This, God has done since the beginning of the world and will do to the end. We believe in one holy, universal Christian church, the communion of saints called from the entire human family. We believe that Christ s work of reconciliation is made manifest in the church as the community of believers who have been reconciled with God and with one another; that unity is, therefore, both a gift and an obligation for the church of Jesus Christ; that through the working of God s Spirit it is a binding force, yet simultaneously a reality which must be earnestly pursued and sought; one which the people of God must continually be built up to attain; that this unity must become visible so that the world may believe that separation, enmity and hatred between people and groups is sin which Christ has already conquered, and accordingly that anything which threatens this unity may have no place in the church and must be resisted, That true faith in Jesus Christ is the only condition for membership of this church, That, in obedience to Jesus Christ, its only head, the church is called to confess and to do things, even though the authorities and human laws might forbid them and punishment and suffering be the consequence; That Jesus is Lord. To the one and only God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, be the honor and the glory for ever and ever. Amen. #### WELCOME, ANNOUNCEMENTS, AND PASSING OF THE PEACE Elder Norm Fikes ####

5 The Reverend Dr. Arthur Reynolds, Guest Preacher A warm welcome to Dr. and Mrs. Reynolds, who attend Hillside frequently. This morning, we are delighted to have Dr. Reynolds as guest preacher. He hails from St. Elizabeth, Jamaica, West Indies where he accepted the call to ministry and graduated from the Union Theological Seminary before coming to the United States. In the U.S., he received a Bachelor of Arts, College of New Rochelle; Master of Divinity, New York Theological Seminary; and Doctor of Ministry, Drew University. Dr. Reynolds served in several pastorates in the West Indies including five congregations concurrently. In the U.S., he served at Laconia Presbyterian Church in Bronx, NY, Christ the Liberator Presbyterian Church in Flint, MI and Grace Presbyterian Church in Baltimore, MD. Under his pastorate, these congregations implemented several new outreach programs in their communities for children and adults. He was also involved in civic, social and cultural activities, partnerships, boards, and chaplaincies in the cities where he pastored. Additionally, the Presbytery and Synod in his jurisdictions had claims on his time for the work of several committees. He has traveled extensively for work and service. Dr. Reynolds and his family relocated to Georgia in 2015 and he is enjoying a slow-paced lifestyle and in his spare time, sports. He and Mrs. Reynolds are parents to Rhon, Tanya, Gayle, Janine, Jamaal, and Kacey. Six Key Financial Principles to Discovering Joy Through Simplicity and Generosity 1. Pay your tithe and offering first. (2 Corinthians 9:6-7) 2. Create a budget and track your expenses. (Proverbs 27:23-24) 3. Simplify your lifestyle (live below your means). (Matthew 6:19-33) 4. Establish and emergency fund. (1 Timothy 6:9-12) 5. Pay off your credit cards, use cash/debit cards for purchases, and use credit wisely. (Proverbs 22:7) 6. Practice long-term savings and investing habits. (Luke 14:28)
6 Discipleship Expectations for Hillside I will be a partner in the ministry of my church by discovering my gifts and talents and using them by being equipped to serve by my pastors by developing a servant s heart Serve one another with the particular gifts God has given each of you (1 Peter 4:10 Phillips). God Gave some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up (Ephesians 4:11-12). Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who [took on] the very nature of a servant (Phil. 2:3-4, 7). A major item of business before the 222 nd General Assembly (2016) is the election of a Stated Clerk of the General Assembly. The Stated Clerk Nominations Committee, elected by the 221 st General Assembly (2014), has been diligent in its work and has been careful to follow the process detailed in the Standing Rules of the General Assembly found in the Manual of the General Assembly. At the conclusion of the final interviews, the committee selected the Reverend Dr. J. Herbert Nelson to recommend to the 222 nd General Assembly (2016) for election as the next Stated Clerk of the General Assembly. J. Herbert Nelson II Reverend Dr. J. Herbert Nelson II serves as Director of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) Office of Public Witness (OPW) in Washington, D.C. The OPW is a prophetic office of the PC (USA) that implements the social justice policies approved by General Assembly. Nelson s role in leading the OPW includes meeting with congregational leaders and their offices; constituent education and training for Presbyterian congregations, members and governing bodies; and partnering with ecumenical, interfaith and other advocacy groups on Capitol Hill. Since coming to Washington, D.C. six years ago, his leadership has transformed the OPW into one of the most visible offices in the denomination among all generations. Nelson is a third generation Presbyterian Pastor, who before coming to Washington, served as Founder/Pastor of Liberation Community Presbyterian Church (LCC) in Memphis, Tennessee. The ministry chartered on April 11, 1999 with a mission to evangelize the poor to the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A). As an African centered ministry, LCC received the prestigious Walton Grant, which is awarded by the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) for outstanding work in New Church Development. The ministry was the first African American Church developed in the Presbytery of Memphis (now Mid-South) in forty-six years. During his tenure in Memphis, Dr. Nelson served as Associate Director of the Benjamin L. Hooks Institutes for Social Change at the University of Memphis. He also served as an education consultant, providing staff development training for Teacher Specialists, Curriculum Specialists and Principal Leaders who provide assistance for low-performing schools. Nelson s first pastoral call after ordination in 1986 was to serve as Pastor of St. James Presbyterian Church, a redeveloping congregation located in a thriving, middle-class area in Greensboro, North Carolina. During his eleven-year tenure as Pastor of St. James, Nelson became a noted community leader, preacher and advocate for justice issues both within the Church and community. A native of Orangeburg, South Carolina, he completed Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, NC (Presbyterian University founded in 1865 third generation graduate), with a B.A. degree in Political Science/Urban Studies in In 1985, he earned the Master of Divinity degree from Johnson S. Smith Seminary at the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta, Georgia. He received his Doctor of Ministry degree from Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary in J. Herbert (as he is commonly called) has served the PC(USA) at every council level. Nelson is married to Reverend Gail Porter Nelson, and they have one daughter.
