1 Greece United Methodist Church THE ENLIGHTENER How is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? - Acts 2: 8 Take a look in the Bible at Genesis 11: 1-9, the story of the Tower of Babel. Then look at Acts 2: 1-21 (or even beer, to verse 47), the story of Pentecost (which is celebrated on June 8 th this year). On both these occasions, God caused the people present to speak in various different languages, or tongues, at the same /me. However, God s purpose for the miracle was different in the two instances. At the Tower of Babel, God made people speak many different languages at the same /me as a punishment for their arrogance. It confused their communica/on, so they were no longer able to conspire against God. Their unity was destroyed because they could no longer understand one another. On Pentecost, God sent the Holy Spirit upon the assembled congrega/on and blessed them. They were a group of people from many places in the world. They spoke many languages. Yet they were all able to understand the words that the Disciples of Jesus spoke. As it was at the Tower of Babel, many languages were heard at the same /me. But this /me, the result was not confusion; at Pentecost, the Holy Spirit brought unity and understanding. People from many lands heard the Gospel in the language from home. They were then sent home with the message of the Gospel for the folks back home to hear. The Gospel began to spread from a small corner of the world to many places. The events of Pentecost teaches us that God will speak to us in a language that we can understand. God recognizes human differences: differing human capabili/es and talents. The Holy Spirit of God gives spiritual gi8s according to our abili/es. The Spirit some/mes speaks to others in a language that is strange to our ears. The music of contemporary Chris/an ar/sts such as Rebecca St. James, Casng Crowns, or Jars of Clay may seem harsh to ears that are tuned to In the Garden, or vice versa. But each speaks of God s love for us. God is crea/ve. When the /me is right, God finds a way to speak to each of us. It may be when we are listening for it, or when we least expect it. It may be in English, in the song of a lark, or in a language we never knew existed before. But when it is God s message, be sure that we can understand. In Christ s love, Pastor Ma Stengel June 2014

3 Thoughts from Deacon Dee Spring into Summer is really here!!! Most people ignore the safety spiel before takeoff, but those flight attendants have something important to say. When they mention the oxygen masks dropping down if the cabin loses pressure, they always tell you to put on your own mask before helping others. Why? You re no good to anyone if you succumb to the pressure. Sometimes we get so busy being everything for everyone else that we forget to take care of ourselves. This is especially hard for parents. Your kids need you and the younger they are the more they need your constant attention. But in retirement business happens too. But what does health look like? It s not just physical though it is that. It s not just spiritual though it is that. And it s not just mental though it is that, too. It s all of it. And all of it ties back to our relationship with God. Just think about how you react to others when you re tired, hungry, or not connecting with God. You re not you or at least not the you that you want to be. Take care of yourself, and you ll be able to take better care of your loved ones. If you re connecting with God in mind, body, and soul, it will permeate everything you do. Being healthy starts with our walk with God. Jesus said, Apart from me you can do nothing, and we see that truth all the time. So as you re thinking about ways to get and stay healthy how to secure your own oxygen mask ask yourself these crucial questions. When was the last time you had a day of rest? Our bodies were designed to work in a rhythm of six days of work and one day of rest. Find time to rest. Are our kids any different? Just because they re young doesn t mean they can go without a time of rest. That might mean they shift around homework. Or they only play one sport. Or you make time to get the family to bed early before church the next day. Kids need rest, too. You re really, really busy. But remember the beginning of Jesus ministry? People were lined up outside the door, but he was in a solitary place. In a sense, Jesus was securing his own oxygen mask. If Jesus needed rest, so do we. How did you intentionally move into the presence of God yesterday? Our prayer life is often the first thing affected by the busyness of life. Prayer isn t something you should be checking off a list. However, if it s been a long time since you ve spent time in prayer, maybe a list is the best way to start. Get up a few minutes earlier. Go to bed just a little later. Whatever it takes. How recently have you prayed, Lord, show me myself? Read Psalm 139:23-24 and ask God to reveal something about yourself. It probably won t be something that s a surprise to you, but getting it out in the light means you can deal with it. It s easier to see the deficiencies in other people at times. But if we re open to God showing us our own deficiencies, we can intentionally move into those and address them. And when we grow spiritually that helps our spouse and kids also. (Adapted from Group Magazine.) ASK GOD FOR HELP THIS SUMMER: 1. To help you find time for a Sabbath. 2. To help you in areas where you re not whole. 3. For opportunities to teach your kids about being spiritually healthy. Deacon Dee

7 Message from Outreach: Jesus loves the li8le children, all the children of the world. Up at the head table in the cafeteria, there sat a big bowl of bright red, juicy apples. Beside the bowl was this note: Take only one. Remember, Jesus is watching. At the other end of the table sat a plate of just-baked chocolate chip cookies. Beside the plate was another lile note, this one scrawled in a child s handwri/ng: Take all you want. Jesus is watching the apples! June (as well as August and November) is another Undie Sunday month, another chance for us to help children with our dona/ons of new underwear. 9 STEWARDSHIP I thought I would go to an on-line site called Wikipedia to get a different perspective on Stewardship. Wikipedia is basically an encyclopedia on-line with a lot of information and references to other sites and literature on the subject you re researching. Once there, I found most of the information, even the theological references were linked to our environment and surroundings. It gave a lot of information on how the term originated mostly through defining duties of servants. It went on to give theological definitions from all faiths. What I found most interesting was that even many atheists believe in stewardship, with mother earth seen as a god of sorts. Here at church, we continue to need your support to fulfill our goals which include many worthwhile outreach projects. When we take a close look at where our funds go, it s heart-warming to know that we do a lot of good in our world through UMCOR, Asbury storehouse, Grace House, Open Door Mission, our youth programs and involvement in missions, Habitat for Humanity, Flood Bucket project, Vacation Bible School, the Greece Ecumenical Food Shelf, Undie Sunday and many more. All this is possible through your commitment of time, talent and treasures. We thank you for ongoing support; you should be proud of your church and it s community involvement. Bill Mason Finance Report: The end of April figures are in. We had $112, usable income. We spent $111, with $ yet to pay in April. Bottom line is we are behind 5, for the year. On the other hand Budget Gap participation made a quick turnaround. We had an 8% increase in givers to this fund or 13 more people participating than we had in March, however the work is not done as the summer months are upon us and the bills keep coming in. there. God Bless Bill Our Church has made a good effort and we have to continue on with it. Remember the challenge is still Chris8an Educa8on Volunteer Recogni8on Sunday June 22 Both Services If you have volunteered in leading Sunday School, Adult Small Group Studies, Nursery, Children s Church, or Youth Group, please join the congrega8on in honoring your though=ulness in leading in ministry. 10 Sunday School Mission Project Stamp Act for Curriculum This year, the Sunday School classes are joining with the Alliance Stamp Ministry in collecting and recycling cancelled stamps. The proceeds go toward publishing Spanish language Sunday school materials and distributing them to churches in Latin America. Even in the age of , people are still using stamps. Help us by collecting your used envelopes and trimming them so the stamps have at least a 1/3 of paper left around them. If you are not comfortable trimming the stamps, just bring in the used envelopes in and our volunteers will trim them for you. Thank you in advance for helping us spread the God s word to others in the world. UMW "Daughters All Banquet" The Daughters All Banquet, held on Friday, May 9 th, honored the women in our church as we celebrated Mothers Day, a long-standing tradi/on at GUMC. Only the name of the event changed. The theme of the evening, Aprons The Ties That Bind was a very nostalgic walk down memory lane for many of those aending who brought their aprons, hung then on our clothesline and shared many of their special apron story memories. The dinner preceding the program was outstanding catered by Deacon Dee along with Linda Hoffman, UMW Local Church Coordinator, and assisted by Jean Lee, Joan Fowler, Sue Sepkowski, Nancy LaClair, Norma Rapini and Janet Boehm. A great group of men kept the women out of the kitchen. They were Tom Hinterman, Ray Huber, Barr Ingle, Don LaClair and Bill Mason. Sue Sepkowski made the aprons which were won by Cheryl Sheldon and Catherine Marshall. Special recogni/on was given to Melissa Dunn and Sue Sepkowski who did so much in helping to make our evening special for all the women who were present. HABITAT FOR HUMANITY GOOD NEWS! A8er a lot of discussion over the last few mee/ngs, we ve finally got the coali/on team to commit to a build star/ng this fall. There has been some reluctance because the /me frame between this home and the last is shorter than usual compared to our previous projects. Some of us want to start because we have already raised enough funds to cover the first third required at the groundbreaking and others are concerned that will nega/vely impact the ability to raise funds for the home to follow. Both good arguments, but a decision became easier when we were told of a new ini/a/ve the local Habitat affiliate is taking. Groundbreaking and founda/on work would be done this fall with the actual homebuilding done on a panelized approach, indoors, during the winter. In the spring, the panels would be assembled on site and the building completed. This concept would give us longer to raise the necessary funds and offer opportuni/es for volunteer work throughout the winter. This is a new concept and is s/ll in the development stages, but our group wants to par/cipate if it comes together the way Habitat expects. So..stay tuned, be ready to help support the sixth home build with your dona/ons and /me. Thanks, Bill Mason

11 Thoughts from Co-Lay Leader Lisa Kostyshak Presence Thank you Brendon Burchard. What is Presence? It is the most important human ability, as all intuition, skill, and virtue depend on one's ability to be fresh and alive in this very moment in order to consciously choose, feel, perform, and serve. We cannot fully access our emotions if we are mentally living in another time zone - the past or the future. And so presence is a return to the here and now so that we can feel alive, loving, genuine, focused, and spontaneous. What does it feel like? How can we describe it? Presence is a grounding and harmony in this very moment; it is a physical alertness, an emotional acceptance, a spiritual awareness and union with what is in front of us in the here and now; it is a vital consciousness to who we are and what we are sensing; it is a mindfulness to what is meaningful; it is the Way. Should we wish to live a free, vibrant, and emotionally and spiritually intelligent life, we must learn to access presence and stay there. A few related Bible Verses Isaiah 43:18-19, NIV Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland. Matthew 6:34, NIV Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. Psalm 118:24, ESV This is the day that the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.
