1 The Trumpet August, 2016 Trinity Lutheran Church, ELCA 235 East 7 th Street, Blue Earth, MN The mission of Trinity Lutheran Church, as God s chosen and baptized people, nurtured by word and sacrament, is to live for others boldly sharing the good news of Christ; using all the gifts we have been given. Worship will be led by Guest Pastor Jackie Ziemer from Mankato. Sunday, August 21 Pastor Jeanette Bidne Worship at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, August 28 Worship at 9:30 a.m. in the sanctuary. Wednesday evening worship will continue through the month of August. Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. To Interim Pastor Paul Meierding By the time you read this Trumpet, Pastor Paul will have completed his time with us. If you didn t get the time to personally thank him for his efforts, I hope you will pause to reflect on how helpful his presence for us has been. His wisdom and experience have made us a strong congregation today. I don t have the space to list all of his contributions, but in short, he changed the way we think about our mission as Christians and how we carry out those duties. His emphasis on looking beyond Trinity s walls, to helping the hungry, to being more hospitable and to constantly challenge ourselves to do more are just a few of the ways he enriched us. We thank God for Pastor Paul and the gifts he shared with us. Steve Frederickson Council President Property Committee recommended and Council has approved letting bid to Erosion Control Plus (Jonathan Weerts) of Winnebago for a parking lot in the area between Trinity and the Wells Fargo Bank. Work should begin the week of July 25 and will take approximately a month to complete. The new lot will include one handicap stall. Oneway entrance will be from 7 th St with parking for 23 vehicles. Estimated cost of the project, plus survey work, is $59,612. There is $23,958 in Savings designated for the Parking Lot project, plus $18,500 from Bernice Anderson s estate for a total of $42,458 currently designated for this project. Donations for the parking lot construction can be placed in the offering plate or dropped off at the church office. Write parking lot in the memo area of your check. God s Work. Our Hands. Sunday September 11 (which also happens to be the 15 year anniversary of 9-11). It is a day of service in which nearly 10,000 congregations of the ELCA take seriously Christ s call to action to serve our neighbors and share God s love. The planning committee includes Jim Beattie, Sue Olson and Steve Frederickson. Trinity members can be involved in assembling or packing military care packages, college student care packages, birthday bags, school kits, etc. We will be asking members to write notes for the packages above and/or thanks you cards for local first responders. Help will be needed to prepare and serve a pork meal for a Block Party at the Trinity Stand. If you have questions about these projects or have an idea for a project to be done, please contact Kim Jacobson Directory of Children/Youth and Family Ministries

2 Information from Your Church Council MOMENTUM >>>PARTICIPATION I d like to begin this article with an expression of gratitude to our Anniversary Committee. The members of this group have planned and supervised the events that have helped make this year a memorable one already. We have enjoyed reading of Trinity s 125 year history. The return of some of our former pastors to lead our worship has enriched us and reminded us of how fortunate we have been to have these people serve us. Most recently, the Hi Choir reunion was a magical service that we will remember for many years to come. So again, thank you to the Anniversary Committee for your efforts and we look forward to what is to come. With these special events one can sense a growing momentum at Trinity and a positive outlook for the future. Each special Sunday fills us with a little more pride for where we have been and who we are today. However, if we want to build on this momentum, it is essential that we focus on increased participation from members of our congregation. Looking back has been fun and rewarding, but looking forward is even more important. In order to continue Trinity s legacy, we must all consider what we can do and participation is the key. Membership, attendance and giving are all needed, but for growth we must focus on participating in the life of the church. The arrival of Pastor Bidne will provide us with another momentum boost. We look forward to getting to know her and seeing how her gifts will be utilized at Trinity. However as Pastor Paul has stressed, we are all a part of ministry, not just the ones who wear the collar. Please take some time to think about how you might increase your participation volunteer work, teaching, reading lessons, singing, serving on committees, sharing your talents and resources whatever you can do will enrich the life of Trinity and help to ensure a future that is as rewarding as our past. Highlights from July 12 Council Minutes Discussion on Chapter 12 in 12 Keys to an Effective Church: Generous Giving. We have been approved to participate in Stewardship for All Seasons (SAS) co-sponsored through the SE MN Synod. Approved to borrow against line of credit to pay oldest bills. Checking account balance on June 30 th was $ Pastor Jeanette Bidne has verbally accepted our pastoral call. She will lead worship beginning August 21. Her Installation will be Sept 25. Property Committee recommended to accept bid from Erosion Control Plus for parking lot project. Committee has been meeting to define projects for God s Work. Our Hands. on Sept 11 th. Will include a Block Party meal at the Fairgrounds with invitation to be sent to local First Responders. Pastor Paul reviewed clerical typos and very minor wording changes to our present Constitution. Council approved to correct these changes and approve the Constitution. Guest Pastors between Pastor Paul s last Sunday (July 31) and the arrival of Pastor Jeanette Bidne will be: Pr Steve Kidder on Aug 7 and Pr Jackie Ziemer on Aug 14 th. Complete copy of the minutes are available on the display near the office door. Sunday August 21 Welcome and Reception for Pr. Jeanette Bidne Sunday, August 21, is a new and exciting day for Trinity. Join us at 9:30 worship to greet Pastor Jeanette Bidne. The Call Committee invites you to stay for coffee following the service. We hope to see all of you on this special day! 3 ====c~êéïéää>= Dear members of Trinity, I began serving as your interim pastor on Sunday, February 1, My last day is Sunday, July 31, I have served exactly a year and a half. I appreciate the strong lay leadership at Trinity, especially the Church Presidents: Linda Adams (2014), Clair Nassen (2015), Steve Frederickson (2016), and Renee Beattie (who will serve in 2017). Thanks also to all church council members and committee members for their faithful service! I appreciate the work of our Transition Task Force and Call Committee (whom I thanked by name in the July 2016 Trumpet). Thanks also to our faithful and dedicated staff: Donna Perryman (Office Manager), Kim Jacobson (Children, Youth, and Family Coordinator), and Kevin Skaare (Custodian). I am tempted to claim some credit for things that we have accomplished during these past 18 months. But then I read Paul s words in 1 Corinthians 3:6-9. I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. The one who plants and the one who waters have a common purpose... For we are God s servants, working together... We need to remember that any growth or any success comes from God alone. There is no reason for any one person to try to take credit. May God bless you as you begin another chapter in Trinity s history, with Pastor Jeanette Bidne leading you forward! I will continue to follow with interest how God is working in your midst! - Pastor Paul Meierding Lutheran World Relief At this time of the year, school supplies start going on sale. Last year we collected enough items to fill 38 school bags; the year before we filled 50! Imagine having to choose between a meal or purchasing a notebook. LWR School Kits are sent to places where even the few required supplies may be more than a family can afford. School may be free but the supplies are not furnished. Pencils and paper can help write a positive future. Items for one kit include: sheet notebooks of wideor college-ruled paper (no looseleaf paper) centimeter ruler or a ruler with centimeters on one side and inches on the other 1 pencil sharpener 1 blunt scissors (safety scissors with steel blades works well 1 box of 16 or 24 crayons /2" eraser We have enough pens and pencils at this time. Please give new items only. Please do not give items with religious symbols or your group's name. Please do not donate items with a U.S. flag, patriotic or military symbols, or references to the armed forces, including camouflage. The school bags will be sewn by TLCW volunteers. The drawstrings will be added as a September 11 God's Work Our Hands project. If time allows, we will also pack the bags that day. Thank you for being part of God's Work. The article starts, German. Norwegian. Danish. Swedish. In the early and mid-1800 s you didn t need to speak English to remain abreast with the happenings of the Lutheran church. The Lutheran Observer, which began publishing in 1831, was one of the first forms of Lutheran news in the U.S. The Lutheran Church has seen many changes over the years: On April 24, 1960, Trinity is among hundreds of church bodies celebrating the formation of the American Lutheran Church (ALC) in Minneapolis. On January 1, 1988, Trinity s 1165 members are among the 5,349,962 members of the newly-formed Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). Trinity is one of the 11,022 congregations. Trinity is now part of the Blue Earth River Conference of the Southeastern Synod, with Glen Nyklemoe as Bishop. Throughout its history, The Lutheran (magazine) served as a way not only to communicate news about the church, but also to share what the church was doing across the country and around the world. In its prime publication years, The Lutheran magazine was mailed to every Lutheran household. In 1995, the ELCA church magazine was one of the first to go online. The new Living Lutheran, now has a digital presence. With a new name and enhanced website, Living Lutheran will continue to be a consistent voice both in print and online. 5 August Youth News Children/Youth and Family Kimberly Jacobson, Children/Youth & Family Ministries is I remember as a child hearing time sure flies and thinking really? It felt to me as if it just dragged on and on. But the older I get I realize how true that really is, especially in the summer. I don t think I ve ever heard anyone say winter is just flying by. When we live in the Midwest I think we have to pack so much fun into our summer, time really does seem to fly by. I have had a very busy summer with children and youth ministry. In June I took 45 youth and adults to Whitewater State Park to Be still and know that He is God, It was a fantastic week of being refreshed. The 2nd week in July, day campers learn what it means to be released into the world to serve. They along with the camp staff from Ingham Okoboji put on a worship service for families to share the scriptures and songs they had been learning. It was wonderful! The following week was the Faribault County fair. I had the opportunity to serve alongside of dozens of our children, youth and families in our fair stand. I have always loved that inter-generational service opportunity but I could have done without the humidity. And in the blink of an eye it s already August and I just want to slow things down!! It seems as though school just got out and I am getting ready to welcome kids back again! At the end of last year I did a short survey of our current Sunday school teachers and found that they were interested in having me look at some new curriculum. I've been doing a lot of research as well as talking to some other children/youth and family ministers to get ideas on what works for their churches. I got a lot of really positive feedback about lectionary based lessons. I am excited to say that after looking at the sample lessons I placed an order with Augsburg. Now the kids will have the opportunity to be learning the same lessons that are in church that day, which should help solidify their knowledge of the scriptures and stories. This particular curriculum is also on a 3 year rotation so there should be no repeats. We will be doing something similar on Wednesday afternoon as well and including a video and crafts that go along with the lesson. If all this sounds exciting to you and you would love to be a part of the team to teach.. do I have a deal for you!! I am currently in need of a teacher for 1st, 2nd, and 4th grades. (I have one teacher confirmed for 1st grade but she would like to team teach, so the commitment would be every other week) That model would work in either of the other two grades as well. Please let me know ASAP if this is something you feel led to do. I appreciate your prayerful consideration for these opportunities to teach. Thank you! Kim Jacobson Proverbs 22:6 Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.
