Creative Bible Lessons For Children More Kitchen Craze Get your spatula ready again and let s get cookin on yet another incredible series of lessons from God s Word taught through food. Come join us and discover how instant you are. Week 1 - Are You Sure? Week 2 - Are You Flexible? Week 3 - Are You Ready? Week 4 - Are You Prepared? Week 5 - Are You Instant? Week 6 - Are You Delighting? Check out more books and lessons by Kolby and Mary Beth King at Smashwords.com Introduction Our Goal To help students experience God s Word in a colorful, fun, surprising and creative manner; to ignite in them a hunger that leads them to dig in, crawl inside, explore, enjoy and live out God s truth. Teaching Method Children only remember 10% of what they hear, 20% of what they see, and 30% of what they hear and see. They are concrete learners, which means they retain 80 to 90% of what they do, touch, smell, taste, and help teach. Therefore, this curriculum is packed with a teaching style that will help them to: Find it. Taste it. Touch it. Make it. Know it. Grow it. See it. Show it. Live it!

More Kitchen Craze Week 1 - Are You Sure? YOU WILL NEED: A waffle maker, waffle mix, water, the correct sized measuring cup, a large bowl, a way to pour the waffle mix into the waffle maker, tongs to remove the waffles, Pam to grease the waffle maker, paper towels, a whisk, butter and syrup. BEFORE CLASS BEGINS -Pre-heat the waffle-maker. -Set out items so that you re ready to cook when the students arrive. You ll want to get waffles in the maker as soon as you can and then have the discussion while they are cooking and while the kids are eating. LET S COOK ASK How many of you like waffles? SAY Today we re going to learn an important lesson through waffles but first we need to start cooking! (1) Let the students help you scoop out the right amount of mix and pour in the right amount of water. Whisk it according to the mix s instructions. (2) Begin the following discussion as you cook the waffles each will take about 90 seconds. If you are short on time, tell the students that each of them will get half a waffle. ASK What country do you think created waffles? SAY The history of the waffle can be traced back to ancient Greece when Athenians cooked flat cakes between two metal plates over burning embers.* SAY That s what makes a waffle It is pressed between two hot grills. The apostle Paul, in the Bible, talks about being pressed too. Listen to what Paul says in Philippians 1: Listen especially for what he says he is being pressed between. For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. But if to live in the flesh, this will bring fruit from my work; then I don't make known what I will choose. But I am hard-pressed from both directions, having the desire to depart and be with Christ, which is far better. Yet, to remain in the flesh is more needful for your sake. Having this confidence, I know that I will remain, yes, and remain with you all, for your progress and joy in the faith, that your rejoicing may abound in Christ Jesus in me through my presence with you again. ASK What did Paul say was hard-pressing him from both directions? (The desire to live on in the flesh and the desire to depart and be with Christ.) ASK What do you think Paul was talking about? SAY Paul wrote the book of Philippians from a Roman prison. He had been arrested for the cause of Christ and at the end of the book he even sends a greeting saying, All the saints greet you, especially those who are of Caesar's household (Phil. 4:22). SAY Even though Romans were being saved through his imprisonment, there was a very real possibility that Paul would be executed. So he was pressed between two desires one to live on in the body, which would be better for others, but also he had a desire to be with Christ in eternity.

ASK What do you think Paul meant when he said, For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain (Phil. 1:21)? (As long as he lived, he would live for Jesus, but he knew that dying was gain for him personally because he knew for certain that he would spend eternity with Jesus.) SAY Paul could talk so confidently about death because he knew for certain that he would be with God forever in heaven. ASK Can you have this kind of assurance? How? (By giving your life to Jesus and receiving Him as your Lord and Savior.) ASK How does a person receive Jesus? SAY Most of us in American will never face the kind of life-and-death situations that Paul faced, but God wants us to have what Paul had A confidence that we know we have been saved and that we know for certain that we are going to heaven. So, are you sure? Do you know for sure where you would spend eternity? SAY If you don t have this assurance, when we are done, let me or one of our other teachers know that you want to talk about how you can know for sure that you would spend eternity in heaven. If you ask, today we ll let you sit down with someone who will simply tell you what the Bible says about how you can have this confidence too. IF YOU HAVE TIME Waffle Trivia Fun Facts* -The name waffle actually comes from wafer. In the Middle Ages, the church would use wafers, but when bakeries started competing with monasteries in the wafer market, the tastier waffle emerged. -The Pilgrims discovered waffles in Holland after fleeing England but before coming the America in When they came to America they brought the knowledge of waffle making with them. -Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the United States, as legend says, bought a waffle iron in France and began serving waffles in the White House in the early 1800s. This sparked the popularity of waffle parties nationwide. -In 1972 a coach at the University of Oregon revolutionized athletic shoes by using a waffle iron to create better traction on the rubber soles of his sneakers. -In America traditional waffle toppings include butter and syrup but a variety of other combinations exists including waffles topped with Kidney stew, fried chicken, or mashed-potatoes, as well as a variety of fruits and nuts. Waffle history and trivia came from: More Kitchen Craze Week 2 - Are You Flexible? YOU WILL NEED: Enough Tuna fish for every student to have a sandwich, mayonnaise, spoons, knives to spread it, a can opener; and bread and pickles. BEFORE CLASS BEGINS -Set out the Tuna fish items that you ll need. Make sure you also have a can opener ready.

LET S COOK ASK Who remembers what we made last week? ASK Who remembers what we learned by making waffles? ASK How many of you like to eat fish? What kinds of fish do people eat? SAY Today we re not going to cook up fish on the grill. Instead, we re going to make sandwiches using a kind of fish that is already prepared. Today we re going to make Tuna fish sandwiches. SAY Did you hear what I said we re using something that is already prepared and we ll be talking about something we want you to have your heart prepared for. Let your students help you put the tuna in a bowl, add however much mayo you desire, and pickles, if you want. Once it is mixed, let your students make a sandwich from it, then continue with the discussion below. DISCUSSION Read from your Bible Acts 16:6-9 SAY Paul had one plan, but God had a different plan. Paul was going one way, but God didn t let him. Then Paul turned a different direction but God stopped that too. KEY Paul was not so set in what he wanted to do that he didn t listen to God. When God directed a different way, Paul obeyed without complaint. ASK Have you ever asked God for something that He didn t give you? Why do you think you sometimes don t get what you ask for? (Sometimes God says no to our prayers because He has greater plans or because what we want would not be good for us. God had a greater plan for Paul in guiding him than what Paul had planned for himself.) ASK Have you ever asked your parents for something that you didn t get? ASK What is flexibility? (Willingness to change plans without getting upset.) ASK How flexible are you? Do you often get upset when you don t get your way? Or when your family has to change plans, even if it was something you were looking forward to? ASK How do you normally feel when you don t get what you want? ASK How do you normally act when you don t get what you want? SAY Tuna fish are found in most of the oceans of the world because they can adapt better than most fish. Most fish stay the temperature of the water around them. Tuna, however, have the ability to increase their body temperature and keep the heat in, so that they can swim in cooler waters. Because they are flexible, they can do more. SAY You will find that when you are flexible and not argumentative or pouty that you will get to do more too. If you have a personal story that relates to this idea, please share it with your kids. If not, then ASK: (1) When was the last time you lost your temper? (2) When was the last time you pouted because you didn t get what you wanted? (3) When was the last time you argued with your mom or dad over something you wanted or some place you wanted to go? ASK How do you think God wants you to act in situations like these? (To act just like Jesus.) SAY We want your hearts to be prepared (kind of like the Tuna that was already ready to eat) to be ready to always do what s right no matter what you might face in life. IF YOU HAVE EXTRA TIME

Tuna Trivia Fun Facts* -There are over 48 different kinds of Tuna fish. In the United States, when you buy a can of Tuna you are actually eating a Tuna fish called Albacore. -Tuna are fast swimmers, sometime moving as quickly as 43 miles per hour. -Bluefin Tuna can maintain a body temperature of degrees in water as cold as 43 degrees. This exhibits almost a warm-blooded adaption. -Japan is the world s biggest consumer of Tuna fish. -In early 2011, a record was set when a 754-pound Bluefin Tuna fish sold in a Tokyo auction for $350,000. Tuna trivia came from: More Kitchen Craze Week 3 - Are You Ready? YOU WILL NEED: An easy-to-make, ready dessert, today s verses marked in your Bible. BEFORE CLASS BEGINS -Mark the verses for today s lesson in your Bible. Read them to see if they use the word ready. Some may use other words of similar meaning. The New American Standard Bible (NASB) uses the word ready in each of these verses. LET S COOK SAY Today we re going to make a ready dessert. ASK What does it mean when something is ready? Or how does it get ready? ASK For example, right now would you be ready to play a song on the piano? Would you be ready to sing the National Anthem at a baseball game? Would you be ready to take a test over the culture of the Micronesian people living in the Pacific (yes, these people are real)? SAY Whether or not you re ready to do something depends on what you ve done beforehand. Are you prepared to do it RIGHT NOW? ASK What are some things that God wants you to be ready for? SAY Listen to one thing that the Bible says God wants you to be ready for. Read from your Bible 1 Peter 3:13-15 ASK What is this verse talking about? What did it say God wants you to be ready to do? (To make a defense to those who might ask you about your faith.) ASK Why might you have to defend what you believe? (Because not everyone believes the truth and some people in life will try to convince you that what you believe is wrong. Some people will even mistreat you because of what you believe.) SAY God wants you to be ready to share your faith in Christ and to stand strong in what you believe. ASK Has anyone ever treated you wrong because of what you believe in Christ? ASK Has anyone ever teased you for doing what is right? What did you do?

SAY God wants us to already be prepared to respond when things like these happen. God also wants us to live with hearts that are ready to share Him with others. Prepare the dessert together as a group. As you eat, continue with the discussion below: SAY While we eat I m going to read a few verses and in each I want you to tell me what God wants you to be ready for. Read from your Bible 1 Timothy 6:17-19 ASK In these verses what did God say He wants you to be ready for? (To share storing up your treasure in heaven.) Read from your Bible Titus 3:1-2 ASK What did God say He wants you to be ready for here? (Ready for every good deed.) Read from your Bible Matthew 24:44 ASK What did God say He wants you to be ready for here? (Ready for the Lord s return. Our lives should always be ready ready for eternity.) ASK How can a person be ready for eternity or the Lord s return. (By giving their lives to Him and living for Him each day. A saved person who isn t living for God, the Bible says, will be ashamed before Him when He returns.) PRAY that your students will live lives that will always be ready to follow Jesus and do what s right. More Kitchen Craze Week 4 - Are You Prepared? YOU WILL NEED: Enough macaroni and cheese for your entire class to have a serving, bowls, spoons; your Bible. LET S COOK ASK What is a pre-prepared or pre-packaged food? (A food that has already been prepared and is ready for you simply to add the final step or two.) ASK Last week we talked about being ready? What are some things we discovered that God wants us to be ready for? SAY Today I want you to prepare yourself because we re talking about being prepared. ASK If you re prepared, what does that mean? (It s another way of saying, I m ready! I ve done the preparations to be ready. ) SAY And today we re going to cook-up one of America s favorite pre-prepared foods.macaroni and Cheese! But first I want you to hear about a place that God has prepared for you. Read John 14:2-3 to your students. ASK What is Jesus talking about? What place? (He s talking about Heaven.) SAY God has prepared a place for you, if you re willing. We ll talk about this in a minute, but first let s cook up something to eat.

Work with your students to cook up the Mac & Cheese. Once everyone has some to eat, continue with the discussion below: SAY Listen carefully to this story about the future to find out more about something God has prepared for you. Read from your Bible Matthew 25:31-40 ASK What is this story about? (It s about the judgment when God separates the sheep, his people who have given their lives to Him, from the goats, those people who are not saved.) ASK What did it say God had prepared for his children? ( inherit the kingdom prepared for you ) ASK What kingdom? What is God talking about? (He s talking about His kingdom, an eternal kingdom that lasts forever with Him. Remember how Jesus said in John 14:2-3, I go to prepare a place for you. ) ASK What had the people in this judgment done? (A lot of good things.) ASK Was He saying that these people get to enter His kingdom because they did good things? Is that how we are saved? (No, they are not sheep because they did good things. Doing good things can t save a person. But once a person is saved, these are the kinds of good things that he should do. In other words, we re NOT saved by doing good things; we do good things BECAUSE we are saved.) ASK How does a person get to go to Heaven or to enter God s kingdom? (By being saved and giving their lives to Jesus?) ASK So the BIG QUESTION is:, Are you prepared for what God has prepared for you? ASK Who would like to share how they know that they will someday be with God in Heaven? (Let a couple of students share their salvation testimonies.) SAY If you re not sure that you would go to heaven and be with God in His kingdom, you can talk to any of our leaders. Any of us would be glad to share with you or to take you to someone who will share with you how you too can know for sure that you will spend eternity with Jesus. Hold up a bag or a piece of uncooked macaroni. SAY This macaroni is prepared but if I don t take it and make it, then it doesn t matter how much preparation has been made, I won t get to experience it. God has prepared a place for you, but if you don t receive his gift of salvation if you never give your life to Him then you ll never get to experience the great things that He has prepared for you. IF YOU HAVE TIME Mac and Cheese Fun Facts* -What we know as Macaroni and Cheese or Mac and Cheese is known by other names in the world. In Britain they would typically just call it macaroni cheese. In the Caribbean, it would be macaroni pie. Long ago in southeastern Connecticut, it was called macaroni pudding, and in some places it might just be called a casserole. -A cheese and pasta casserole known as Makerouns was recorded in an English cookbook in the 14th century. It was made with fresh hand-cut pasta which was sandwiched between a mixture of melted butter and cheese. -Apparently our third president, Thomas Jefferson, liked macaroni. In 1802 he served macaroni pie in the White House and was even known to have imported or to have tried to import pasta, which he called macaroni, after his term as president. Fun Facts came from:

More Kitchen Craze Week 5 - Are You Instant? YOU WILL NEED: Enough Instant Pudding for each child to have a serving, milk, a bowl to mix the pudding in, spoons, bowls or plates, and whip cream if you choose to add a little topping to it; your Bible. BEFORE CLASS BEGINS -Have everything set out to make the pudding as soon as the students arrive. Once it is stirred, it will need to thicken for about 5 minutes or so. It will thicken quicker if you put it in a refrigerator during this time. -Also, mark 2 Timothy 4:2 in your Bible. See if your translation uses the phrase instant in season, out of season. Some translations say to be prepared in season LET S COOK SAY Today we re going to jump into the cooking because today we re making Instant Pudding. Work with your students to mix the pudding in a large bowl. Then continue with the discussion below. Pause the discussion when the pudding is ready so that your students can eat as you continue the discussion. ASK What does it mean to be instant? (Right now. No waiting. Immediate.) ASK Is the pudding really instant? (Not really. After all, we re waiting for it to thicken. It s just called instant because you don t have to cook it.) SAY If the pudding really was instant, it would be ready right now no waiting. And today we re going to find out from the Bible how God wants you to be instant. Read 2 Timothy 4:2 from your Bible. ASK What does this verse teach? ASK What do you think it means to be instant in season and out of season? SAY It means to be prepared, ready-to-go, no waiting, right now, ready to act whether it s a convenient time or not, whether you expected it or not anytime, anywhere in season or out of season. ASK What does God want you to be ready to do? SAY There are several things that God wants you to be ready to do: (1) To proclaim His Word God wants us to know His Word and to be instantly ready to share it. (2) To reprove, rebuke and encourage ASK What does reprove mean? (It means to correct. When you see people doing wrong things, call it to their attention.) ASK What does rebuke mean? (This is a sharper correction, a confrontation to help a person turn from evil.) ASK In what attitude does it say we should encourage others? (With great patience and instruction we should encourage others to know and live for Christ.)

KEY So here s the BIG QUESTION: Are you instant? Are you ready right now to share God s Word, to correct those who are doing wrong, to rebuke those who continue doing wrong and to encourage others to live for Jesus? SAY Maybe a better question would be, are you ready and WILLING? Sometimes we know the right thing to do but it s not always easy. Let me give you a few situations: (This would be a good time to pause, pass around the pudding and to continue talking while your students eat.) SITUATION #1 Jennifer has a friend who has started telling lies. It s nothing major just little things. Like she told some friends that she bought her scarf at well-known store but you were with her when she bought it it was not the store she said. At first you thought she just didn t remember right, but now you re seeing a pattern. She s starting to lie a lot about a bunch of little things. But you re afraid to confront her. What if she denies it? What if she gets mad? Or worse yet, what if she starts telling lies about you? Wouldn t it just be easier to not say anything? ASK What would you do? Are you living out today s Bible verse in this? SITUATION #2 You hear your dad talking to the neighbor across the fence. The neighbor is asking if he knows what happened to his water-hose. Somehow it has a hole in it. Your dad says no, but you happen to know that your dad accidently ran over it with the lawn mower and damaged it. What should you do? Do you correct your dad? If so, how? What would you be ready and willing to do and say? SAY Being instant isn t always easy but it is right. It s also how God has chosen for us to live always ready to do what s right even when it s hard or not convenient. SAY Now I m going to tell you how a person can be instant. Being able to immediately do and say what s right comes from a heart that is already ready and willing to follow Jesus. It s not something that you have to work up. It comes naturally out of your own walk with Christ. PRAY that your students will be instant in sharing the truth and helping others. More Kitchen Craze Week 6 - Are You Delighting? YOU WILL NEED: A toaster, bread and a variety of things to put on the bread i.e., butter, different kinds of jelly, a cinnamon/sugar mix, sugar, School-Safe Peanut Butter, honey, etc; knives, spoons, plates and something to drink; your Bible. BEFORE CLASS BEGINS -Mark Psalm 37 in your Bible. See if your translation uses the word delight in verse 4. Some translations use other words but this is the one for which your kids will be listening. LET S COOK ASK How many of you had breakfast this morning? SAY Whether you did or didn t, we re going to be learning through a breakfast food today.

ASK How many of you like toast? SAY In a few minutes we re going to toast up some bread and then you re going to get to make whatever kind of toast you choose. We re calling it toasted delight, because you can put whatever you want on it. That s the point. You get to put on your toast whatever delights you. While the bread is toasting, tell the students some of the options: SAY I m going to read to you a menu of your options. You can have: plain toast, toast with butter, toast with jelly, toast with butter and jelly, cinnamon toast, toast with butter and sugar, toast with butter and honey, toast with Peanut Butter (School-safe) and honey or whatever other combinations you can think of. Let your students make and eat their toast while you have the following discussion: SAY For six weeks we ve been learning through food items. We ve learned through waffles, Tuna, Mac & Cheese, dessert and pudding. ASK So what do you think we re going to learn through toast today? Any guesses? SAY Our lesson isn t so much about the toast as it is about the toppings. You chose what you wanted. In life we do the same. We live for the things we want. If a person wants fame, they live in a way to become famous. If a person wants to be rich, they live in a way so they will gain more money. ASK But if a person wants to follow Jesus above everything else, what will they do? SAY I m going to read several verses from the Bible but I want you to listen for one key word: delight. When you hear it, listen carefully to what it says. Read from your Bible Psalm 37:1-8 ASK Who heard the word delight? ASK What did it say to delight in? (in the Lord) ASK And what did it say the result of delighting in the Lord would be? (He will give you the desires of your heart.) ASK Does this mean that God will give you whatever you want? That if you want a million dollars, it s yours? (No.) SAY When people look at this verse, sometimes all they hear is I ll get the desires of my heart, but that s not the important part of the verse. The important part is about taking delight in the Lord. SAY Describe to me what a person who delights in the Lord would be like? SAY A person who delights in God will want to know and love and live for God, to please Him and to be pleased in Him. SAY You had a lot of choices for the toppings of your toast and you have a lot of choices in life. But we want you, above all else, to choose Christ. SAY: We want you to REPEAT after me: To know Him (Students: To know Him) To love Him (Students: To love Him) To live for Him (Students: To live for Him) To please Him (Students: To please Him) To be pleased in Him (Students: To be pleased in Him) SAY To be pleased in Him means that He s everything you need and everything you want. Lose all and if you have Jesus, He s enough. PRAY that your students will delight themselves in Christ every day.

Sample Family Devotion Find it. Taste it. Touch it. Make it. Know it. Grow it. See it. Show it. Live it! Below is a sample of a family devotion from Kolby and Mary Beth King's book, 72 Family Devotions For Spiritually Training Kids. Link to this book at Smashwords.com. The purpose of this book is to help families experience God's Word in a colorful, fun, surprising and creative manner; to ignite in them a hunger that leads them to dig in, crawl inside, explore, enjoy and live out God's truth. Sample Devotion - Build a Fort YOU WILL NEED: -1 flashlight -Your Bible marked at Psalm 56:3 and Psalm 18:1-2 GET STARTED Have your family members ransack the house to get pillows, blankets, chairs, and whatever else they can find to build a fort. Take your time making it and let your kids be creative with it. (For example, they might want to make a tunnel entrance.) Build it big enough for everyone to fit inside. From inside the fort use your flashlight to read Psalm 56:3. ASK What is something you re scared of? SHARE Share something you were scared of when you were a child. ASK What should we do when we re scared? (Trust God.) ASK Why can we trust God? (He s faithful. He ll never let you down. He ll always keep His Word, etc.) Read Psalm 18:1-2 from your Bible. ASK How is God like a fort (fortress, stronghold) for you? (In old days people went inside a fortress to be safe. Its walls protected them from harm. God is a shield for those who follow Him and like a fort, you are safe in Him.) ASK Does this mean that bad things will never happen to someone who is living for Jesus? Why or why not? (Bad things still happen to good people, but there s nothing so bad that God can t turn it to your good.) If they want a further answer, explain that sometimes we do wrong things and these bad choices bring bad things into our lives. But sometimes we do everything right and someone else does something wrong and we get hurt because of it. Even so, there s nothing your children will ever do that is so bad that God can t forgive them and there s nothing so bad that can happen to them that God can t turn it around to their good if they love Him and are walking with Him. (See Romans 8:28 for a great promise.) PRAY List prayer requests below and thank God that He will always take care of you. After you're done playing in the fort, feel free to have a pillow fight or time your family to see how fast they can tear the fort down and put everything away. Have fun and enjoy!
