1 April NewsleLer Celebra3ng God s Presence In Our Lives Χριστὸς ἀνέστη! Ἀληθῶς ἀνέστη! Christus resurrexit! Resurrexit vere! Kristo Amefufuka! Amefufuka kweli kweli! Le Christ est ressuscité! En verité il est ressuscité! Cristo resucitó! En verdad resucitó! Tha Crìosd air èiridh! Gu dearbh, tha e air èiridh! Atgyfododd Crist! Yn wir atgyfododd! य स मस ह ज़न द ह गय ह! ह यक़ नन, व ह ज़न द ह गय ह! קם! באמת קם!המשיח Ua ala aʻe nei ʻo Kristo! Ua ala ʻiʻo nō ʻo Ia! ハリストス復活! 実に復活! Alleluia, The Lord is risen! The Lord is risen indeed, Alleluia! This is our tradi3onal Easter Acclama3on. It is one of the earliest Chris3an sayings that followed What the heck do you mean He is not in there? That the bounds of death could not hold Jesus is central to our belief as followers of Christ. It fulfills the promise that all who trust Jesus will not taste death forever. It is the language we use to describe the mysterious. Some3mes we have a challenging 3me with another people s language. It may be a difference in the spoken and wrilen word, but omen it is a difference in the language of culture. These differences can arise in worldview, poli3cs, denomina3ons, and family life. Our culture as Presbyterians and Episcopalians informs us theologically and liturgically. Our culture as Chris3ans informs all these aspects of our daily life and culture. The word culture is derived from the word soil. It is decidedly apropos that we derive our growth from the soil we are planted in. If our soil is nutri3ous and balanced, we grow strong and healthy. If our soil is dominated by one nutrient or another we become imbalanced in our growth. Language is how we water this soil, this culture. Krista Tippet spoke the other night on the language of civility and generosity. I took away from this lecture, that generous ques3ons inform generous responses. My thoughts on this are the same as we wrestle with the grand theological ques3ons. Do we ask generous ques3ons of God and scripture or do read our own language and culture into God and scripture? When we ask awkward ques3ons of the resurrec3on or read, as Frederick Buechner says, our fingers crossed at the same parts of the Nicene Creed we par3cipate in the story, when we know it all we exclude ourselves. It is Easter!! Jesus is raised from the dead, and while we may not be able to grasp it in totality, we trust. We trust that God is Good and, in that goodness, and love for crea3on we rest in the knowledge of the unknowable. I ask each of us to discern a language to elucidate the trusts and beliefs we hold, and to ask generous ques3ons and engage in generous and thoughyul dialogue in order that we may con3nue this journey to God with 3lled and loamy soil, ready to grow in the knowledge and love of God. Peace and All Good, George+

Come one, Come all to the Spring Day of Service! We will be heading downtown to the Over The Rhine Community Center for a day of fun and service. The Indian Hill Church and several of its members are involved with a project called Saturday Hoops. Saturday Hoops is A growing group of friends and vulnerable kids who get together on Saturday mornings (January through May) for some fun, faith, and positive role modeling through a variety of activities. We are cheerful givers and hard workers. Our goal is to connect one-on-one with our kids and have them feel important, loved, and confident. We do this by playing basketball together, creating art, circuit training, weekly speakers, healthy snacks, lunch and much more. This year we re focusing on the importance of being Overcomers and all the great things that come from overcoming challenges. While it started 17 years ago with just basketball, Saturday Hoops is now so much more. During our day of service we will be in charge of working with the kids on a simple art project provided by the church, and providing and serving lunch to around 200 people. We will partner with Venice on Vine for the catering. Venice on Vine, another recipient of IHC funds, is an organization that provides culinary training and job opportunities for underprivileged adults in Over the Rhine. IHC is generously donating the lunches for this day so we hope you will join us in serving them. If you would like to come down and participate in our day of service please contact Holly Dewees. The activities take place between 9:30 and 12:30. You can join us for part of the morning or all of it. No matter how long you stay, make sure you check out the newly renovated Reading Room. Indian Hill Church provided the funds to create this wonderful space to give the kids a place to read and be read to. Everyone loves spending time in the Reading Room. We hope to see you there!! 5 Mutual Encouragement so that we may be mutually encouraged by each other s faith, both yours and mine (Rom. 1:12). April 15, 2018, 11:30 AM Come hear inspirational speaker, Erin Focke, over lunch! Erin has been active in Presbyterian for the past three years. She has the responsibility of maintaining our PW s relationship with Serrv.org to support artisans around the world. She is excited to have had the opportunity to represent you on the 2017 Presbyterian Global Exchange to Indonesia and looks forward to sharing her experience with each and every one of you. Every three years, a group of Presbyterian women travels to another part of the world to hear the joys and pain that our sisters there experience, and to share faith stories and ministries with one another. It is a global exchange because the following year, a group of women from the same part of the world is invited to itinerate in synods and participate in the Churchwide Gathering of Presbyterian, to share their stories. Building bridges of understanding, as sisters in Christ we will: learn how to live respectfully in a multifaith culture and encourage and accompany one another as together we seek a more peaceful and just world. Erin Focke is a native Cincinnatian who grew up in Bond Hill and currently lives in Colerain Township. She attends Bond Hill Presbyterian Church where she is the secretary and Clerk of Session. She received her Master s in Elementary Education and Bachelor s in Communications from the University of Cincinnati. You may think that with her education she would be a teacher, but that was not the path God had for her. Instead she felt called to make a difference by focusing on another of her passions, Girl Scouts. Erin is the Director of Regional Services at Girl Scouts of Western Ohio where, for the past ten years, she has focused on building girls of courage, confidence and character who make the work a better place by empowering and supporting staff and volunteers to provide girls with the opportunities to unleash their inner G.I.R.L. (Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-taker, Leader)! Erin is the oldest of four girls, and while she doesn't have children of her own, she does have a fur baby, Cinnamon, a 12 year old miniature poodle. Erin loves singing, reading, spending time on the water (in the summer), sewing (which she would like to do more of) and crafting in general. What: FREE Speaker & Lunch (Servatti s sandwich, chips, fruit, and cookie tray) When: Sunday, April 15, 2018 Where: Indian Hill Church - Guild Hall 6000 Drake Road, Cincinnati, OH Time: 11:30 AM - 1:00 PM
6 Adult Forum April 2018 April 8, 15, and 22: The Political Industrial Complex President Eisenhower once famously warned of the military-industrial complex. Now Katherine Gehl and Michael Porter of Harvard Business School are warning us of the political industrial complex. While governing is supposed to represent the public interest, Gehl and Porter argue that politics is, in fact, a thriving private business. Unfortunately, the public good is no longer its target customer. In this three-week series, we examine politics as a business and current attempts to regulate that business. April 8: Gehl-Porter: Why Competition in the Politics Industry is Failing America: A Strategy for Reinvigorating Our Democracy Current political practice is designed to fail at governing, Gehl and Porter conclude in their report, named above. How did Gehl and Porter reach this stunning conclusion? How would they redirect political practice to serve the public interest? We will listen to their podcast to Harvard Business School alums. Nancy Lippincott will lead the discussion. April 15: The Redistricting Amendment on the May Ballot Gerrymandering: widely scorned as the process by which representatives choose their voters rather than voters choose their representatives. What s to be done about it? One alternative a proposed Constitutional amendment is on the May ballot. It could have a significant impact on the way Ohioans are represented in Congress. Bette Evanshine from the League of Voters will give us the background leading up to the current ballot proposal and tell us about its provisions. Bette is one of the League members most actively involved in understanding redistricting practices in Ohio. She will tell us where redistricting stands now. April 22: Election Reform Across the Country Each state controls its own election laws. Therefore, redistricting, primary elections, candidate and voter eligibility requirements must be made state by state. Jane Anderson, adjunct associate professor of political science at the University of Cincinnati, will speak about reform around the country, including recent Supreme Court decisions and cases in states like North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. What are the challenges? What are the arguments for and against reform? What is happening now?
