The Outlook Central Presbyterian Church 402 N College Street Waxahachie, TX August 2017 There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens. Ecclesiastes 3:1 One day it s summer time. Sweet summer time. Long hot days, sipping sweet tea and watching fireflies at dusk. Days spent wondering what you re going to do and who you re going to do it with. School and schedules may cross your mind, but only briefly and then you re pulled back in the sweet days of summer. You flip your calendar, and suddenly summer seems like a distant memory and your to do list is quickly filling up. The start of a new school year. No matter your season in life, the start of a school year impacts you. Change is inevitable. Long days sipping sweet tea turn into long hot practices on the football field followed by a quick chug of Gatorade. Watching fireflies turns into watching your elementary age grandchildren get off the school bus and come inside for a bowl of ice cream before helping them with their homework. They need to be ready for mom or dad to pick them up after work. Wondering what you re going to do turns into wondering how you re going to get it all done. This season is quickly approaching and changing seasons is one of the many things that make up our life. My motto is live your life and embrace the changes. You can t stop it from happening, so you might as well hop on and enjoy the ride. God gives us seasons for a reason. Different seasons not only prepare us for what s ahead but they give us great memories to remind us of where we ve been. Some seasons come and go without us hardly even noticing, some are harder than others, some more challenging and some are more rewarding. But ALL the seasons are important and make up who we are. So as we flip our calendars and eagerly wait for this next season to happen, remember that this season is a gift and it has a place and purpose in our lives. For everything there is a season. Annette Goss DCE Season Past!
The session discussed the status of its two top priorities for this year: envisioning what the church will look like in the year 2020, and expanding and revitalizing the youth program. The clerk gave updates on the positive progress to archive church records and update the church roll. CPC has about 200 members. The session discussed a proposal to gradually reduce the size of the session to nine members over three years but opted instead to keep the size of the board at 12. (The session will officially be at 12 next year after completing a three-year reduction from 15 members.) Session members expressed joy over a report of the large number of events at the church this year, including bring-a-dish lunches, Wednesday Night Fellowships, VBS dinners, award ceremonies and other community events, along with church fund-raisers. Session commendations: Highlights from the June15th Stated Session meeting: Patty Dickerson, Glinda Felty, Ellen Hays and Mack Fountaine for their tireless work on the church archives project. Letitia Rutan for her constant diligence in shopping for many of the church s needed supplies and making sure paper goods and other items are well stocked. Susie Sambell for her outstanding work on church communications. Mike Tull and Bobby McMillian who battled the Texas heat to do a much-needed re-striping of the church parking lot. Winnie O Donnell for her patience with the VBS kids! The children were blessed. The whole church for supporting the pancake breakfast for Haiti! Weekly News Are you missing your weekly news update? Check your junk mail. We moved to a different format back in May, and it may not be going to your inbox. If you need more assistance, please contact Susie Sambell at cpcwaxnews@gmail.com Gathering Music Submitted by Cheryl Arey Each Sunday during the last few minutes before the sounding of the hour, music is provided for a time of quieting of our hearts in order to prepare for Worship. Thank you to all the people who are sharing their talents to God s glory during this time. Thank you. The Other Income is unfavorable to budget YTD mainly due to the timing of Wedding season (this should catch up this Summer and Fall). Also, Oil prices are down, placing pressure on Royalty income. As can be seen above, the main driver of income is Pledges. Thank you to everyone for their faithfulness in pledging.
Happy Birthday to everyone that has an August birthday. May your day be blessed. Men's Fellowship Breakfast Taking a Summer Breather With the dog days of summer and vacation season upon us, the Men s Breakfast is going to take a short break. We will return in September. That s right, the next time we get back together, we ll be talking about Jesus AND football! August, 2017 Music Notes Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness; come into his presence with singing. Psalm 100 As I write this I am reflecting on the Texas Choral Convention Directors Convention I recently attended. I always pick up some new ideas and music at this gathering. The have a number of activities and discussion sessions focused on the church musician. We get to discuss our problems and our successes as well as share ideas with one another. These are invaluable to me, and I thank the church for allowing me to attend. A highlight this time was a session titled Ten Things Your Pastor Would Like to Tell You and Ten Things You Would Like to Tell Your Pastor. There were only two pastors in the room full of choir directors. No blood was spilled. August tends to get busy as the school year draws close. The choir has resumed rehearsing after our summer break. We have a few seats left in the loft, we would love to fill. As always, no audition or solos required. Just a desire to praise the Lord in music. See you Sunday. Michael God loves us as we are, but much too much to leave us there. William Sloane Coffin, in Credo T h e outlook
Give-a-Meal-a-Month the Yellow Bags Remember to shop for Give-A-Meal-A-Month in August. Kids who usually get breakfast and lunch at school are home during the summer and they are hungry! In fact almost half of the children in our community experience food insecurity so we ve picked kid-friendly items this month. These are some items kids really love. Please continue to help with the cause of alleviating hunger as a Hunger Action Congregation. Please consider continuing your support of the Yellow Bags. Take your kids or grandkids and let them experience personal mission or just do it yourself. Thank you for your help in past months and keep this important personal mission project in your thoughts and prayers. Your ministry will help many people. Give a Meal a Month Menu for August 2017 Canned pasta and meat such as Chef Boyardee or Campbells Canned peas and carrots Canned pineapple Jello Optional items may always be included such as Milk, Jelly, Fruit Juice, etc. Checks are always welcome payable to CPC, memo to CARE. Coffee & Cookies Fellowship Time Starting at 10:35 Come to the Parlor between Sunday School and Church and visit with fellow members and greet our guests each Sunday m o r n i n g. I f y o u h a v e suggestions on how we can make this time even better, please feel free to let a member of the Worship Team know. By: Cheryl Arey Nominating Committee Soon the Nominating Committee will begin to meet to prayerfully consider those who will be nominated to serve on the Session for the Class of Please keep this committee in your prayers and return the nomination forms that will be presented in morning service early this Fall. Is God calling you to serve in this capacity? Are you willing to serve the members of God s family in love and dedication? Pray and God will lead you if you are willing to listen to his still, small voice. Cheryl Arey, Nominating Committee Chair
Candles During Worship- Why? The lighting of the candles each Sunday- Why do we include this as part of our worship? Jesus said: I am the light of the world (John 8:12). The presence of the light reminds us of Jesus coming into our world and into our lives. The light is carried into the worship service as a symbol of Jesus coming into our presence as we worship. Many congregations use two candles to signify Jesus as a human being and as God. At the end of the service, the light is carried out into the world to show that the light of Jesus Christ is for all people everywhere. Carrying out the light reminds us to use His light in the world to serve Him. The light being carried out into the world was once included in our service. The worship team would like to include this in our services once again. So in the near future be looking for this meaningful ritual to be reinstated to enhance our worship of God. Submitted by Cheryl Arey, Worship Team Leader. July 2017 The Marthas Submitted by Priscilla Clore The Marthas small group met Saturday, July 8th at 8:30 a.m. in the parlor at CPC for breakfast, a brief meeting, and our project for the day: entering recipes into the web site for our church cookbook. Priscilla offered a meditation based on a creation story from Genesis in the Old Testament, and the creation story from the New Testament, the Gospel of John, parts of Chapter One, followed by prayer. We rejoiced to see Deborah McMillian walk into the parlor, having driven herself for the first time. Welcome back, Deborah we missed you. After entering several recipes from those present, those turned in by members, and some into the Cherished from the Past section, we agreed that we will meet in August to enter more recipes. Recipes can be entered directly into the web site or submitted to the office, placed into a recipe box in the front pew of the sanctuary, or a recipe box in the parlor. Forms were distributed at the July 2 nd picnic and are also available from the church office. Please contact a Martha for assistance if needed we have the know how, now! Mary Jo, Dee, and Deborah will make muffins for the welcome bags for new members. Each freezer bag will contain six muffins and a note from the congregation welcoming them to worship. This is a change from the bread previously offered. Mary Jo and Priscilla will host the breakfast in August.
Love books? Love Kids? Love Books AND Kids? CPC now has 5 Little Libraries around town and we need a volunteer (or two) to be sure they are stocked with books. We have plenty of donated books right now, so it's just a matter of checking them when you are going around town on your normal business. If you can help, please let me know. Blessings. Patty Dickerson pdickerson1@gmail.co OPERATION FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL It s hard to believe but it is time to start thinking about how we can help Waxahachie s Operation First Day of School. Last year we provided bottles of glue to hand out to all students in WISD who needed assistance with obtaining needed supplies. This year we have been asked to supply 1,500 GLUE STICKS. That sounds like a lot, but if we start now, I believe we can do it! Our deadline is August 3 rd. There will be collection boxes set up in the undercroft and narthex! We will also need volunteers to help distribute the school supplies on August 5 th. If you would like to help, please contact Annette Goss at gossannetteg@aol.com. Discipleship and Education BLESSING OF THE BACKPACKS and 3 RD GRADE BIBLE PRESENTATION during morning worship on Sunday, August 20 th followed by a CHURCH WIDE BRING-A-DISH LUNCHEON HOSTED BY THE ANDREWS CLASS HONORING ALL OUR WONDERFUL CHURCH VOLUNTEERS!!

My Little Pantry Submitted by: Patty Dickerson What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, Go in peace, be warmed and filled, without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. But someone will say, You have faith and I have works. Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. James 2: My Little Pantry is open! Thanks to Jim and Karl Goss and the Second Saturday mission team for building and installing our newest neighborhood ministry! Take what you need Leave what you Can is the message of our little pantry located next to the clothing and household goods recycle bin on Jackson Street, across from the church office. Here is a list of suggested items, but use your imagination. Single service eating utensils, for example, are very handy for people in need. Overflow will be stored in the storeroom by Annette s office.if the pantry is full when you donate, you can leave items there! Food Baby needs Personal Needs Peanut butter Diapers Hand soap Canned fruit, veggies, protein, soup Wipes, diaper cream Toothbrushes and toothpaste Granola bars School supplies Deodorant Dry Pasta, beans Pens, highlighters, crayons, Bars of soap Crackers markers Toilet tissue and Kleenex Cereal Household items Socks Coffee, tea, water Dish soap Please no used or open goods; glass, harsh cleaning chemicals, expired food, food prepared at home or food without labels.

Both are headed up by Winnie O Donnell with assistance from Kary Meade on weddings and Larry & Glinda Felty, and Kary Meade on funerals. The committees stand by ready to assist any member of the church. Sign up for CPC updates and reminders by by contacting: cpcwaxnews@gmail.com. Follow CPCWAX on Twitter CPC Recycles! Please use the bins for plastic and cans downstairs in the undercroft. We recycle paper in the church office and bulletins and hand-outs after services in the bin on the front pew. Also, this is a good time to clean out at home - recycle clothing, shoes and household items in the blue bin across the street from the office. CPC receives $.12/pound and the items go to needy families around the Metroplex. Too many toys after Christmas? Share with others by recycling at CPC! Remember your children's book donations, too. There's a donation box in the cottage. We support four Little Libraries around town. Thanks for all your efforts to care for our earth. Earth Care Congregation Ministry Team SENIOR SERVICE We talked about occasional maintenance or repair needs senior members of our congregation have around the house or yard and right away, the Second Saturday Service ministry team stepped up to offer helping hands. Please call me at ( ) or me (pdickerson1@gmail.com) with a list of chores you need help with to get on their schedule. A representative from that group will contact you to set up a date. All are welcome to participate in this service opportunity and meet some very special members of our church. ~Patty Dickerson Are you still receiving the CPC Monthly Newsletter, The Outlook, by mail?
