What is a kingdom? Is it the brick and mortar that build up the castle? Is it the expanse of land a king can reasonably defend? Our notions of kingdoms may be romanticized in the modern era, but for the Israelites, a kingdom held deep historical meaning. Thousands of years before the birth of Christ, the Israelites had asked God for a king. After the reigns of David and Solomon, the united kingdom dissolved into factions, and the land was conquered by the Assyrians, Babylonians, and, finally, Romans. For the Israelites, a kingdom was something to build, both structurally and civilly. While this had ended in ruin for their ancestors, many of Jesus' contemporaries longed for the restoration of an earthly kingdom. Jesus' words in today's Gospel are a radical departure from this perspective. He compares the Kingdom of God to a field, but it appears that the farmer has little to do with its progress. The seed would sprout and grow, he knows not how. Of its own accord, the land yields fruit. Jesus introduces his followers to a new sort of kingdom, a kingdom where God provides the growth. There is work to be done, of course. When the grain is ripe, he wields the sickle at once, for the harvest has come. But for the Kingdom of God to flourish, there are certain things that are outside of our control. We sow seeds of kindness, justice, and integrity? and then we must be patient. As shoots of faith appear, we nurture the growth with encouragement. As Christians, our task is not to build the Kingdom of God under our power alone, but to trust in the lifegiving movement of God. Reading Partners will have tutoring June 20-July 24, Monday-Thursday. The session times are: 8:30 am - 9:00 am 9:15 am - 9:45 am 10:00 am - 10:30 am 10:45 am - 11:15am 11:30 am - noon Since the sessions are only a half hour, we ask that our volunteers take at least two sessions. The students we work with at Ascension tend to be younger than at other schools, so it's more likely volunteers work with a student entering grades 1-3. West Suburban Grief Coalition is held at Church of St. Therese of Deephaven, Minnetonka Blvd., through August 30, Meetings every Thursday, 4:30-6:00 pm. On the weekend of June 23/24, Sister Mary McGlone, a Sister of St. Joseph will speak at all the Masses in behalf of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. Sister Mary will speak about Peru and the work of the Sisters of St. Joseph who minister among those living in poverty and in the margins of society. Sister Mary has been a missionary in Peru and is well aware of the needs of the poor. She has traveled across the United States and given talks about the Sisters of St. Joseph in Peru. A father is a man who loves without cost to his children and tries to raise them to be fully human creatures with the abilities to make a difference in our world. Some fathers are successful, some are not. However, almost all try their best. This Father's Day, let your dad know that you appreciate all his efforts. Strength--Your strength in helping me to tell right from wrong was a great gift. Honor--You taught me that to honor myself was a way to honor the God who made me. Summer Food Drive Please help by bringing non-perishable food donations as well as toiletry, laundry & paper products for PRISM, our local food shelf. Summer is a time of heavy demand at the food shelves because children are home. Thank you for your generosity to the hungry in our community. You can drop your food donations on the shelves in the hallway near the Cry Room or in the food collection boxes at the exits. Standard or small sized items are needed rather than large bulk sizes. Canned items are preferred rather than glass. Kid Friendly Foods: Lunch focused peanut butter, jelly, lunchable snacks, chips (small), applesauce, fruit cups, jello/pudding, granola bars, juice boxes, crackers, etc. Pantry Staples: Oil, flour, sugar, brown sugar, rice, noodles/pasta, spaghetti sauce, cereals, ready to serve canned foods, soups, stew, canned tuna/ham/chicken, pancake mix, syrup, etc. Thanks for helping feed the hungry! Families Moving Forward is looking for new overnight volunteers. We will be hosting the following weeks in 2018: July 29 through August 5 and December 2 through 9. We need a total of 14 volunteers for the week. Time commitment is 8 pm until 6 am the following morning. Our guest count will be up to 4 families with a maximum of 16 people. Duties are as follows:...arrive by 8 pm to meet our guests....review guest information with FMF coordinator...enforce lights out times: 9:00 p.m. for children, 10:00 p.m. for teens, 11:00 p.m. for adults....lock outside doors by 10:00 p.m....once everyone is settled in and lights are out, you may go to bed, in your own private room. (You are not expected to stay awake all night.)...the Morning Coordinator will come in to relieve you at 6:00 a.m. Please consider this opportunity to volunteer with Families Moving Forward.
