That day the Rev. Dr. Christopher Heckaman will begin his ministry as Senior Pastor. I hope you will plan now to mark this milepost on your calendar so you and your family are present to meet Chris and Lisa on their first day at Trinity. You will quickly come to love and respect them as persons have in each of the churches where Chris has pastored. Chris and Lisa are the parents of three grown children, two daughters and a son, and have a grandchild. Chris grew up in the Presbyterian denomination before his parents moved to Grace UMC due to its outstanding youth program. He was a student pastor at a local United Church of Christ before being appointed to United Methodist Churches. In 1994 he became associate minister at Shawnee UMC, which was the largest congregation in the Lima District. In 1999 he was appointed Senior Pastor at First UMC in Sidney, Ohio, where he revitalized a congregation from a 30 year low of 12% weekly attendance to 70% weekly attendance out of 1,000 official members. Recognizing his leadership abilities, Bishop Ough appointed Chris as District Superintendent of the Miami Valley District, which covers several counties in the Dayton area. And now as his service there is concluding, Bishop Gregory Palmer is sending Dr. Heckaman to serve as senior pastor at Trinity Church. Prof. Mark Baker Director of Music mbaker@capital.edu Dee Keller 9:00 Contemporary Music Leader cheridyk@hotmail.com Mindy Hayward 11:00 Contemporary Music Leader mhayward@trinityumchurch.com Church trinityoffice@trinityumchurch.com Church Website Online Worship I have known Chris for 24 years. We became acquainted when I was appointed by Bishop Ammons to serve Piqua Grace United Methodist Church where Chris had been attending several years since high school. He and his family had come to Grace Church due to the outstanding youth program there. It was a dynamic, busy, joyous, and growing congregation. Dr. Lee Strawhun, who was then the Youth Pastor at Grace Church, remembers Chris as always one of those people who attracts other people around him due to his warm and genuine personality. When Lee first arrived at the church, he said that during one high school basketball halftime, Chris and his sister introduced me to a hundred of their friends. In high school Chris played in the marching band and excelled academically. He attended Bowling Green State University graduating magna cum laud, then received his three year theological education at United Theological Seminary in Dayton. A few years later, Chris continued his studies by obtaining the Doctor of Ministry degree from Asbury Theological Seminary as a Beeson Scholar, the same program in which Dr. Brian Jones earned his doctorate. My wife followed Chris on the staff at Shawnee UMC when I became the Lima District Superintendent in So our paths have crossed often during the past 24 years. Chris is very accessible, friendly, smart, cultured, with great spiritual depth and sensitivity. Trinity Church is greatly blessed to have Chris coming to join the outstanding staff already here. He has been meeting regularly with his future colleagues to chart a course for the months and years ahead. Our superb Staff Parish Relation Committee has been helping Chris and Lisa in planning for their arrival. If you would like to write a letter of welcome and introduce yourself and family, please phone or Judy West at the church office and she can give you their address. I am confident that Trinity Church will be led competently and well for many years to come. As I have said before, but it bears repeating, The best is yet to be! Please put a big circle around June 29 and be here to welcome Dr. Chris and Lisa Heckaman to Trinity Church. -Rev. Philip Brooks Trinity United Methodist Church 1581 Cambridge Boulevard Columbus, OH (614)
E adult education Parents of Young Children (Ongoing Group) April 27 - June 1 (Room 207) The Parents of Young Children class helps bring order to problematic family circumstances and guide even the most stable families into better ways of relating, taking us through the ins and outs of instilling character in our children the kind that will help them to one day lead balanced, productive and fulfilling adult lives. Our next study will be PARENTING: THE EARLY YEARS by Drs. Les and Leslie Parrot. "Who you are matters more than what you do. When your kids are all grown up, how will they remember you? In these six sessions, Drs. Les and Leslie Parrott will take you through a parenting approach you won't find in any other parenting resource. Together, we'll take a sneak peek at real-life parenting moments and vulnerable questions from 20 families, and will study 10 Biblical traits that will make you a better person and a better parent! Family Connection (Ongoing Group) May 10 - June 8 (Room 208) The Family Connection class explores a variety of topics related to living in a family relationship. Beginning May 10, we'll be studying Sticky Faith, by Dr. Kara Powell. "Most parents would give anything to anchor their children with a vibrant faith that sticks and continues to mature into adulthood. Yet, despite this deep desire, research indicates that approximately 40-50% of high school seniors drift from their faith after graduation. The Sticky Faith Parent Curriculum is a video-based study that came from Kara Powell's desire to see her own kids emerge from adolescence with their faith intact. Through personal, real-world experiences of research and sharing, the Sticky Faith Parent Curriculum enables parents to instill a deep and lasting faith in their adolescents. This video curriculum presents powerful strategies and practical ideas to help parents encourage their children's spiritual growth, enabling them to develop a faith that sticks." Exploring Blue Like Jazz (Rev. Katy Wheat) Mar 2 May 25 (Room 209) is a study about how to do life and faith well. Using the topics, themes, and questions addressed in Blue Like Jazz as a means of starting the conversation, Donald Miller offers an extremely frank look at questions of faith, interpersonal relationships, addiction and abuse, and other topics we all face when moving about in our work, our education, and our families. When Christians Get it Wrong (Bob and Carla Chiles) Apr 13, Apr 27, May 4 25 (Chapel) More and more young adults have opted out of Christianity and the church. The reason? Christians. When young adults talk about the problems they have with Christianity and the Church, they often name certain attitudes and behaviors they believe are practiced too often by Christians: judging others, condemning people of other faiths, rejecting science, injecting politics into faith, and being anti-homosexual. With his familiar style, Adam Hamilton tackles these issues and addresses the hows and whys of Christians getting it right when it comes to being Christ in the world. In His Word (Ongoing Group) Led by Matt Hamilton and Ken Thien (Room 215) God s very essence is love. His desire is for a relationship in which we enjoy Him and He us forever. This relationship begins in the here and now. We meet together weekly to explore our relationship with God and to experience the joy of knowing Him by lingering over His Word together. is an ongoing Adult Bible Fellowship for all ages. We meet most Sundays year-round. Drop in anytime, and come and go as you please. You ll be welcome. You won t be behind.
IHN F Unrestricted Funds As we have learned in past articles in Trinity Times, the Trinity Foundation has Permanent Endowment Funds and Memorial and Honor Funds. There is a third Fund within the Foundation and that is the Unrestricted Fund. The Unrestricted Fund is made up of all money given to the Foundation that is not designated to any other fund. These funds are free from any external restrictions and are available for general use within the sound discretion of the Trinity Foundation Board and in following its mission and bylaws. Much like we as individuals or families have a monthly or annual household budget where we have a plan to pay our known bills and expenses with the salary or wages that we earn, Trinity also has a budget. The church is able to plan for and pay its known and expected bills and employee salaries and wages with the annual pledges and tithes it receives. But what about unanticipated expenses or opportunities? In our personal life, when our furnace or car unexpectedly needs to be repaired or replaced or we are faced with a medical emergency, or we have a chance to go on a trip, we need to tap into our savings accounts or other personal reserves, borrow money or just go without. What does the church do in these situations? Where can we find the money for fixing or replacing our church spire or funding new opportunities like our Web ministry which streams our church services live to anyone in the world? The Trinity Foundation Unrestricted Fund is one possible source for this money. However, as of the writing of this article, there is a zero Wedding balance this pictures fund. Donors to our Foundation have so far chosen to designate the purpose for which their money can be requested spent such as for youth, education, mission, or music or have set up an endowment fund which allows for a very limited amount of money that can be spent each year (a percentage for of Trinity's the investment earnings on the principal so that the principal is always intact). These are very worthy designations. Corridor And it Gallery is fairly easy for the Foundation to budget scholarships and other grants from these limited funds. Contributing to and helping the church build an Unrestricted Fund is a worthy consideration as well so that we can be prepared for the more costly unexpected expenses as well as the big projects and that are not otherwise budgeted for. If you are interested in contributing to the Unrestricted Fund, it is as easy as writing a check to Trinity UMC and writing Unrestricted Foundation Fund in the memo line. Trinity Church once again welcomed our homeless neighbors to stay through the Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN), a group of houses of worship which temporarily house homeless families. From April 7-14, we hosted 15 individuals, and we re gearing up to do it again May 5-12! Once again, thank you for the financial support; the donations of blankets, pillows, toiletries, and meals; and the gift of time that many have given to stay overnight with families and to transport them from the Family Center to Trinity Church. We are in great need of help transporting families to and from the Family Center. We are also in need of individuals to stay overnight with the families at Trinity Church. To learn more about how you can help, please contact Beth and Nathan Wymer at npbawymer@aol.com. -Carrie Glaeden, Foundation Board Member *Special thanks to Jodi Kennedy for designing the new Foundation logo

I youth/children Dear friends at Trinity UMC, There are no words to describe what you have meant to my family over the past five years. You have loved us, you have taught us, you have encouraged us, and you have treated us like family. The decision to move back to North Carolina was a very difficult one. We are excited about being close to family and believe God has led us in this decision but we will miss you terribly! We have come to love Columbus and will visit on a regular basis! From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for being an amazing church family. We love you very much! -Brian Edwards & Family The youth ministry will continue in mighty ways until a new staff person is in place. May will be a fantastic month for the youth ministry! Check out these amazing opportunities: May 4 - Regular Youth Group 7:00-8:33 May 11 - No Meeting Mother s Day May 18 - Confirmation Sunday: 10:00 breakfast for families and 11:00 service in the sanctuary, End of Year Youth Group Celebration Cookout at the Richter s (1818 Bedford Rd. ) May 25 - Senior Sunday High School Seniors will be recognized at the 11:00 Crossroads service Congratulations UAHS Men s Basketball Team! 2014 State Runner-Ups 2014 Vacation Bible School Year after year, we are inspired and energized by the hundreds of children who spend the week at our church learning about God through our Vacation Bible School. From June 23-27, we will spend time embracing our differences and enjoying God s creations through the program Weird Animals. This is open to both Trinity and Non-Trinity members, ages 4 yrs. (by 9/30) through 5th grade. This past winter, many of us found excitement in the March Madness happening right here in own our backyard. The Upper Arlington Men s Basketball Team went on an incredible state title run beating both the #1 and #2 seeded teams to advance to the state championship game for the first time in 75 years. And although St. Edwards defeated the Golden Bears in overtime, the entire team played with great talent, poise, and grace. Three of our youth, Logan Richter (Sr.), Harrison Heath (Sr.), and Austin Heath (Jr.), were among those who played a pivotal role in the success of the team. The young men have been playing basketball together since the third grade and are the closest of friends. Both Logan & Harrison are in the final stages of choosing where they will attend college in the fall, while Austin looks forward to continuing the momentum with next year s team. A very BIG congratulations for an exceptional and memorable 2014 season. You made us all proud! We are also in need of both adult and youth VBS assistants. It s a wonderful opportunity to help shape the faith journey of a child. Registration and volunteer forms can be found in the church atrium and on our main website. The cost is $25 per child before May 11, 2014 and $30 per child between May 12 and our deadline of June 16, Please contact Amy Giles ( ) or Karen Brantley ( ) with any questions. Austin Heath (left), Harrison Heath (center) are both sons of Mark & Leslie Heath, and Logan Richter (right) is son of Phil & Laura Richter. Page 6 TRINITYg Åxá Volume 31 Number 5 May 2014
mission J Fourteen years ago, the Columbus Coalition for the Homeless hosted a brunch in a church basement to celebrate Mother s Day for about 30 homeless mothers and their families. Fourteen years later, this same luncheon has become an annual event hosted at Capital University for approximately 200 mothers and family members totaling close to 450 attendees. In addition to enjoying a delicious brunch, the ladies are treated to music and beautiful corsages, and professional family photos are taken as a keepsake of the day! Trinity has been a long-time sponsor of this event, and we need your help to make this an inspirational and heartwarming day for these mothers: On Friday, May 9th at 1pm, we will meet at Trinity UMC to make over 200 corsages for the mothers. On Saturday, May 10th at 2pm, we will be setting up for the event at Capital University. On Sunday, May 11th at 10am, we need greeters and servers to host the event. If you would like to volunteer for any of these activities, please contact volunteer coordinator Meghan Peters at meghanepeters11@gmail.com or You can also be a sponsor for this event. It costs $25 for each mother to attend. If you would like to sponsor a homeless mother or contribute to this event, please write a check payable to Trinity UMC, with CCH on the memo line. God calls us to serve Him by serving others. Join us to make this a special Mother s Day! In His Own Time A Personal Testimony by Scott Tipton My name is Scott Tipton, and I have been a lifelong member of Trinity United Methodist Church. Many of you know me as Phyllis s son or an usher for the Traditional service; however, over the last 10 years my connection, and my desire to be a member of this church, faded to the point of non-attendance. Between work responsibilities, personal life, and being the primary caretaker for my ill parents, I rationalized that God & the church could be set aside. I returned to Trinity shortly after my mother passed last year, but I still found myself lacking that feeling of connection. During this time I questioned my purpose in life, where I wanted to worship on a weekly basis, and even my faith. One August Sunday morning, I was at the Trinity Welcome Center and noticed a call to serve on the leadership team for a new mission called Great Day of Service. I recalled one of Rev. Katy Wheat s sermons about not always knowing what to do, but letting the Spirit guide me. So I signed up and I am glad that I did. I have truly enjoyed being in fellowship and meeting new friends while planning to be the eyes, hands and feet of Jesus Christ. But God wasn t done with me yet. The friends I met through missions encouraged me to better acquaint myself with the Trinity ministers by watching our online services. So I did that and very much enjoyed that too. The online services allowed me the opportunity, without interruption or distraction, to focus on the message and how it applied to my life. Shortly after I became an online attendee, I was invited to join Trinity s online Advent study. Through this study, I was able to connect, share, meet new friends in Christ, and gain greater insight to the Advent story. The pinnacle of my faith journey occurred when I chose to join an online study focused on Andy Stanley s series Time of Your Life. The time I spent completing this study and being in fellowship with others, created a desire within me to grow deeper in God - to not just show up to church and go through the motions, but to be in authentic relationship with Christ. This relationship is based on openness, honesty, and a significant commitment of my time to serve the Lord. The concluding session focused on God s great gift of placing eternity in each of hearts (Ecclesiastes 3:11). It made me reflect on the many individuals who have been sent by God to push me forward in my faith journey so that I might give up my old ways and carry His cross. God worked through this great family at Trinity to help pull me out of the darkness that had become my life. And I am forever changed as a result. Through my experiences with missions, the web ministry, and an effort to heal through our grief support group, I am determined to go about each day knowing it is a blessing from God. Whenever I find myself frustrated that I have wasted so many years not being in relationship with God, I am reminded that God has a purpose for each and every one of us, we need only to listen and respond. My friends, there are better days ahead...this I now know for sure. Page 7 TRINITYg Åxá Volume 31 Number 5 May 2014
