1 Fort Wayne Heathens Quarterly Newsletter Winter 2014 Waes Hael, Good Health! This is Fort Wayne Heathens first newsletter, just in time for the winter season. As I write this, snow lies upon the ground outside, and a winter wind howls upon the air. There are many important announcements in this issue, and other fun tidbits of information as well! I also want to remind the readers that we are in need of writers that are willing to make submissions that fit the season of the issue. 2 Pagan Pride Day 2014 Pagan Pride Day was incredibly successful. Tina Horton, Juliana Dawson, Belinda Hickman, and many more members of the pagan community in Fort Wayne came together to help organize the event. I m sure it was a headache to get the wheels greased, but I feel like the momentum finally reached an apex on the 4th of October when people started showing up and setting up booths. The Incipient Barony of Shadowed Starts (the local chapter of the Society for Creative Anachronism) presented a demonstration that day, Pagan Education Network and Dave Sassman (Circle Sanctuary Reverend) were there as well to lead a ritual and maintain an information booth, we had a booth and Mark Pope lead a blot towards the end of the event. A lot of groups and people came out to enjoy the rituals, information booths, auction, and food that day. Many in this group made personal and professional contacts and won cool prizes in the auction. The event ended with a closing ritual courtesy of Jain and Dave from Three Rivers Pagans, and drumming and galdr by some of our folks! Winter Nights and Fall Finding Our Fall Finding moot was a blast. The altar was beautiful and adorned with items left by the community. Our faining and sumbel were both fulfilling and entertaining. And then there s the FOOD! This community knows how to do the food thing. Winter Nights had some hitches, but in the end we were at the park until sundown enjoying company, snacks, and the fulfillment of honoring our ancestors and the spirits of the land. 3 Lore Night Every second and fourth Tuesday of the month we ve met to discuss the lore in the Poetic Edda at Bon Bon s Coffee House on the corner of Maplecrest and St. Joe. So far we ve covered almost every lay within the Poetic Edda up to our current discussions over the Hávamál. If you d like to come to one of our classes, make sure you re at the coffee house and have a drink ordered before 7 pm, and also bring some note paper and a pencil. We supply copies of the lay we ll be going over, so don t worry about that. We have had a Lore Night event almost every other Tuesday for the part year. This is perhaps our most popular event. 4 Kringla Ingredients 1 cups all-purpose flour 2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg or cardamom (optional) 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, softened 1 cup sugar 1 egg 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 cup buttermilk or sour milk (see note) Directions 1. In a medium bowl, stir together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and, if desired, nutmeg or cardamom; set aside. 2. In a large mixing bowl, beat butter with an electric mixer on medium to high speed for 30 seconds. Add sugar and beat until fluffy. Add egg and vanilla and beat well. Alternately add flour mixture and buttermilk, beating until well mixed. (Dough will be soft and sticky.) Cover and chill at least 5 hours or overnight or freeze for 3 to 4 hours. 3. Divide dough in half; return half to the refrigerator. On a well-floured surface, roll into a 10x5-inch rectangle. With a sharp knife, cut rectangle into twenty 5x1/2- inch strips. Place half of the strips on a baking sheet or tray and place in the refrigerator while shaping and baking the first 10 strips. Roll each strip into a 10-inch-long rope. Shape each rope into a loop, crossing 1-1/2 inches from ends. Twist rope at crossing point. Lift loop over to touch ends and seal, forming a pretzel shape. (Or fold each 10-inch-long rope in half and twist 3 times; seal ends.) Place cookies 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheets. 4. Bake in a 425 degree F oven 5 to 7 minutes or until cookie bottoms are light brown (tops will be pale). Remove from cookie sheets and cool slightly on wire racks. Repeat with remaining dough strips and dough. Serve warm with softened butter, if desired or serve cool. Makes 40 cookies. Glögg Ingredients 1 bottle of red wine 0.5 Liter inexpensive brandy or vodka 10 cardamom pods 1 cinnamon stick (broken down)1/2 orange peel (dried or fresh)1/2 lbs sugar (regular or lumps) Optional additions: 5 cloves, 1/2 cup raisins, 1/2 cup almonds, 5 dried figs Prep Time: 5 minutes Cook Time: 45 minutes Total Time: 50 minutes Heat the wine and brandy spices, fruit, and nuts in a pot (and any optional additions you might like.) Be careful not to boil the mixture; just let it simmer for about 45 minutes. Then, strain through a cloth to remove all additions. Serve your Glogg hot over lumped sugar (or with regular granulated sugar). Optional: You can also serve the Glogg with raisons or almonds. If you'd like the drink to be stronger, use more brandy. This Glogg recipe makes approx 1.5 Liter (close to 1/2 gallon). Recipe by Terri Mapes Note: To make 1 cup sour milk, place 1 tablespoon lemon juice or vinegar in a glass measuring cup. 5 Runic Mullings by Sean Berne I've been studying the runes over the past few weeks. When I first tried to use them for divination years ago, they seemed rigid and shallow to me, being only 24 pieces with stark values and meanings without any of the subtlety of tarot. As I dug in, though, after becoming acquainted with the gods for some time, I began to see a richness that went far beyond some simple divination attempts. We know the Runes formed and influenced the early written-language traditions of Europe, and they are still considered an important item of study to any historian for the continent. We also know that there are deep, subtle spiritual meanings behind each, becoming only deeper still in their interaction and placement with each other, and know that this was considered to be as important as the written communication of information itself to our ancestors. Not only this, but we can go back in history to the graves, bogs, and halls of our predecessors and observe the ways in which they changed the world through the material. We see the labors of the Northern People showing up in history and archeology as progressive and ground-breaking, from the all -forming Elder Futhark, to the Viking discovery of America, to the earliest known spyglass (also invented by Vikings). We see this heritage passed to us, and we know, as Heathens, the spiritual force behind it. One of our Virtues is being productive. We create and form things as the gods do, and we put behind them our ideals. We, as Heathens, know the spiritual component to work. Whatever we do, we know that the history of our people (whether by blood or by spirit), is behind it, and this weight carries on. When you next face an insurmountable task, remember the cleverness and endurance of those whose traditions we follow, and know the sturdiness of your spirit. Faith can get one far, deciding to believe that things will turn out alright despite evidence. When this fails for us, when we fall short of the goal of faith, we can look to this past, this inheritance of ability and skill and meaning, and know what is behind our doing. Most of all, create! Honor this tradition by making something! Whether you change yourself to match the ideals you claim, you shape something raw into something useful or valuable, or you shape silence and stillness into action, work! Let it be an act of worship and devotion. Take your boring job, or your stressful day, or your fears and immobility, and shape them through intent and devotion into something of beauty and form. This, I think, is the most sincere form of devotion we can offer to the gods.

6 Fort Wayne Heathens Programs Hoosier Heathen Veterans This program helps veteran Heathens in Indiana get free resources on VA information, Ásatrú information, networking assistance with local Ásatrúars and heathens, and a free Mjölnir pendant. All you have to do is fill out the form, verify that you have served in the US armed forces, and we'll mail you a package via the USPS.
