1 November 2017 TIDINGS ST. JOHN S UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 109 E. 14th Street, Davenport, IA CELEBRATION OF ALL SAINTS November 4-5, 2017 All Saints in the United Methodist Church is a day of remembrance for the saints. We celebrate the communion of the saints as we remember those who have died in our local church. For this reason, the names of people in the congregation or related to those in our congregation who have died during the past year will be read at our services. As the name is read, a candle is lit and a bell is rung. St. John s United Methodist Church will be remembering persons who have died during the past year during all our weekend worship services on November 4 & 5. A special and traditional time of remembrance will be observed during the 8:30 a.m. service with the entrance of the Bell Banners. Candles will be lit, names of departed loved ones will be read and, as is our tradition, banners adorned with bells in remembrance of departed loved ones will be part of this special worship service. Family members are invited to bring a bell to adorn the banners. Bells (small gold bell with ribbon loop) should be brought to the church office before November 3 at noon to be a part of these banners. Thanks for your generous giving Thanks to the people of St. John s for giving to Hurricane Harvey in September when over $6600 was given. In October, support was needed for the Hurricanes in Florida and destruction in Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands. You can still give to these disasters,: Just mark your gift for Hurricanes. We do not know what will be done in regard to the wildfires in the west. Stay tuned!! CANDLELIGHT HEALING SERVICE Are you facing troubles? Do you feel like it's a losing battle? Last day to donate elsewhere was September 19. PRAYER AT ST. JOHN S PRAYER LEADS TO A SHINING FACE It is written of John Wesley: He thought prayer to be more his business than anything else, and I have seen him come out of his closet with a serenity of face next to shining. Let your life shine through continually talking to and listening to God! You can fill out a prayer card at worship and state if you want the request to be on the Prayer Bookmark or the prayer chain. The prayer chain is more private and includes a large variety of prayer concerns. It is important that we get permission to put the prayer request on the bookmark and/or chain. Some people want their prayer needs to be just between them and God. It is also very much appreciated when you let us know of changes in your prayer concern! FOOD PANTRY Sharon Imming, St. John s Food Pantry Coordinator Sure feels like winter has arrived. I don't know about you, but I am not ready. With that being said, we need hot chocolate for the food pantry. We received 147 items for October. We received 110 packages of oatmeal, 41 cans of vegetables just to name a few. The weekend of October and November 4-5 will be the Thanksgiving Baskets food collection for the Center. Slips will be handed out at all services on those weekends. Please return your donations by November 11 and 12. As you take a slip/slips, you may get one that doesn't go into the food baskets. The Center is hoping to fill 200 baskets. Last year we collected 1,069 items. We can do better this year. Watch the ads in the coming weeks. Monetary donations are always accepted. ST. JOHN S CHRISTMAS CANTATA This year s Christmas Cantata Come Ye Faithful by Hal Hopson will be Sunday, December 10, in the Sanctuary. We would like to have more singers! If you are interested in singing with us, we practice each Thursday evening in the Choir Room. For more information, you can contact Mitzi Harris or leave a message in the church office. 4
