1 BARROW UPON TRENT PARISH NEWS NOVEMBER Sale and Davys Playgroup settle in to their new surroundings Almost halfway into the new school term, Sale and Davys Playgroup are settling into their new environment well. After much hard work from all involved and some amazing support from the people of the village, it is business as usual for the group, who meet Monday to Thursday 9am 11.35am in the Village Hall. A huge thank you must go to the village hall committee, who have been incredibly accommodating and supportive throughout the move. As well as transporting the toys, tables, chairs and educational materials into their new homes, work has been completed inside and out. A secure and safe outdoor play area has been created to the side of the building enabling the children some much needed run-around space. Inside, new pegs for coats and bags, more storage and safety features have been added. Work is still on going, to create a focal point for the children s amazing art and craft work. This term, the children are learning All about ME through play activities; covering some of the festivals people enjoy all around the world. During Harvest week the importance of caring for our land and growing food was the focus. On Thursday the children celebrated their own Harvest by coming into playgroup dressed as farmers and bringing in decorated harvest boxes. 0 boxes were presented to St Wilfrid s Church during the Harvest Festival on Sunday 13th October and the Padley Centre gratefully received their donations, along with the generous offerings from the rest of the Village. mixed emotions for colts Saturday Colts remain top of Division one having taken maximum points out of the opening 5 games having beaten local rivals Melbourne 3-1 at home, 3 points away at Ilkeston and another 3 against A.D.A.S.C. at the Community park after a 5-3 victory. The only blemish on our record is getting knocked out of the cup at this early stage which is so disappointing considering we reached the Final last season after being beat 3 nil by A.D.A.S.C. away, our biggest defeat for our Saturday team ever and the first game The Colts have failed to scored in, it was just a bad day at the office. Sunday Colts sit 3rd in Division one on Sundays having only played 3 league games, two against our biggest rivals Belper Town after our 4-1 Victory at home against Belper Sunday Colts visited Duffield and had a comfortable 5 nil victory, we then travelled away to Belper who needed to win and that s what they did, after a great game of football from two very Brailsford Ploughing Match good sides the score ended with a 4- Victory for Belper Town. Sunday Colts however bounced back from the defeat at Belper to get through to the 1/4 finals of the Cup with a 8 nil victory at Sandiacre Town to earn a place in the next round against FC Redwood of Sinfin which the Colts Won 5 nil, Yes 5 nil! So lets hope the Sunday team can bring some Cup glory to the Village this season. Some of them are so short, that it is easy to overlook them or think that you have heard them before. I believe that Jesus intended us to keep meditating upon his parables until their meaning becomes part of our life and our being, part of who we are. (This incidentally is one of the themes of the book I am planning to write next year during my 3 month sabbatical.) Take the Parable of the Mustard Seed, for instance, and note the context in which it is told: The apostles said to the Lord, Increase our faith! And the Lord said, If you had faith as a grain of mustard seed, you could say to this sycamore tree, Be rooted up, and be planted in the sea, and it would obey you. (Luke ) Before you read on, you might wish to take a few minutes to read over those two verses and let them sink into your mind and heart. The disciples came to Jesus asking them to increase their faith! Perhaps they had taken to heart the number of times that Jesus had said to them, Oh you of little faith! Like us, they were painfully aware of how feeble and weak was their ability to trust in God and they wished with all their hearts that they had more faith. Increase our faith Lord! We misunderstand Jesus parables, which are often full of thoughtprovoking overstatement, if we think he is encouraging us to do impossible things, like transplanting a tree into the sea. Rather 3 Wednesday 13 th November 9.30 a.m. Holy Communion Sunday 17 th November nd before Advent a.m. Holy Communion Celebrant: Paul Hygate a.m. Morning Prayer Led by: Sylvia Fox Sunday 4 th November Christ the King a.m. Worship for All 3.00 pm Holy Communion & Led by the Team Baptism 1.00 Baptism Celebrant: Paul Hygate 9.00 a.m. Holy Communion Celebrant: Tony Luke Sunday 1 st December Advent am St.Andrew s Tide Patronal Festival Holy Communion Celebrant: Paul Hygate Jesus emphasis is on our faith being as big as a grain of mustard seed. It is as though Jesus is saying to the disciples and to us, Yes, your faith is small. But it s not the size of your faith which really matters. The mustard seed shows us that size isn t everything! Why? Because it s not about us, but about God. What is required from us is not great faith, but rather faith in a great God. Faith therefore becomes a sort of window through which we glimpse the immense majesty of God. Whether that window is a small peep-hole or a massive plate glass window, it is the same God who is glimpsed through it. In fact, paradoxically, the smaller the window the less likely we are to jump up and down, pointing to ourselves and saying, Look at me, haven t I got great faith! It s not about you, says Jesus, but about God. We should rather be saying, What a great God! How blessed are we that he has given us just a glimpse of who he is! I have been very challenged by this parable. It s very tempting for us all, even clergy, when we are chasing around doing lots of things, to believe that it is all about us. Look what I m doing for God! I bet God s glad he s got me. Where would he be without me? That s all very well, but eventually we will come up against something which is simply too big for us, something which seems to us impossible. Because we have been relying so much on our own efforts, we will feel an utter failure, we will be at the end of our tether. Perhaps that is what Jesus was meaning by the crazy picture of the tree needing to be cast into the sea. We cannot do it! Like the camel through the eye of a needle in another of Jesus short parables, it s just impossible. Jesus invites us to face up to this truth; that on our own we have hit a brick wall or reached rock bottom. Faith invites us to turn a corner and tell ourselves, It s not about me. It s about God. To God be the glory!

4 news from sale and davys ce primary school Sale and Davys School was very excited to have been invited to the Brailsford Ploughing Match which took place on Wednesday the nd October. Children from Griffon Class attended the event along with two parent helpers, Mrs Fenlon and myself. We arrived at the Atkin s fields at about 9.30pm and although the weather was rather wet, this didn t dampen the children s enthusiasm. Griffon Class were fascinated by the shire horses, the vintage tractors and the farm animals. After lunch the Competition tent was opened and the children were very interested in looking at the enormous vegetables, cakes and art work. We were delighted to discover that two of Sale and Davys Children had won prizes; one for the Friendship bracelet competition and one for the Pasta necklace competition. We arrived back at school at about.00pm having had an educational and thoroughly enjoyable day. Sale and Davys harvest festival took place on October 11th and once again the children and parents produced some wonderful harvests gifts for this event. Every Class took part in the service which was based on Harvests in the Past and Harvests Today. The children enjoyed reading out their ploughing match reports and performing poems. The new Reception children sang Thank you God for the Harvest which they had recently learnt and Dr Scarfe played the piano. Parents, grandparents and local parishioners attended the service and it was great to see the church so full. Thank you all for coming. Next term we will be starting to prepare for Christmas and this is always an exciting time for children and staff. The end of term church service is due to take place on Friday 0th December at.15pm. It would be wonderful to see you there. Draft proposals have now been published and include the delivery of 1,950 new houses in the parish of upon Trent. Please make the time to look at the proposals and make your views known before the closing date for comments in November. brailsford ploughing match After one of the best summers we have had for many years, the day of the Brailsford Ploughing Match at the Grange Farm dawned dark and wet. Undeterred by the weather, hundreds of spectators arrived to see superb ploughmanship with both modern ploughs and tractors, and horse-drawn ploughing. In addition there were numerous country trade stands, steam engines and traction engines, exhibitions and competitions. There were also cattle and sheep judging and a hedge-laying competition. Sale and Davy s School, along with several other schools from around the area came along to watch, learn and compete. Following this very successful event, there will be a Plough Sunday Service taking place in St Wilfrid s Church on Sunday 1th January 014 at 11.00am at which the local farming community will gather together to celebrate their skills and livelihood. teddy parachuting A few intrepid teddies turned out to test their parachuting skills on the afternoon of the Harvest Festival. Despite the wind and rain, McAlister Bear posted a very creditable 1.38 seconds and won the prize. There were no reported casualties. Parish History All The Parish history project is at the writing up stage and the team are very grateful to all those who have loaned deeds, papers, pictures, memories and other information. We are still a little restrained by the number of photographs we have to choose from and would welcome a few more. It would be good to be able to make the materials we produce as attractive as possible to show off the Beauty of. They can be old, modern, special memories; anything that portrays the story of would be appreciated. Please either them to kate@webberleydev.com, or ring and we can collect them. Wanted YOUR NEWS Please let us have anything you would like to share with the rest of the Village, everybody likes to read about people they know so if you have been doing anything amazing or are about to let us know and (subject to censorship) we will print it for you. Anybody who lives in the Parish got a special birthday /Anniversary coming up? Send us a picture by the 17th of month before along with a few words and we include it in the next edition. 4

5 Harvest Festival Thanks to the continuing generosity of members of the parish and the Sale and Davy s schoolchildren, the Church was again beautifully decorated and filled with produce in celebration of the harvest, and for donation to the Padley Centre in Derby who will use the food to care for the some of the less fortunate people of Derby. Our thanks go to the ladies who decorated the Church so beautifully, and to the many readers, musicians and helpers who made the service a very special one. Remembrance service On 10th November 013, Members of the Church of St Wilfrid and of the Brookfield Club will be holding a SERVICE OF REMEMBRANCE at the war memorial in the centre of the village to commemorate those who have lost their lives in War, whilst fighting for their country. Everybody will be welcome, either to process or to join in at the memorial itself. After an extensive survey, and some problems of rain getting through the roof, the Council has decided to undertake a complete refurbishment of the roofs of No s 16A. This entails taking off the tiles, re-felting, insulating the roof, inserting fire breaks where required, and then retiling with the original tiles. At the rear of the properties, the kitchens and bathrooms are located in extensions that were added in 1979/80. The pitch of these roofs will be changed to make them more weatherproof, and then the same process will be undertaken as at the front of the cottages. The work is being undertaken by one of our own parish businesses Burridge Oliver Ltd Church Lane drains Opposite the Church on the south side of Church Lane there have, for many years, been some very deep gullies that were cut to take water away from the road and into the ditch. Over the years these gullies have become very deep and are particularly dangerous when the grass is tall as it is easy to fall into them whilst walking along the verge. Some of these gullies are now being replaced with proper drains and pipes to enable the water to be taken away whilst retaining a level verge. 6 SALVATION ARMY ANNUAL APPEAL Once again residents of the village have been very generous in their giving with a total of 5-54 being collected from the door-to-door Big Collection in September. This amount will be increased as a result of individuals completing the forms on the envelope allowing the Salvation Army to recover the tax back from the government. Your donations will be spent entirely in the Salvation Army s work with vulnerable people in the UK. In the current difficult economic circumstances the Salvation Army needs to help more people than eve before that is why your donation is so important. Although the Sally Anne s only collect door-to-door once a year, anyone giving to collectors at the local supermarket also contributes to the ongoing work to help those less fortunate. Thank you to everyone in upon Trent for their continuing support and I hope to see you next September.
