2 First Reading: Job 7:1-4, 6-7 In this passage, Job laments the drudgery and pain all people sometimes experience in life. He talks of troubled days and restless nights. But he does mention that the days move along swiftly, which can remind us that our time here on earth is quite limited and should be well spent. Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 9:16-19, Paul explains to the Corinthians that he has no choice, but must preach the gospel. He tells of making himself all things to all people, in order to save some of them. He reminds them that he does this willingly, in the hope of sharing in the blessings of the gospel. Gospel: Mark 1:29-39 FEBRUARY 4, 2018: FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Jesus cured Simon and Andrew s mother of a fever, then others with illnesses or demons came to see him. He cured those who were ill, and cast out the demons of the others. Then he went off and prayed alone until his followers sought him out. Jesus and his disciples then moved on to other villages to proclaim the good news. A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON THE SUNDAY READINGS HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time - February 4, 2018 Rising very early before dawn, he left and went to a deserted place, where he prayed. Simon and those who were with him pursued him and on finding him said: Everyone is looking for you. He said to them, Let us go on to the nearby villages that I may preach there also. For this purpose have I come. So he went into their synagogues preaching and driving out demons throughout the whole of Galilee. Jesus the healer, Jesus the pray-er, Jesus the preacher and teacher. A few verses capture His ministry and message that He offers. Fast forward and the need is the same: everyone is looking for you. Many are looking for fame, comfort, riches, but not for what Jesus has brought. We are called to help them find the Lord who means so much to us. Who is it that has fallen away from the church? They are still loved by the Lord. Who do I know caught in a bad habit, a vice, or depression? They are still loved by the Lord. What they need is someone who looked for the Lord, has found Him and wishes to share that same positive experience with them. As I live my conviction and faith, I bring Him to them, and they to Him.
