1 Calvary United Methodist Church July 29 - Aug 4, 2018 SPECIAL ONE-TIME CHARGE CONFERENCE: Sunday, August 12th after the 11:00 a.m. service This special one-item charge conference is being held to vote on a resolution authorizing sale of the rental property at 9 Paradise Avenue, Mt. Airy, MD. The resolution will, on behalf of the charge conference, direct and authorize the Calvary UMC Corporation s Board of Directors (Trustees) to take all necessary steps to carry out the actions and to cause to be executed any necessary contract or other written instrument. All members are welcome to attend. However, the voting members of the charge conference are those elected to the Church Council and any ordained clergy holding their membership in Calvary United Methodist Church.

2 GOD S KITCHEN CLOSED July 26-August 30th. It will resume September 6th. Safe Church Committee will be meeting Wednesday, August 1, 6:30-8:00PM in Room 109. With many of our regular volunteers away for summer vacations, we are having difficulty finding people to be greeters, ushers, and scripture readers. If you like to help out, please sign up for a slot or two in any (or all) of those positions over the next few months. And who knows, maybe you'll enjoy it so much you'll want to keep helping out beyond the summer. 3 BLESSING OF THE BACKPACKS: On Sunday, August 26 at the 9:20 a.m. service, we will offer a special blessing for all students, teachers, and school staff who are beginning the new school year. We will also recognize and bless those who serve as teachers for children, youth and adults here at Calvary. This is a great time to invite friends, neighbors, or family who have children or adults in the school system to come start the school year off right with prayer! We will also be offering opportunities to adopt children in need of backpacks and school supplies. NEW THIS YEAR! Calvary is partnering with Dan Hozhabri from Keller Williams Realty to collect much needed supplies for our Mount Airy and Twin Ridge teachers. These opportunities will be displayed the white board outside the Good Shepherd Hall and will be available as soon as we receive the necessary information from the schools involved. BWC is hosting a photo retreat! Photography can open up new ways of seeing and understanding God, the world, and our lives. Learn to take better pictures, integrate the power of photography into your spiritual life and church, and rediscover the sacred power of images. October 19-21; Camp Manidokan - The retreat begins Friday evening and closes with lunch on Sunday. Participants may also choose to attend Saturday's events only. The full weekend retreat, which includes workshops, lodging and meals, is $150. To attend the full weekend including workshops and meals only, but not lodging is $90. Saturday only (workshops and meals) is $46. This event is adult only. Must be at least 18-years-old to attend. See the BWC website for more information! 3

4 Sunday School will start again in the Fall! CAMP JOY RECAP August 5th during worship the youth and adults will share some of their experiences from the week. Hear how our youth were able to be the hands and feet of Christ. SANDY SPRINGS ADVENTURE PARK AUGUST 19 - Come climb the trees and ride the ziplines for a fun afternoon. Please let Jenn Shipley know if you want to attend. RSVP must be made by Monday, July 31st! Cost is $36 per person. 4

5 Summer Sunday School at 9:20 a.m. for children entering Kindergarten through 5th grade in the auditorium. Children begin in the Sanctuary. *Nursery is available for children 4 years old and under. SIGN UP NOW! Church Beach Retreat Thursday, August 23, or Friday, August 24, through Sunday, August 26. Calvary United Methodist Church is hosting a retreat weekend at Bethany Beach this summer. Open to individuals, families and friends of the church. 4 or 7 meals are included depending on date of arrival. Beach, playground and other amenities are available throughout the weekend. Come play in the sun, relax and be refreshed! 5
