4 St. Peter Parish From Greg Ostdiek, SJ Cambridge, MA I am a Jesuit currently studying at the School of Theology and Ministry at Boston College. I grew up in Ohio, with my parents, and a very slightly younger twin brother. I graduated from the University of Dayton with degrees in mechanical engineering and English. I then joined the Navy as a Surface Warfare Officer, with a nuclear propulsion subspecialty. I served 13 years in a variety of positions, culminating as the Executive Officer of USS Dextrous, a mine countermeasure ship in the Fifth Fleet. I resigned my commission in 2009 to enter the Society of Jesus. I ve been in the priest formation program for the last 10 years. I studied graduate philosophy at Fordham University, taught high school physics in Chicago, and now I m at BC. This September 15th I will be ordained a transitional deacon at St. Ignatius Church. I am very happy to be joining St. Peter s to learn about parish ministry. Thank you to all of the staff for welcoming me. Please say hello when you see me. I look forward to meeting you all. Time to Register for 1st Communion, Confirmation and Religious Education for Grades K-8 Kindergarten - Grade 5 Classes meet on scheduled Sundays from 10:15 to 11:15 a.m. The first class is September 30. 1st Communion Children in Grade 2 who have been baptized may prepare to receive the sacrament in May. Older children may also prepare. Please let us know if you have a child above Grade 2 who would like to prepare to receive 1st Communion. Confirmation Preparation This is a two-year program for students in Grades 9 and 10 (or higher grades). We meet once a month on scheduled Sunday evenings from 6:00 to 7:15 p.m. Our first gathering is October 14 in the Parish Center. Middle School Grades 6-8 This program includes group meetings, hands-on learning, activities, and service projects. We meet once a month on scheduled Sunday evenings from 6:00 to 7:15 p.m. Our first gathering is October 21 in the Parish Center. Learn About: The Book of Exodus and The Journey Home Six Sundays Beginning September 9 10:15-11:15 a.m., Parish Center Join us to study and discuss The Book of Exodus in the Bible. Exodus tells us the story of the Israelites travails and tribulations in trying to leave Egypt and return to their homeland. It is full of events that are as topical today as they were thousands of years ago. Studying this divine story of the journey home will give us insight into the universal characteristics of human psyche and soul as well provide us clues into our own inner journey. No prior knowledge of the Pentateuch is necessary. All materials will be provided. You are welcome to bring your own Bible, along with your curious mind. 5 September 9, 2018 We Need Your Help with Our Religious Education Programs Our duty and privilege as baptized Catholics is to share our faith and to pass on our experience of it in our daily lives. We need many people to help us in our Grades K-5 classes and our Middle School and Confirmation preparation programs. No experience needed; just a love of our Catholic faith and love and respect for children and teenagers. We also need classroom assistants and people to help with providing a safe environment. We cannot offer our programs without the help and support of our parishioners. You will find the time you spend with our young people to be special and rewarding. Mondays 7-8:00 p.m., Parish Center Beginning September 24 Michael O Brien will again offer his introductory course in New Testament Greek. Lift the veil of translations and experience directly the inspired words of the New Testament! We will start with the alphabet and work up to short passages from the Gospels, stressing the sound of the language through reading aloud. New Testament Greek Reading Course Gospel of John 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of the Month 7-8:00 p.m. Beginning September 18 Michael O Brien and Deacon Tim O Donnell will offer a course in readings from John s Gospel. Experience this vivid and compelling Gospel in its original language! We will provide for some Greek language review while focusing on reading and translation of the text. Participants should have completed a year of either New Testament or Classical Greek. There is no charge for either course. Learning materials will be distributed. Harvard Square Churches Meal Program Volunteers are needed through September 20, on Thursdays from 3-4 p.m. for sandwich making and a group from 5-7 p.m. to help with serving and cleanup. Allow yourself to slow down and listen for God's voice in scripture, poetry, art, music and nature. One-on-one spiritual direction is also available. Come Sing With Us Family Choir is a group that has no weekly rehearsals, no robes, and no age limits. It gives families the chance to sing together at the 9:00 a.m. Mass. Singles and couples are also welcome. Everyone should feel comfortable taking part. Join us at 8:30 a.m. to go over music. The Traditional Choir sings at the Saturday 4:00 p.m. Mass, beginning September 15. Rehearsals are Saturdays at 3:00 p.m. The Contemporary Choir sings at the Sunday 5:00 p.m. Mass, beginning September 16. Rehearsals are Sundays at 4:15 p.m. Instrumentalists Do you play an instrument? Come join us! All are welcomed at any of the Masses. Join Our Men s Spirituality Group Wednesdays, 7-8:30 p.m., Parish Center September 12, 19, 26 and October 3 Our Men s Spirituality Group is for men 18 and older, who come together for prayer and sincere discussion in an atmosphere of trust. Sometimes we use a book or other readings as a guide. We meet on scheduled Wednesdays, beginning September 12. If you ve been thinking about how to set aside time for prayer and reflection, then this might be the opportunity! No experience with group is required. Give it a try!
