2 Generous God, You show us the way that leads to everlasting life. Through holy baptism you have called us to proclaim the Good News. Guide and give wisdom to those discerning a priestly or religious vocation. Bless and strengthen those who have made a lifetime commitment of service in the Church. Enrich our Church with dedicated married and single people, as well as with priests, deacons, and consecrated religious. Filled with your Holy Spirit, we ask this blessing that we, your people, may follow Jesus, our Good Shepherd, now and always. Amen. The greatest love story that ever happened: God's continuing love for His people. All God asks is "Love one another as I have loved you." The world really needs to see people who are trying to love others with all their hearts. Priests and religious can be excellent examples of this love. If you are willing to answer God's call, Father Matthew Dupré, our vocations director, wants to talk to you. him at mdupre@diobr.org or telephone him at Be who God meant you to be and you will set the world on fire. - Saint Catherine of Siena All-loving God, we give you thanks and praise for mothers young and old. We pray for young mothers, who give life and count toes and tend to our every need; May they be blessed with patience and tenderness to care for their families and themselves with great joy. We pray for our own mothers who have nurtured and cared for us; May they continue to guide us in strong and gentle ways. We remember mothers who are separated from their children because of war, poverty, or conflict; May they feel the loving embrace of our God who wipes every tear away. We pray for women who are not mothers but still love and shape us with motherly care and compassion. We remember mothers. grandmothers, and great -grandmothers who are no longer with us but who live forever in our memory and nourish us with their love. Amen. We will not have our customary coffee & donuts after the 8 and 10 am Masses this weekend, due to the Mother s Day holiday. While we know mothers love donuts, it s a wonderful day to do something a little more special to show the mothers in your lives just how much you love and appreciate them! Happy Mother s Day to all the mothers in our Parish community! Most Rev. Robert W. Muench, D.D. bishop@diobr.org Very Rev. Paul D. Counce, J.C.L. pastor@cathedralbr.org Mrs. Sheila G. 3 This weekend, May 9/10, we will take up the annual Catholic Commentator Collection. The funds brought in by this campaign help to publish our diocesan weekly newspaper, helping to spread the news and activities of our local church communities throughout the area. Please help us to continue spreading the word of God in this way! Next weekend, May 16/17, we will take up the annual Collection for Catholic Communication Campaign. This collection communicates the Gospel through Catholic social media activities and enriches our faith through podcasts, television, radio, and print media. Half of all proceeds remain in our diocese and support local needs, so please be generous in this collection. Parents preparing for the baptism of a child are reminded that they must attend a pre-baptismal parents seminar. These are offered monthly here at the Cathedral and in practically every other Church Parish. We recommend you attend early in the pregnancy, when it s way more convenient for the expectant mother! This month s seminar here is scheduled this week, on Monday, May 11, at 6:30 pm in our Parish Office s Conference Room. Please register for it first, either by calling or by sending an to office@cathedralbr.org we need to know you re coming! Bishop Shelton Fabre of the Houma- Thibodaux Diocese will offer a special morning Mass here at the Cathedral on Wednesday, May 20, at 7:30 am. Monthly Masses are held while the State Legislature is in session two blocks away, and the Catholic legislators of our State gather to pray with and encourage each other in their faith. While government in our country must necessarily be non-sectarian in matters of religion, Catholic legislators do try to see that our values, based on objective truth, are reflected in our laws. Please pray for them! Sunday, May 10 Choir Rehearsal 9 am Nursery (6 mos. to 6 yrs.) during the 10 am Mass Scripture Study 11 am No Coffee & Donuts Happy Mother s Day!! 4 Our Parish family extends it condolences to the family and friends of Charles Zizzi, a longtime parishioner of St. Joseph Cathedral, who died this past week, and was buried from the Cathedral on Monday, May 4, with Deacon Brent Duplessis officiating. May God bless them with peace and comfort them in their sorrow. May the angels lead him into paradise, and welcome him to the holy city, the new and eternal Jerusalem! Our Parish family s congratulations this week go out to Brittany Nicole Karner and Patrick Anthony Lipoma, who were married here at the Cathedral on Friday evening, May 1, with Deacon Randall Clement officiating. May God bless them as they embark on their life -journey of commitment and faith together. We pledge to support them and one day their children with our prayers! The collection for the weekend of May 2/3 came to $10, ($9, from 129 Identified Givers and the remaining $1, from unidentified ones). The monthly Collection for the Maintenance and Repair of the Cathedral brought in $3, from 69 Identified Givers. Thanks so very much for your sacrificial generosity to St. Joseph Cathedral Parish! Remember, our Parish operations get no subsidy or other funding from the Diocese of Baton Rouge its grant to our building fund to expand our Parish Hall was the sole exception over the entire history of the diocese! We depend solely on YOU for support of our day-to-day operations! Also, please make sure you include the Cathedral in your will or living trust and periodically check with your financial planner to keep this up-to-date for this is a way to provide substantially for our future out of resources which may not be available right now. It s not a legal obligation that you do this, but it may well be a spiritual one! Financial information is always available from the Parish s Director of Administration, at either or at office@cathedralbr.org Not only our own parishioners but Catholics from throughout the Diocese of Baton Rouge are welcome to choose their Cathedral for the celebration of the Sacraments. These important spiritual events are scheduled through our Parish Office (office@cathedralbr.org or ). Parents must attend a required pre-baptismal parents seminar as well as schedule the baptism. Preparation for adult Sacramental Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist) takes place as part of the Parish s RCIA process throughout the year. Second grade children, no matter where they attend elementary school, are prepared for these Sacraments each school-year within a special program here. Special, brief preparation programs are held here each Spring, one for our parish s teenagers who are in the eleventh grade, and another for other adults who wish to be confirmed. Church regulations require at least six months of preparation for any wedding. Our advice is to call well in advance of that time if you wish to reserve a wedding date and receive information: our facilities are often booked well over a year ahead of time! One s own parish clergy are expected to supervise your Catholic prenuptial preparation and to officiate at the wedding ceremony here. We extend our congratulations to little Annie Elizabeth Barback, daughter of Brad and Brittany Barback, who was baptized here at the Cathedral on Saturday, May 2, by Father Trey Nelson. This child now a member of the Catholic Church has been freed from original sin and given God s own sanctifying grace! We pray God blesses her and her family and friends as her future unfolds! 4

5 Will You Leave a Legacy? As a parishioner or friend who supports St. Joseph Cathedral, you demonstrate your faith. You also show that you care about our historic presence in Baton Rouge and our mission to keep the Gospel alive in the future. But what happens to your support when you are no longer here? If you remember St. Joseph Cathedral in your will or living trust, you leave a legacy that helps us continue the work that you value far into the future. Why Include a Charitable Gift in Your Will or Living Trust? It s simple to do. It can be as easy as including language stating, I give $25,000 to St. Joseph Cathedral. You can change your mind. We won t receive the gift until after your death. During your lifetime, you can amend anything you choose, i.e., beneficiaries, amounts, etc. Tax-wise, it could be beneficial to you and your heirs. Gifts to qualified charitable organizations like the Cathedral reduce the value of your estate for estate tax purposes. It s an easy way to support your Cathedral, and we d be grateful for your gift. Bequests of every size build our future financial strength. How you include a gift in your will or living trust depends on what you want to accomplish and what you want to support. Besides choosing how your bequest will come to us, you also have a say in how it will be used and acknowledged. Here are some options: Give a percentage of your estate s residue (the amount left after taxes, expenses and specific bequests have been paid): I give 25 percent of the rest, residue and remainder of my estate to St. Joseph Cathedral. Give a specific dollar amount or item of property: I give St. Joseph Cathedral $25,000. Or, I give St. Joseph Cathedral 100 shares of IBM stock. Make your bequest contingent: I give St. Joseph Cathedral $25,000 if my niece and nephew predecease me. More options: Make the gift unrestricted. It will go into the St. Joseph Cathedral Parish General Fund, to be spent on ordinary everyday needs, bills and payroll. Make the gift restricted but general. It will go into the St. Joseph Cathedral Dedicated Fund with the Baton Rouge Area Foundation to help grow a funding source for the Cathedral Parish. Only the interest from this Dedicated Fund is used for Cathedral Parish expense. Make the gift restricted and specify the restriction. Several options exist for this: It can be directed into the St. Joseph Cathedral Dedicated Building Fund with the Baton Rouge Area Foundation. The interest from this Fund is used for capital construction, improvements and repairs. If the gift in excess of $100,000, a new restricted, named Dedicated Fund can be established with the Baton Rouge Area Foundation to benefit the Cathedral Parish, such as the St. Joseph Cathedral Bettie Womack Dedicated Building Fund. It can be directed to support some specific area or program, such as liturgical expenses, the musical program, or youth ministry. Any gift can be given to memorialize or honor a loved one, such as This gift is made in memory of my loving mother, Mrs. Mary Jones Smith, a woman whose faith began and was nourished at St. Joseph Cathedral. If a gift through your will or living trust is of interest to you, please contact the Cathedral Parish Office to learn more, at or office@cathedralbr.org. This message provides only general gift planning information, not specific legal, tax or investment advice, and so should not be looked to or relied upon as a source for such advice. Consult with your own legal and financial advisors before making any gift. 5 View this Bulletin online at
