BARROW UPON TRENT PARISH NEWS JULY/AUGUST The pool at Church Lane CREATIVE ARTS WEEK During the week of the 7th June the children of Sale and Davys Primary School enjoyed their annual Creative Arts Week. This year the focus was Eastern art, with the children experiencing a range of new activities. Some of these included: Rimpa painting from Japan, PTA, demonstrated a range of dances and taught each class a different Indian dance through a series of workshops. At the end of the day a special performance took place and each class had the opportunity to show the rest of the school their moves. We all had a wonderful time and learned much about Indian dance. making shadow puppets, batik work, pastel landscapes of Tokyo City, making kimonos, origami and producing clay Indian elephants. As I write we are in the process of mounting and organising the children s work into an exhibition for parents, grandparents and governors to view. Throughout the week a visiting artist helped the children to produce a mural on the infant playground wall. Despite the heavy rain we hope to complete this soon - it already looks very impressive and will make the infant playground a brighter and more stimulating play area. A highlight for many children and staff was the Bollywood dancing. 2 Parish council report Report from the Parish Council Meeting held on Tuesday 1st June The Police were represented at the meeting this month and PCSO Chris Bromiley talked about the crime statistics for the parish and provided a leaflet from the Safer Neighbourhood team which will be uploaded to the website and put on the noticeboards with others available as handouts. County Councillor John Harrison reported that:- The new Chairman of South Derbyshire District Council is born and bred which was tremendous news and both the Chairman and Vice Chairman are from farming stock. This is history in the making as it has never happened before. He also explained under what circumstances SDDC used CCTV as there had been criticism of some Councils using it excessively. SDDC have used it approximately 40 times during the previous financial year and 27 of these were in cases of fraudulent claims and the others were for fly tipping problems. Councillor Harrison made a very generous offer of 1,000 to provide a Loop System in the Village Hall to assist people with hearing difficulties. Under the new government, some schools are being offered the chance to become Academies and Sale and Davys CE Primary School as a school which is rated outstanding by Ofsted is one of them. The Chairman reported that:- It was pleasing to hear that the new Government has promised to abolish Regional Spacial Strategies that lay down the stringent guidelines for the number of new homes to build each year. This now means that District and County Councils will no longer be bound by Government targets to build 12,000 homes in South Derbyshire. The Government s decision will also end the targets for new traveller sites and this affects the 19 pitches that would have been required in South Derbyshire. Mr Eric Pickles has told planning authorities that they should take heed of his advice when considering planning applications with immediate effect. Brookfield Fishing Club The request from Brookfield Club to organise and run a fishing club at Greenacres was given Parish Council approval. It will be a small members only club and permits will be issued. The fishing will only be from a small section of Greenacres and the club will have to provide its own public liability insurance as it cannot be covered under the Parish Council s insurance. TV Aerials The two new aerials have now been fitted and the Coun- cil has been informed that the TV reception is greatly improved. Greenacres Incidents of Dog owners not clearing up after their dogs at the entrance to and around Greenacres is on the increase. Recently it was reported to the Council that there were 17 incidents close to the entrance and 5 during the walk round. It is really very important that owners do clear up after their pets as serious illness can be caused to humans, particularly children and also it does spoil the pleasure obtained from walking round Greenacres by others. DCC will be resurfacing the roads in the village for members of the parish council Anne heathcote - chair keith slater - vice chair ken atkin catherine blackmore john wilcox duncan hewitt clerk to the council gayle campling / gayle@barrowupontrentparish.co.uk The clerk is happy to accept phone calls from 9am-6pm Monday to Friday. Outside these times, unless it is an emergency, please send an , which will be responded to as soon as possible. a period of 10 days sometime between now and September. Notices advising of the dates will be put up by DCC nearer the time. There is no mention of anything being done to the pavements and as these are not in a good state, enquiries will be made as to whether anything is planned for them. The next Parish Council meeting is on Tuesday 20th July 2010 at 7.00 p.m in the Village Hall. Planning applications will be available for viewing from 6.45pm. ST WILFRID S CHURCH As always, the celebration weekend at the end of June was enjoyed by all. Not only were the churchyard nooks and crannies investigated by many, but the mini-ramble was well-attended and the talent of our local photographers is to be congratulated. The Singers entertained with a sell-out concert, and a large number of teddies bravely took their jumps off the tower to the amusement and horror of their owners. The summer events are now over, but please keep a look out for a planned Parish event at the end of September. Please see the separate notice in this Parish News. This will coincide with the Harvest Festival and will take place on the Community Park. There will be games, music, food and fun for all please put this in your diary: Parish BBQ 25th September 2010, Harvest Festival 26th September

Tony writes... church services for july As I look at my diary this week it seems clear that wedding season is about to begin in earnest in our churches. With this in mind, I was recently talking to one of my colleagues in a large urban parish. Whereas traditionally his church had always had a fair number of weddings, given the large population of the parish, he was now only celebrating 4 or 5 weddings per year. Last year, following the relaxation of the Church of England s marriage regulations, the number of weddings in our seven churches jumped up from an average of around 15 to a staggering 25. (My maths makes that a 66% increase!) This year the number has stabilised somewhat at 20 weddings. For some reason we are managing to buck the national trend, which has seen a massive decrease in the number of church weddings during the last decade, particularly since the legalisation of civil ceremonies in venues other than register offices. It has left me reflecting on why this is the case. The cynic might point out that we are rather blessed with the venues we have to offer. We have seven picturesque churches on the fringe of a city. In other words, Aston, Weston,, Elvaston, Swarkestone, Shardlow or are much more attractive settings for the big day than Alvaston, Chellaston or Sinfin. The problem with this argument is that, whereas there have always been couples from outside the parishes who choose to worship with us because they want to be married in one of our churches, I have not noticed a dramatic increase in this category of people during the last 2 years. Around 75% of the couples getting married have what is called a qualifying connection, which in most cases means that they no longer have to pretend to be still living at their parents address in our villages in order to get married in the village where they probably grew up. I don t sense that we are attracting customers in large numbers away from the city parishes. Something else must be happening here. I also find it slightly insulting to suggest that couples only want a pretty venue for their photographs and are not interested in the spiritual aspect of Christian marriage. There are undoubtedly some for whom the venue is more important than the content of the service. However, when I talk to couples who are getting married, I sense that the vast majority have deliberately chosen a Church wedding, because having a religious element to the commitments they are making on their wedding day is very important to them. There are, after all, so many other places to get married these days; therefore choosing a church wedding is a deliberate opting in to what the Church has to offer. Why then are we bucking the trend? 9.00 a.m. Holy Communion Celebrant: Tony Luke Sunday 4 th July Trinity 5 No service today. Firstly, a purely sociological reason. In our very diffuse and fragmented society our villages still manage to hold on to a sense of community and belonging. Therefore people want to come back to the community in which they were nurtured and for which they still have great affection. Secondly, I think we have built up a good reputation. In my lifetime our society has become ever more pluralist and secular. The Church no longer has an automatic place in the life of the 3

nation and the hearts of people. One common response to this trend, has been for the Church to become more inward looking, concerned with its own affairs, more like a club with a clearly defined membership. Over the last 25 years that I have been in ordained ministry, I have witnessed parish churches around me putting the barriers up, making people jump through hoops in order to get married or have their children baptised. Come to Church for six months and we ll talk about it. You need to join this Alpha Course first and then have eight weeks of marriage preparation. We don t marry divorcees. (Therefore the one unforgiveable sin?) Your godparents need to be baptised. All these are very widespread demands and attitudes encountered by those who come to seek the Church s support at important times in their lives. Yes, of course we want to help people to grow in faith, but too many unnecessary barriers have the inevitable result; people go away with the impression that the Church doesn t want them or their children and a massive opportunity to build up relationships has been lost. I am convinced that people want to be married in the Trent and Derwent Parishes because we meet them with friendliness, openness and welcome, helping them to realise that the Church is theirs as much as it is ours. Long may it continue. I ll come down off my soap-box now and wish you a happy summer! Tony upon Trent Parish Plan is now on the Parish web site To access go to and visit the Parish Plan page. Here you will be able to download the plan. We wish to extend very grateful thanks to Mike Sharp who spent countless hours organising the text, pictures and graphs into a skilfully presented document which we hope will support the many projects that are now already in progress. We realise that many of our parishioners do not have access to the web and it is our intention, once we have raised funds, to have this document printed so that every household has a copy. Thank you to everybody for their hard work, patience and support. 50 CLUB The 50 Club enjoyed a Ploughman s lunch in June, followed by a series of chair-based exercises, led by David Edwards from the South Derbyshire 50+ Forum. There are several new events planned for the 50 Club for later in the year, but we shall have a summer break, with the meetings recommencing at the end of September. We hope everyone has a wonderful, relaxing summer, and that the weather stays kind for your activities. upon Trent WI Next meeting Wednesday 14th July 2010 at 7.30pm upon Trent Village Hall Silver Jewellery Workshop with Tina Bluck Come along and join us Everyone welcome Contact numbers for more details Gay Greene Chris Hemmings A Modern Voice for Women 4

Well the end of the school year has come round yet again, what a busy academic year we have had and a time when, the year 6 children in particular, reflect upon their time with us. Everyone has their own little stories of the time they have spent at Sale and Davys and we discussed the big changes that they had seen at the school itself. All said, the building work went on forever, but it is fab that we have a new classroom with no more sneaking past the reception children in the atrium. Many of them thought back to our trip to Lea Green. James D, Timmy and Conor all recalled the steep, muddy hill in the jungle run. Most of the children slid down and got up quite a speed. However, Mrs Tilley went one step further, flew down the hill and almost crashed into a tree, but she was still laughing, although very muddy. Elliot remembered right back to when he was in year 2 with Mrs Green and they went on a trip to Twycross Zoo. Bradley was really keen to see the giraffes but got a little too close for one of the giraffes liking and ended up covered in slimy saliva. Oliver told us about his time in reception, It was lunchtime and Conor had decided that the pudding looked better than the main course, so ate it first. Finn then reminded Oliver of the time in year 3 when Oliver tried to make it look like he had eaten his pudding, He squashed it all up with his spoon to make it look smaller. The lunchtimes provide such fun, but the greatest change mentioned by all the children was having a hall to eat lunch in!! All of the children in year 6 have really enjoyed the non-uniform days and getting to dress up as characters. As Rachel says, It is great fun, especially as the teachers join in too. We asked the children for words to describe their time with us. Here are a few, Eventful, fascinating, brilliant, fun and exciting. What a great note for them to end on. 5

news from sale and davys ce primary school The children in Year 6 are busy recalling their memories of their time spent at this school. They have been involved and led many things and I hope that they will leave us with a sense of achievement, not just academically, but in various other ways too. Although nervous, they are really looking forward to moving on to secondary school and they are ready to face the challenges that lie ahead. The same can be said about me! I am in the process of preparing the way for my successor and you would not believe how much I want to accomplish before I go. As I wade through the folders and documents, I am constantly reminded about all the things I have been involved with since taking up my post as Headteacher. The school keeps scrap books of all the newspaper articles that any of us are in and I came across the first Village Voice that I appeared in, announcing to the local area that I had been appointed as the new Head. That seems like only yesterday. Although time goes very quickly, I think it is important to try to take a step back and reflect on what has been accomplished and learned from the experiences. I find myself doing this rather frequently. During my five-and-a-bit years at Sale and Davys CE Primary School, I have had the great privilege to work with so many dedicated people: from the youngest child to the not-so-youngest adults, both within the school and from the local community and beyond. There are so many happy memories tied up with this that it would be impossible for me to mention them all. Examples include: hardworking and entrepreneurial children; support from parents, including generous donations to the school from time to time; dedicated, talented and determined staff and governors some of whom have at times practically lived here; residents of -on- Trent who have made me feel welcome and a part of the place; Derbyshire County Council and the Diocese of Derby who have supported me through changes and so it goes on. I am moving on to Carlyle Infant and Nursery School in Littleover and I am looking forward to it very much, but I will be very sad to leave you all. Just as it is necessary for the Year 6 children to move on as they grow up, I have felt that I needed a positive challenge and slight change in my career. Thank you for the support you have given me, including suggestions from time to time! I look forward to hearing about how the school goes from strength to strength in the future.
