Mission Co-op Appeal August Fr. Jesus Briones, SVD will be with us on the weekend of August 27 & 28, 2016 to speak about the many ministries of his religious community the Divine Word Missionaries. They are an international religious community of missionary priests and Brothers serving in 70 countries helping to build chapels, celebrate the sacraments, and spread the Word of God in the remote mission communities. Over 6,000 active missionaries travel to the far corners of the world building hospitals to care for the sick, educating the poor, teaching the hungry to farm, and providing life s necessities like drinkable water, food, and shelter. Hoan Nguyen, CM will be with us on the weekend of August 27 & 28, 2016 to speak about the ministries of the Dominican Sisters of Our Lady of the Rosary Vietnam. They will be speaking at all the Masses, asking for spiritual and financial support for the work of the Dominican Sisters among the poor in the Diocese of Phu Cuong, Vietnam. In addition to teaching the Faith to catechumens and preparing catechists to assist in spreading the Gospel, the Sisters address needs for improved education, housing and basic medical care. This Mission Appeal is part of the Mission Coop Program of our Diocese. 5 THE NARROW GATE Life is difficult, and we need this prepara on, for as Jesus tells his followers, "Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for many... will a empt to enter but will not be strong enough." We need to understand that we are strangers here; we all belong in another place, another me: the reign of God. If we do not know how to follow the right road, to welcome the stranger and help those who are in trouble, how will we find the right way ourselves? If we side with those who want to cast out others who do not resemble themselves in order to keep themselves and their countries somehow "pure," we ourselves will be treated in the same way, and will not enter through that narrow gate. If we consider ourselves to be be er than others, we lack the humility to enter the reign of God. For as Jesus tells us, "some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last." God's discipline will make us strong and kind, peaceful and good.
