7 In our last installment, Session began deposing witnesses in the case of Mr. Laird being accused of slandering Mr. Wilkeson by telling people that Mr. Wilkeson had taken wheat from Mr. Walker s mill without permission. We resume this week with the deposition of Mr. Isaac Walker, owner of the mill Isaac Walker, being sworn saith Sometime last September, I think it was, as I was going to Mr. Lairds for wheat, I overtook Mr. Wilkeson, a short distance from my mill. He asked me how I was coming on seeding. I told him I was then going to Mr. Lairds for seed wheat. He told me that he had got some of Mr. Laird s wheat and that I might tell Mr. Laird he had got it. After going to Mr. Lairds, and making known my business, I told what Mr. WIlkeson had said. Mr. Laird seemed to think it strange, and said Wilkerson had never asked him for it, but he might have asked his sons and they might have given him permission to take the wheat. This is the substance of what happed at that time, according to my best recollection. Sometime after this, I can t tell how long, Mr. Laird came to my house and spoke about the wheat that Wilkeson had taken. He said Wilkeson had not asked his sons for the wheat- that he had inquired of them and they said they had not been asked for it. Mr. Laird stated that he had been in Noblestown and that it was reported there that Mr. Wilkeson had taken, some said three some said six and some eight or nine bushels and that if he did not prosecute Wilkeson - others would prosecute. Question by Session Did Mr. Laird allow you to take wheat out of his garner, without the presence of any one to see it measured? Answer There was nothing said, particularly on that subject but I took it myself and without the presence of any others. Q by Session Did Mr. Laird admit at any time, in your hearing, that he possibly might have given Wilkeson permission to take wheat but had no recollection of so doing? A No, but always asserted that neither he nor his sons had even given liberty. Q How much do you suppose was in the bag that Wilkeson informed you he was taking home of Laird s wheat? 7 A I think about three bushels. Q Did you see the garner, out of which this wheat was said to be taken, soon after you saw Wilkeson taking home the wheat? A Yes, I think I saw it, about three hours after. Q How much, do you suppose, from the appearance of the garner, had been recently taken out of it?

8 A I suppose about three bushels, about the same amount I had seen in Wilkeson s bag. Q - Do you certainly know the garner, out of which Wilkeson took the wheat? A I know from the appearance of wheat, being recently taken out of the garner, to which I have alluded, that he took it out of it, as certainly as I know anything which I did not see. Q Do you know whether he took wheat at any other time? A No Q - At the time that I went to your house, did I not ask you, if you knew, how that report of Wilkeson s taking wheat out of the garner got out. A I don t recollect, but it is likely you did. Q Did I not ask you if there was any person in the mill, when Wilkeson took the wheat, and did you not say, that you thought, that one of the Mr. McClemmons was? A I said that Mr. McClemmons was in the mill. Q Did Wilkeson ask you to go and see him measure the wheat? A No! Q Did you hear anything of the Noblestown reports, referred to above, before Laird informed you of them? A No Q When Laird told you what some persons in Noblestown said, did he give you the names of those persons? A No, but that several persons had told him. Mr. McClemmons here stated that he now recollects in addition to his former testimony as follows: At the time Laird spoke of a considerable want being in his garner, I asked him if had had measured his wheat when he laid it in the mill? He answered that he had not, but his boys had, and had kept an account of it and whatever was wanting, he intended to make Wilkeson pay for it. To be continued. Newsletter articles are due in the church office no later than December 13 th for the January Newsletter. to marlett@bethanypresby.org 8 Name Tag Sunday today is under the leadership of Brad Crabb. Please wear your name tag as we get to know one another. Welcome someone you don t know. THIS WEEK AT BETHANY

Reading Isaiah 40:1-5 Every Valley Joseph Martin Every valley will be lifted high and every mountain made low. Every valley shall be lifted and the crooked be made whole. Sound the trumpet, for the glory of the Lord shall be revealed Come, O come, Emmanuel and ransom captive Israel, that mourns in lowly exile here, until the Son of God appear, Rejoice, rejoice, give thanks, and sing! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel, shall come to thee, rejoice! Every valley will be lifted high and every mountain made low. Every valley shall be lifted and the crooked be made whole. 15 Reading Luke 1:46-55 Lo, How a Rose E er Blooming Arr. Joel Raney Lo, how a Rose e er blooming from tender stem hath sprung, of Jesse s lineage coming as saints of old have sung. It came, a floweret bright, amid the cold of winter, when half-spent was the night. Isaiah twas foretold it, the Rose I have in mind; with Mary we behold it, the virgin mother kind, To show God s love aright she bore to us a Savior, when half-spent was the night. Lo, how a Rose e er blooming from tender stem hath sprung, of Jesse s lineage coming as saints of old have sung. To show God s love aright God gave to us a Savior, when half-spent was the night. Lo, how a Rose e er blooming. Reading Mark 1: 1-8 In the Bleak Midwinter Gustav Holst / arr. Keith Christopher In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind may moan, Earth stood still as iron, water like a stone; Snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow, In the bleak midwinter, long, long ago. Heaven cannot hold Him, nor the earth sustain; Heav n and earth shall flee away when He comes to reign. In the bleak midwinter a stable place sufficed; Lord our God incarnate, Jesus Christ. Angels and archangels may have gathered there, Cherubim and seraphim thronged in the air. But His mother only, in her maiden bliss, Worshipped the beloved with a holy kiss. What can I give Him, poor as I am? If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb. If I were a wiseman, I would do my part; Yet, what can I give Him, Give to Him my heart.

16 Reading Matthew 1: Sweet Little Jesus Boy Robert MacGimsey / arr. Don Hart Sweet little Jesus Boy, they made You be born in a manger. Sweet little Holy Child, Didn t know who you were. Didn t know You d come to save us, Lord; TO take our sins away. Our eyes were blind, we couldn t see, We didn t know who You were. Long time ago You were born, Born in a manger low, Sweet little Jesus Boy. The world treats You mean, Lord, Treats me mean too, But that s how things are down here: We don t know who You are. You have shown us how, we are trying, Master, You have shown us how even when You were dying. Just seems like we can t do right, look how we treated You. But please, Sir, forgive us, Lord, we didn t know twas You. Sweet little Jesus Boy born long time ago. Sweet little Holy Child, we didn t know who You were. We didn t know who You were. Sweet little Jesus Boy. Reading Luke 2:1-14 Gesu Bambino Pietro Yon / arr. Mark Hayes Karalee Nelson, Soprano soloist When blossoms flowered mid the snows upon a winter night was born the Child, the Christmas Rose, the King of Love and Light. The angels sang, the shepherd sang, the grateful earth rejoiced. And at His blessed birth the stars their exultation voiced: O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord. Again the heart with rapture glows to greet the holy night that gave the world its Christmas Rose, its King of Love and Light. Let ev ry voice acclaim His name, the grateful chorus swell. From paradise to earth He came that we with Him might dwell. O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord.

17 Reading Luke 2:15-20 Sing to the Child K. Lee Scott Shepherds were watching near Bethlehem, under the starry night sky, Suddenly angels sang; Tidings of joy outrang: Praises to God on high. Sing to the Child, sing to the Savior, Sing with the angels round Bethlehem. Glory to God, joy to all people, Sing to the holy Child. After the angels had gone away, Quickly they ran to the stall. And, as the angel said, Thre in a manger bed rested the Lord of All. Sing to the Child, sing to the Savior, Sing with the angels round Bethlehem. Glory to God, joy to all people, Sing to the holy Child. Joseph and Mary, his mother mild, Welcomed the shepherds that night. Bowing, they worshiped him, Praising with cherubim Hon ring this Babe of Light. Sing to the Child, sing to the Savior, Sing with the angels round Bethlehem. Glory to God, joy to all people, Sing to the holy Child. Let us then worship and honor Him, Joining with angels above. Let us with shepherds fall there in the lowly stall, Praising the Lord of Love. Sing to the Child, sing to the Savior, Sing with the angels round Bethlehem. Glory to God, joy to all people, Sing to the holy Child. Sing to this wondrous Child!
