1 NEWSLETTER ST PAUL S LUTHERAN CHURCH 226 E Madison Street Waterloo, WI (920) Volume LIX Number 10 October 2018 Pastor Robert W. Kosky, Jr. (920) Office (608) Cell Office Hours: Please see calendar, Hours are subject to change pastorrobb@frontier.com stpaul226@frontier.com INSIDE Inside St. Paul s Page 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 Birthdays Page 3 Business Directory Page 4 Calendar Page 7 Who s Serving? Page 8 From Pastor s Desk Page 9 Reformation Sunday On October 31 st, 1517, Martin Luther, a Catholic Priest, monk, and professor of Old Testament at the University of Wittenberg posted 95 Theses, or statements, about the church s practice of selling indulgences which amounted to granting people the forgiveness of sins in return for money. At the time, the indulgences were being sold to pay off the debt of the Archbishop of Mainz and to help rebuild St. Peter s Cathedral in Rome. Martin Luther s criticism of the church, and the support he received from the prince of Saxony who protected him from punishment by the Holy Roman Emperor, opened the flood gates of ideas from Christian theologians across Europe, challenged the power of the Roman Catholic Church, and changed the course of Christianity. 1
2 Inside St. Paul s September Council Highlights Ray Unrein addressed the council regarding the recording of our services. We have the capability to record and stream thanks to a donation from the Junkers. The council decided to request that videographers be trained and switch as soon as this is done. We can post our services on Facebook, the web, and Youtube. Sue and Andy Quamme will work on setting up a Youtube account. Pastor will talk to Megan regarding some training she will need to upload and head these streams. Free training is available from the city's employer. Approved June, July, and August treasurer's reports and are aware that two persons are necessary to do this job. Sunday school started on the 16th. Current enrollment is small but it is hoped that from the invitation mailing that more children will come. Bibles will be given out to some of the children September 23rd. Michelle also stated that they hope to do more family movie nights and Mr. Webster will do a sports event. Voted to send the 2016 Lenten box offerings to PAVE as was previously decided. Voted to change the Youth Fund name to Camp Scholarship Fund. Giving for 2018 is behind Pastor looked into this shortfall and found the giving members are giving less than they did the previous year. Mutual Community Mission Group is currently serving 14 children. Meals are packed Thursday, delivered to the school by 1pm Friday, where they are distributed by the school. Monetary gifts are best, due to the restraints of food types and sizes. The Youth Mission trip will be in June, 2019 and go to Logan, West Virginia. The council approved a fundraiser for Oct. 6th. It will be a brat and burger event at the Piggly Wiggly. 9 From the Pastor s Desk Re: Reformation. Reform. Remember. Repent. Return. Reborn. Renew. Re means again. It s a good prefix for us Christians, because we keep having to repeat, to do things again and again. On October 28th, we celebrate the Reformation which took place 500 years ago. It was a time when the Christian Church in Europe was being re formed. Yet we talk about the Lutheran Church as being the Church Reformed, and Always Reforming. The church has to keep re-forming itself in order to be true to the Gospel message, as well as being able to keep up with the Holy Spirit who is always leading us into new places and ways of thinking and proclaiming God s message. We are called to remember Jesus, his love for us, his teachings, his sacrifice for us, his promise of new life for us. Jesus calls on us to Repent. It s not good enough for us to repent once or to confess our sins only once. It is something we do again and again. Repenting and returning to God over and over in our lives because, after all, we wander away from God again and again in our lives. We need to be reborn into our faith again and again. We need our lives to be renewed. This is why, as Christians, we are always welcome to return to the church. We will always find that we are in need of God s love, of God s mercy, of God s forgiveness, and we will always find that God is willing to welcome us back. It s October. It s a new month. It s time to return again. It s time to renew your faith again. It s time to repent, to reform, to be reborn again and yet again. This is for all of us. We are all the same here. We are all in need of returning to God s grace. I ll show you what I mean with the following two examples: 1. Cedric has not been to church in years. There are many and various reasons for this, some better than others, but he just hasn t managed to get there. However, Cedric is welcome to return. To come in and worship, confess his sins, sing the hymns, receive the body and blood of Jesus in communion and the forgiveness of his sins. He is welcome to renew his relationship with God, and God and the heavenly angels will rejoice. 2. Adelle goes to church every week or nearly every week and she s often there in the middle of the week as well. Adelle also, is welcome to return. To come to worship again this week, to confess her sins, sing the hymns, receive the body and blood of Jesus in communion and the forgiveness of her sins. She is welcome to renew her relationship with God, and God and the heavenly angels will rejoice. This is how it works. Every day, every week, month, year, we return. As we sing: Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love. Your Pastor in Christ, Pastor Robb 9
