3 PAGE 3 UNITED METHODIST VANE FEBRUARY 2019 Parish Health Ministries Notes Fraud/Scam Alert Below is an which originated from the Social Security Administration Office and it was confirmed. Please be very careful with any phone message or that you receive, and please do not open any links on these types of s. Go directly to the Social Security website (or other OFFICIAL) site to contact an agency or organization. We have become aware of reports of fraudulent telephone calls from individuals claiming to represent the Social Security Administration (SSA). In them, unknown callers are using threatening language to warn unknowing victims that they will be arrested or face other legal action if they fail to call a provided phone number or press the number indicated in the message to address the issue. In some instances, these unknown callers switch tactics and communicate that they want to help an individual with activating a suspended Social Security number. Such calls are a scam, and are not coming from official SSA representatives. We encourage you to inform your members and extended networks not to engage with such callers, and to report any suspicious calls to Social Security s Office of the Inspector General by calling or submitting a report on the OIG website. We also urge you to read and share our Social Security Matters blog, which provides more information on the nature of these fraudulent calls, as well as instructions on how to report such activity. Social Security is committed to protecting the privacy and security of the people we serve. We appreciate your help in spreading the word about this important topic. Sincerely, Matthew Baxter Public Affairs Specialist Social Security Administration (T) ext. 4 FEBRUARY 2019 UNITED METHODIST VANE PAGE 4 Happy New Year to the RUMC Family and Friends! I would just like to say THANK YOU for your generosity with our mission projects and programs in You have gone above and beyond with donations to the Food Pantry at Project Outreach, school supplies, UNICEF, UMCOR Cleaning Buckets, socks and toiletry items, toys for Methodist Home, Christmas Angels, coats and winter clothing, Community Dinner, and much more. We may not know the recipients of these items, but I am sure they are much appreciated. Thank you again for your generosity. Willa 50 buckets to UMCOR $ to UNICEF (+ matching donation) 6 families for Christmas Angels Hundreds of food items Many book bags and school supplies basket of socks basket of toiletry items 120+ items of winter clothing desserts, beverages, salads for Community Dinner monetary donations Thank You: Carl Lawson (and Verna) would like to thank our RUMC family for the many cards; the carolers and carols; the cookies; the flowers; the Advent Wreath; the UMW gift bag; the pastoral visits and phone calls, and messages of goodwill that were received has been a challenging year: there were times when we wondered if Carl would have been able to make it to 2019, but he did. We know that your individual and combined prayers made it possible and so, we were able to celebrate our 54th wedding anniversary on January 2. Thank you all very much. We wish you and your families a Happy and Holy May God bless you all. From Arlene Swavely: To the Kind people of the RUM Church Thank you so much for stopping by to sing carols. I enjoyed my favorite songs. The cookies were a treat since I don t bake and to think people took time from their busy schedule to sign such nice Christmas cards was greatly appreciated. Happy New Year!!! Dear Church Family: Though we are still learning spoken English, allow us to express our heartfelt thanks in writing. Our family went through a lot this past 2018 yet we have received so much help and love from you and other brothers and sisters during this difficult time. Thank you for your prayers when I was in the midst of my difficulties. Thank you for the warm clothes. Thank you for helping us start a new life. We are loved fully because we are in Him. We used to be foolish thinking that we could achieve anything with our own efforts, that studying hard for a good school, working hard for a good life and finishing a PhD had the greatest value. We thought everything was to be done our way. Yes, they are good, but we missed the most important thing: we should rely on God, not on ourselves. Therefore God smites us with what we are so proud of. A PhD degree could not do anything and we had to start all over again. Everyone turned their backs on us, even old friends because of their fears or other reasons. We drifted in another country and we didn't know where the future is. Everything is out of our way -- the end of man, the beginning of God. Weakness helps us to depend on God. We read the Bible every day and we have learned to rely on God and not on ourselves. It has increased our faith in God. When we begin to obey, God will begin to bless us. In retrospect, we couldn t have escaped without God s grace. Thanks be to God! Through experience, we know that God is truly faithful and merciful. He does things in His time and His grace is always sufficient. Thanks be to God! And thank you all! In Christian love, Yoke and Annie
