won with a charming and topical display of first world war trenches and carols both German and English. Second was Vicarage Meadow where Vicky and Karen had asked 26 children from the street to each decorate an angel for display on the tree. A total of 61 was collected and sent to the Blue smile children s charity. Ely diocese meeting January 25th This meeting took place at Chippenham, where the arch Deacon told those present of the delicate state of the church in both the diocese and the country. It is likely that 40% of the vicars and lay preachers in the country will retire in the next 5 years and there are very few taking up the vocation. The Jackdaw Chatter 36

7 average age of people in the country is 35, but the average age of congregations is 69. Each church in the Diocese struggles each year to pay ongoing costs, and yet last year, somehow, congregations in the Ely diocese found 3.5 million to carry out major repairs. With all these fine old church buildings ageing this figure is likely to be required each year. Easter Sunday April 5th will be a communion service at 8.00am using the Book of Common Prayer. This will be followed by the annual Vestry meeting, where the Church Warden for 2015 will be elected. All those wishing to be considered for this post should add their names (with proposers and seconders) to the notice in the church porch. Quy Annual PCC Meeting Wednesday 15th April. This will be in the Hut at 7.30pm, when the PCC committee and sidesmen for the coming year are elected. There will also be annual reports from the vicar, Churchwarden and church treasurer. Benefice Annual Meeting Tuesday April 21st This will be in Swaffham Bulbeck school hall, when Sue will explain the mission of the benefice for the coming year, and seek out ways in which we can encourage people back into the churches. The Easter Appeal for Quy church A letter for this will appear through your door around Easter time. We have always had a good response to this appeal, and all the money goes towards the running and upkeep of our church, which we cannot get below 200 per week. There are no reserves for any large repairs which could occur. Rogation Sunday 10th May This will be a special service, probably in Bill s barn. Last year we included a pet service which was well received, but a dog show is being considered for this year. Watch out for posters. Church Fete Sat July 18th This will follow the normal pattern with games afterwards. We would like to see as many of you there as possible for this great afternoon and evening s entertainment. Orchard Street with my husband Matt (although if this doesn t go out until spring there should be a tiny new person joining us) What do you do? I m a Teacher What is the best thing about living in Quy? There is always someone to smile at you when you re out for a walk around the village. And I love the fact that when I talk about any of the village events at work the response is always "I want to live in your village"! What s your favourite food and drink? Anything that Matt has cooked! Probably my favourite thing is his chicken Kievs or miso soup with duck and broccoli. Favourite drink - having not had alcohol in over a year, I guess that I miss gin and tonic most; at the moment it s either steaming hot or ice cold milk. What s the best holiday you have ever had? Backpacking in Shetland - it was so wild and beautiful and the people so friendly Do you have any hobbies? making things out of clay with my amazing neighbour on a Tuesday night, reading when I have the time and haven t fallen asleep, allotmenting Have you read any books recently that you would recommend? "Before I go to sleep" was really gripping. I have also just about finished listening to the audiobooks of the Anne of Green Gables series to help me sleep at night What words of wisdom or top tips can you give the readers... 9 Welcome to Quy Anyone who moves into the village is sent a card with some useful information about the village and what goes on. We thought it would be worthwhile reproducing some of it here. We would like to welcome you to our village, and hope that you will have a long and happy association with it. Formally we are known as "Stow cum Quy", but more generally as "Quy" (never Stow!!) One thing we are very proud of is the community spirit we have managed to maintain, even though we are situated so close to Cambridge. As well as living in the village we do hope that you will wish to join in the community, as so many other newcomers have done and enjoyed it. There are many places where you can walk in the village, both on public footpaths and other areas where we are permitted to go by a very obliging land owner. There are two pubs in the centre of the village The Swan and The Wheatsheaf. These both serve good food, good beer, and friendliness. There is also Quy Mill Hotel, and "The Missing Sock" (used to be The Prince Albert), on the outskirts of the village. The hotel has 40 bedrooms and is licensed for weddings. We have a good village shop-cum-post Office where you can be assured of good service, from Prad Zala and his family. We are lucky to have many groups that meet in the Village Hall. All welcome new members so please feel free to contact them either direct or ring me and I will be more than happy to give you any info that you need. There is also a horse racing evening, Ceilidh, Halloween Walk, carol singing and Rounders to name but a few. Details of all events are posted in the Notice Boards around the village.
