2 SEPTEMBER 30, th Sunday of Ordinary Time First Reading: Numbers 11:25-29 Two men not considered prophets by the people began to prophesize, and this offended those who did not feel they were true prophets. But Moses explained that prophets are chosen by God, not the people. Second Reading: James 5:1-6 James speaks out strongly against people who become rich by cheating their workers. He claims the wealth they have dishonestly collected will be a testimony against them on judgment day. Gospel: Mark 9:38-43, 45, Jesus explains to his disciples that it is acceptable for a person who is not part of their group to speak in his name, but he does warn them that anyone who tries to lead his followers astray will be severely punished. Jesus also discusses personal failing and the importance of taking whatever steps are necessary to avoid them. A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON THE SUNDAY READINGS HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly Twenty-sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 30, 2018 The Lord came down in the cloud and spoke to Moses: Taking some of the spirit that was on Moses, the Lord bestowed it on the seventy elders, and as the spirit came upon them they prophesied Are you jealous for my sake? Would that all the people of the Lord were prophets! Would that the Lord would bestow his spirit on them all. Anyone who gives you a cup of water to drink because you belong to Christ, amen, I say to you, will surely not lose his reward. On the day of our baptism, when we were anointed with the Holy Chrism we were told that we participate with Jesus as - priest, prophet and king. A prophet is a spokesperson for God. We read from the Major Prophets in the Old Testament, and know the teaching of the minor ones, as Micah, Amos, Hosea and others. Some say the age of prophets ended at the close of the first testament. No, that is not true. Because we too are called to witness to Christ, we too are spokespersons for the Lord, His prophets today. We speak as witnesses by our actions. We speak as teachers of His word. We bring the call to conversion to a needy world. We find the witness of prophets in Saint Archbishop Oscar Romero, Blessed Stanley Rother and the religious martyrs of El Salvador. They are the prophetic voices, calling out for justice, an end to oppression, as agents for peace. Would that the Lord would bestow He has, now it is our turn.

Please make sure all pets are leashed or secured in a kennel. This Program can be utilized for your Sunday Contributions as well as any Holy Day Collection and all Archdiocesan collections. NON PERISHABLE FOOD DONATIONS: Donations of nonperishable food items are collected in the back of St. Matthew's Church and are picked up and delivered after the 12 O'clock mass on Sunday to St. Peter s Food Pantry in Yonkers. Non perishable food donations can be dropped off at any Mass. Your donations are greatly needed and appreciated. PLEASE: Do not leave clothing in the church. We are unable to accept donations of clothes. Any clothing that is left in the church has to be discarded. Thank you for your understanding.

5 As we learned last month, when the angel appeared the third time to Lucia, Francisco, and Jacinta, he came carrying a chalice in his hand and above it he was holding a host from which drops of blood fell into the chalice. He placed the host on Lucia s tongue. To Jacinta and Francisco he gave to drink the contents of the chalice. As he distributes the Sacred Species to the children, he says: Take and drink the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ, horribly outraged by ungrateful men. Make reparation for their sins and console your God. He prostrates himself on the ground again and repeats three more times the prayer he taught the children during this third and last apparition. Then the angel disappears. On this occasion, as on the previous two, Francisco not heard the angel s voice. He has difficulty understanding the meaning of the things experienced, and he says to Lucia, Lucia, the angel gave you Holy Communion, but what did he give Jacinta and me? Before Lucia can answer him, Jacinta gives him the answer saying, It is the same thing, Holy Communion. Didn t you see that it was the blood that dropped from the host? Now I understand, he says. I did feel that God was in me, but I did not know how. Then he kneels on the ground with Jacinta and remains there a long time repeating the latest prayer the angel taught them. WELCOME TO OUR NEW ORGANIST AT OUR LADY OF PERPETUAL HELP CHRISTOPHER McGINNIS Christopher McGinnis has been playing piano since he was 5 years old. He was classically trained privately at the age of 7 at The Julliard School in NYC. He has also studied privately with some of the most gifted Jazz pianists in the world. He has been a very disciplined musician at a very young age. He started sharing his gift of music and has been a professional musician since, he was 10 years old. He has played and toured around the United States at venues like the Jazz Standard, The Bitter End, Madison Square Garden, to name a few. When Christopher was approached to play the organ and sing for the Archdiocese, he was only 15 years old. After years of playing funerals, weddings, Sunday masses and organizing different church choirs for several different churches, Christopher is honored to accept the Musical Director position for us and looks forward to sharing his music with this parish.
